Application led November 20, 1929.
This invention relates to a toy.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a toy embodying novel features to the end that the toy will be of dual character, whereby a youngster may be amused in different ways while playing with the toy.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy embodying the features of the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective View of the bellows structure of the toy, portions thereof being broken away;
Figure 3 is a section taken the line 3 3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a detail section taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
The present invention generally stated contemplates a combined play block or closely analogous plaything, and a sound producing device designed and adapted to be operated by pressure applied to a part of the play block or plaything.
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawing, it will be apparent that the device includes three main parts 10, 11 and 12. The part 10 is made of suitable material such as cardboard and is of hollow and cubical form open at opposite ends. The part 11 is also made of suitable material such as cardboard, is of hollow construction open at The part 11 is reduced to present a shoulder 14. The part 12 is made of suitable material such as cardboard, and is of hollow construction to tit over the reduced portion of the part 11, so as to have guided movement with respect to the part 11. Use is made of a piece of flexible adhesive material 15 which constitutes a means for connecting the parts 11 and 12 together for relative movement, and also to limit the movement of the part 12 in one direction against the action of an expansion spring 16 interposing the wall 13 of the part 11, and a wall 17 of the part 12. The spring 16 constantly acts to hold the part 12 in a position in which an air chamber 18 will be substantially on Serial No. 408,518.
defined by the walls 13 and 17, together with the remaining walls of the part 12. The material 15 is secured around the parts 11 and 12 and forms an air seal to prevent air from escaping between the parts 11 and 12. The material 15 as stated limits the movement of the part 12 in one direction, that is to say, the movement imparted to the part 12 by `the spring 16, and the shoulder 14 limits the movement of the part 12 and the part 11 in 60 the opposite direction. The parts 11 and 12 when connected together in the manner described fit within the part 10 and form therewith a play block of eubical form. The part 10 is secured in any suitable manner such as 5 by the use of glue to the part 11, the glue being indicated at 19.
In accordancewith another feature of the invention use is made of any suitable form of air operated, sound producing device, such 70 device being designated 20. The device 20 is attached to the wall 17 of the part 12 on the inside thereof so as to be disposed within the air chamber 18. The device 20 includes an air tube 21 having a reed 22. The device D 2O also includes a sound box 23 which carries the tube 21. The box 23 is attached in an airtight manner to the wall 17, the latter having an air hole 24 therein with which the interior of the box 23 communicates. It will 80 also be apparent that one end of the tube 21 communicates with the interior of the air chamber 18 and the opposite end thereof is disposed within the box 23 allowing air to be forced from the air cham-ber 18 through 85 the tube 21 to vibrate the reed 22, the air escaping through the box 23 and the hole 24.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the parts 11 and 12 connected together 9G with the flexible material 15, together with the spring 16 constitute a bellows having an outer member in the form of the wall 17 which may be manipulated to operate the device 20. By exerting pressure on the wall 95 17 air within the air chamber' 18 will be excluded therefrom causing the reed 22 to vibrate to produce a musical sound, and, when pressure on the wall 17 is withdrawn, Y an- Wiu be drawn in through the i101@ 24 again eausingthe reed 22 to vibrate, producing a musical sound.
It is to -be understood that the outer faces of the part l0 and also the outer face of the Wall 17 may be covered With suitable material such as paper having pictorial or other representations, symbols, numbers or letters 'of the alphabet thereon. It will also be apparent that by making the part ll hollow and open at one end blocks of diderent sizes may be nested Within each other.
claim:
l. A toy comprising the combination of a play block, and pneumatic sound producing means incorporated in said block and adapted to be operated by applying pressure on a part ot the block, said block being hollow and open at one side so that the block may be nested With others.
2. In a toy, a. bellows comprising three principal parts of hollouv construction, two of said parts being itted to each other so that one part Will hare guided movement on the other part and forming therewith an air chamber, a flexible strip connecting said two parts together and constituting an air seal and also means limiting the relative separating movement of the movable part, and the third part being secured and arranged exteriorly of said two parts and being open at one end so that pressure may be applied on the movable part.
Signed at New York, in the county of New Yorl: and State of New York, this 18th day of November`r 1929.
