SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,511, dated May 20, 1890.

T or whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of 5 New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ear-Muffs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to car-muffs; and it consists in certain new features, which are described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an inside view of an ear-muff constructed according to my invention. 2 is a section taken on the line m w of Fig. 1,

In carrying out my invention I construct a hollow frame or ring A, of metal or other suitable material, of a length and breadth suffi- :c cient to go around the ear. The frame may be made of wire or sheet metal, the ends of the wire or material constituting the ring or frame being united by a rivet at B, where the ring or frame is flattened for a little distance 2 5 to allow the attachment thereto of the arms of the clasp.

W'ithin the ring or frame A is arranged a clasp consisting of two semicircular or bent arms C 0, whose ends meet within the frame 0 A, their concave sides being placed toward each other. The outer ends of the arms 0 project beyond the frame A, to which they are pivoted at D D in such a manner that they can be turned on said pivots. The projecting ends of the arms 0 O are so made as to form finger-pieces E E, by making pressure on which and moving them toward each other the inner curved ends of the arms 0 C will be moved apart, as is illustrated in Fig. 1.

The frame A is covered on one side with 40 velvet or other suitable fabric E, which is made also to envelop and conceal the frame, and the curved arms O C arelikewise covered with the same or similar material.

The arms 0 O are drawn toward each other 4 and kept closed by means of a band of indiarubber H, which is placed around the necks G G of the arms 0, as shown in the drawings.

In using the muff the arms 0 C are opened by pressing their finger-pieces E E toward each other when the arms 0 are placed upon the ear behind the helix and lobe, so that the helix and lobe and the parts of the organ which stand out from the head come between the arms (J C and the outer rim of the muff, where those parts are covered by the fabric F.-

VVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In an ear-muff, the combination, with the frame to pass around the ear, of a pair of arms pivotally attached to thesaid frame and projecting into the latter to embrace the ear behind the helix and lobe, and a spring which presses the arms toward each other, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the frame of an ear-muff, of a pair of arms pivoted to the frame, extending into the frame and having outwardly-extending finger-pieces, and a spring which presses the arms toward each other, substantially as described.
