, MUSICAL Toy Filed Nov. 25. 1949 v /I/Zf ATTORNEY Patented May 5, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MUSICAL TOY Daniele De Nisco, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application November 25, 1949, Serial No. 129,280
(Cl. l16--52) Z Claims.
The invention relates to production of a musical sound or note, or sevei'al of them, dependent upon the construction, shape or form and material of the baffle or resistance placed in the airchamber.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of the entire toy. Figure 2 is a plan View of Fig. 1 showing the hollow cylinder with the top of the pin near one end.
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 with a musical instrument or resistance placed in the said hollow cylinder.
Figure 4 is a transverse section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2 showing a round bar with a handle attached which bar passes through the cylinder.
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view showing the operation of the toy, and Fig. 6 is a view showing a reed to take the place of the musical instrument shown in Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the views.
The toy is held by the handle Ill and swung or turned on the bar II in such manner that the cylinder or air-chamber I2 revolves around the handle. Air then enters the cylinder IZ from the end i3 or orifice nearest the handle ID and passes 'through a resistance, or musical instrument I4, the air coming out through the other end or oriiice I5, which causes the production of sound or music similar to a musical wind instrument. A plane 28 is indicated in Fig. l. The circular directions of movement of the orifices I3 and I5 are shown by the circles Il and I8, respectively. The general line of the axis of the tube I2 is indicated by I9. Holes 9 are provided in the tube I2 for the bar I I. The tone or pitch may be varied in accordance with the design or construction of the resistance employed. See reed I5 variance in Figure 6. Any number of combinations may likewise be employed.
The sounds may be made multiple by joining together two or more cylindrical or rectangular or other shaped tubes and varying the type or kind of resistance employed in each tube or cylinder. In addition, with resistances as indicated, the cylinders may be placed upon the blades of several propellers and when the propellers are caused to rotate, the tubes without the use of the handle (Figure 3) will emit sound as heretofore stated.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
I claim:
l. In a musical toy, having an elongated hollow solid wall tube open only at both ends forming oriiices, and a Whistle disposed in said tube and arranged transversely of said tube, said whistle having a central opening coaxial with said tube and having a sound producing element, said whistle entirely covering the cross section of said tube, the combination of said tube, with an operating supporting handle connected with said tube to one end thereof, said handle including a pivot pin pivotally attaching said handle to said end of said tube, and a hand grip portion connected to said pin for supporting said pin and aligned with said pivot pin, whereby when said tube is moved around said pivot in a plane freely in the atmosphere the orices move in circular directions in said plane about said pivot as the common center of curvature, the orifice more distant from said pivot moving faster than the orice nearer to said pivot, and the air within said tube moving axially out of said distant orice of said tube, drawing air through said tube to sound said whistle.
2. In a musical toy, having an elongated hollow solid wall tube open only at both ends forming' oriees, and a whistle disposed in said tube and arranged transversely of said tube, said whistle having a central opening coaxial with said tube and having a sound producing element, said whistle entirely covering the cross section of said tube, the combination with said tube, of an operating supporting member connected with one end of said tube including pivot means around which the tube is movable in a plane with the orifice nearest said end travelling with a radius or curvature from said pivot less than the radius ott curvature of said other distant orifice, said pivot means being substantially aligned with said tube, whereby when said tube is moved around said pivot in a plane freely in the atmosphere the orifices move in circular directions in said plane about said pivot as the common center of curvature, the oriiice more distant from said pivot moving faster than the oriiice nearer to said pivot, and the air within said tube moving axially out of said distant orifice of said tube, drawing air through said tube to sound said whistle.
