i To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL Kors, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Brassieres, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a brassiere, and to the general type of garment shown and described in Letters Patent No. 1,233,250,

July 10, 1917; No. 1,237,059, August 14:,

1917; and No. 1,253,052, January 8, 1918. In the garments shown and described in all of these patents, the object was to so construct the brassiere, by making it adjustable along the axillary lines, that it was made to fit as it was adjusted to position on the body of the wearer. In the present case, I have the same general objects in View, and to this end, the garment is also made adjustable along the axillary lines thereof, but in addition to these features, the present invention relates more particularly to the construction of the back of the garment so that the tension applied by the adjustable devices creates a circumferential adjustment between the front and back members, and a longitudinal adjustment in the front members, causing the back members to act as a shoulder brace, and the front members as bust supporters; In the use of this garment therefore, the same not only acts as a brassiere, but also performs the function of a bust supporter and a shoulder brace, so that at the same time it adequately covers the upper edge of a corset garment, when one is worn, acts as a proper support for the busts, and also as a shoulder brace to give a square shoulder military carriage to the wearer of the garment, and consequently may be used as an extension of a low top corset.

The brassiere made in accordance with this invention will be hereinafter more particularly described.

front members 10 and 11 which may be so shaped as to properly act as bust supporters, and back members 12 and 13, which are preferably two in number, are made to overlap each other while each extends from the entire axillary line on one side of the garment to a portion of the axillary line at the other side of the garment, so that in the adjustment of the garment to position, these back members or straps act as a brace to keep the shoulders of the wearer in the desired position.

The front member 10 at the forward edge thereof, is provided with a reinforcing strip 14, to and in which there may be secured a series of hooks 15, and the inner edge of the front member 11 is similarly provided with a reinforcing strip 17 secured to or in whichis a corresponding series of eyes 18 adapted to be engaged by the hooks 15 so that the front members 10 and 11 may be connected to one another along the front medial line of the garment;

At the axillary line, the front member 10 is provided with a reinforcing strip 18 in which there is a series of eyelets 19. One end of the back member 12 is also provided with a reinforcing strip 20 adapted to lie adjacent the reinforcingstrip 18 and in which there is a corresponding number of eyelets 21. Laces 22 are threaded through the eyelets 21 and also through the eyelets 19 so as to be secured or anchored at corresponding ends in the reinforcing strip 18. The other ends of these laces are secured to a tape 23 by any suitable connection indicated at 24. The tape 23 extends to the forward central portion of the member 10 where it is passed through a tape hole 25 in the front member 10, and reinforcing tab 26 secured thereto.

Similarly at the axillary line of the front member 11 there is a reinforcing strip 27 in which there is a series of eyelets 28. One end of the-back member 13 is provided with a reinforcing strip 29 adapted to lie adjacent the reinforcing strip 27 andin which there is a series of eyelets 30. Laces 31 are threaded through the eyelets 30 and also through the eyelets 28 so that at corresponding ends they are substantially fixed in the reinforcing strip 27. At their opposite ends these laces 31 are brought together and secured to a tape 32 by any suitable connection as illustrated at 33. The tape 32 is carried to the lower central portion of the front trated in the Letters Patent to which reference has hereinbefore been made, and as will be understood, in placing the garment on the body of the wearer, the tapes 23 and 32 are drawn together and tied at the outer front portion of the garment.

As hereinbefore stated, the invention in the present case relates more particularly to the construction of the back members. By reference to the drawing, it will be seen that the back number 12 along one edge thereof, has secured thereto the reinforcing strip 20 which is of substantially the same length as the reinforcing strip 18 and extends along the entire axillary line of the garment. The reinforcing strip 20 is secured to this edge of the back member 12 along the lines of stitching indicated at 36. Similarly one edge of the back member 13 has secured thereto the reinforcing strip 29, the parts being connected along the lines of stitching 37 and this edge of the back member 13-extends along the entire axillary line of the garment. The back members 12 and 13 are preferably tapered, and the back member 12 extends from the reinforcing strip 20 at the left axillary line to the reinforcing strip 29 at the right axillary line, where the reduced end of this back member 12 i secured to this reinforcing strip 29 and to the back member 13 by the same lines of stitching which secure the reinforcing strip 29 to the back member 13. The reduced or narrow end of the back member 12 lies between the points 41 and 42 of the lines of stitching 37. The same construction is maintained with regard to the back member 13. This extends from the reinforcing strip 29 at the right axillary line of the garment to its narrow or reduced end at the left axillary line, where the reduced or narrow end of the back member 13 is secured to the reinforcing strip 20 by the same lines of stitching 36 that connect it to the back member 12, the narrow end of the back member 13 extending between the points 43 and 44 of the line of stitching 36.

Also as indicated in the drawing, the back member 12 may be extended so as to form a shoulder strap 38 and the back member 13 so as to form a shoulder strap 39, and these shoulder straps may be suitably and adjustably secured, if desired, to the respective front members by suitable clasps 40 or otherwise. Inasmuch as the front members are adjusted to position through the shoulder straps, it is not necessary to connect the shoulder straps adjustably to the front members, and as shown in Fig. 3, the shoulder same together at the lower front central portion of the garment. In so doing, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 3, the reinforcing strips 18 and 20 will be drawn toward each other, as will also the reinforcing strips 27 and 29 In drawing the reinforcing strips 18 and 20 toward each other, a tension or pull will be exerted on the front member 10 in the direction of the arrow in line 42, Fig. 3, and a tension or pull will be exerted on the back member 12 in the direction of the arrow on the line 43. Similarly on the right hand side of the garment, as the reinforcing strips 27 and 29 are drawn toward each other, a tension or pull is exerted on the front member 11in the direction of the arrow in line 44, and a tension or pull on the back member 13 in the direction of the arrow in the dotted line 45. The tension thus exerted, creates a circumferential adjustment and 'a corresponding pressure on the body of the wearer. Also, as will be apparent, when the reinforcing strips 18 and 20 are drawn toward each other, a tension or pull will be exerted on the back member 13 in the direction of the arrow in line 46, which tension or pull is exerted also through the shoulder strap 39 and to the front member 11 in the direction of the arrow in line 47. In the same manner, when the reinforcing strips 27 and 29 on the right hand side of the garment are drawn together, a tension or pull will be exerted on the back member 12 in the direction of the arrow in line 48, and this is extended through the shoulder strap 38 to the front member 10, causing a pull in an upward or longitudinal direction, as indicated by the arrow in line 49, so that in this garment the front members are subject to adjustment in both a circumferential and a longitudinal direction.

As will be apparent from the foregoing description, portions of the back members 12 and 13 overlap each other and the construction is such that in the adjustment of the garment, the back members act as straps to draw the shoulders back and maintain the same in a desired position, while at the same time, the front members are adjusted to act as bust supporters.

I claim as my invention:

1. A. brassiere comprising a front member, back members, and means for adjusting the front and back members relatively to one another along the axillary lines of the garment with one end of each back member extending from adjacent one axillary line approximately to and terminating adjacent the other axillary line of the garment.

2. A brassiere comprising front members, overlapping back members, and means for adjustably connecting the front and back members along the axillary lines of the garment with one end of each back member lying adjacent to one axillary line and extending therefrom approximately to and terminating adjacent the other axillary line.

3. A brassiere comprising front members, back members, each of Which at one end extends along one entire axillary line of the garment and at the other end along only a portion of the upper part of the other axillary line of the garment, and devices for adjustably connecting the front and back members of the garment along the axillary lines thereof.

at. A brassiere comprising front members, reinforcing strips secured along the axillary lines of the front members, back members, a reinforcing strip secured along the axillary line of each back member and from which each back member tapers to a narrow opposite end which is secured to the reinforcing strip along the axillary line of the other back member and in the upper portion thereof, and means for adjustably connecting the front and back members along the axillary lines of the garment.

A brassiere comprising a front member, back members, and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension to the parts thereof at its axillary lines so that the tension applied at one axillary line to one end of one back member creates a circumferential adjustment in the parts of the garment, while the tension applied at the same axillary line to the opposite end of the other back members creates a longitudinal adjustment in the said front member.

6. A brassiere comprising a front member, back members, shoulder straps connecting the front and back members, and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension at the axillary lines thereof so that the tension applied at one axillary line to one end of one back member creates a circumferential tension in the garment while the tension applied at the same axillary line to the opposite end of the other back member creates a longitudinal tension in the front member through the shoulder strap connected to the said second back member.

'7. A brassiere comprising a front member, overlapping back members and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension to the parts thereof at the axillary lines, so that the tension applied to the corresponding ends of each back member creates a circumferential adjustment between the front and back members While the tension applied to the other corresponding ends of the back members creates a longitudinal adjustment in the front member.

8. A brassiere comprising a front member, overlapping back members, shoulder straps connecting the front and back members, and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension at the axillary lines thereof, so that the tension applied to one set of the corresponding ends of the back members creates a circumferential adjustment between the front and back members, while the tension applied to the opposite set of ends of the back members is exerted through the shoulder straps to create a longitudinal adjustment of the frpnt memher.

9. A brassicre comprising front members, overlapping back members, a shoulder strap connecting each back member with one of the front members, and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension to the parts thereof, at the axillary lines, so that the tension applied to the corresponding ends of each back member creates a circumferential adjustment in the front and back members, While the tension applied to the other corresponding ends of each back member is exerted through the shoulder strap connected therewith to the opposite front member to create a longitudinal adjustment therein.

1.0. A brassiere comprising front members, overlapping back members, each tapering and extending from its wider end at one axillary line to its narrower end at the other axillary line, a shoulder strap associated with the wider end of each back member and connected to the adjacent front member, and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension to the parts thereof at the axillary lines so that the tension applied at the wider end of each back member creates a circumferential adjustment between the front and back members, while the tension applied at the narrower end of each back member is exerted through the shoulder strap associated therewith to create a longitudinal adjustment in the opposite front member.

11. A brassiere comprising a front member, back members, and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension to the front and back members, so that the tension applied to corresponding parts of each back member creates a circumferential adjustment between the front and back members, while the tension applied to other corresponding parts of the back members creates a longitudinal adjustment in the front member.

12. A brassiere comprising front members, overlapping back members, a shoulder strap connectlng each back member With one of the front members, and devices adjustable at the front of the garment for applying tension to the front and back members, so that the tension applied to corresponding ends of each back member creates a circum ferential adjustment in the .front and back members, While the tension applied to the other corresponding ends of each back mem- 10 ber is eXerted through the shoulder strap connected therewith to the opposite front member to create a longitudinal adjustment j therein.
