Application filed November 6,1915. serial no. 59,915},
V stances, instead of a corset garment, women have accustomed themselves to wearing a' skirted belt or girdle. In the use of these garments due to their close fitting nature and the customary tension devices, such for example as hose supporters attached tothe lower edges of the same, there has resulted, in many cases, a preponderance of flesh over the stomach of the wearer, that is to say, lying between the. abdomen and the busts. At the present time the ever changing fashions have a tendency to cause a return demand for the usual corset garment having the regular bust sections as heretofore. In making this change in garments it has been found necessary to provide some means not only to support but to reduce this preponderance of flesh which, as hereinbefore stated has in many cases resulted from wearing an extremely low busted garment or a belt or girdle, and the object of my present invention is the provision of a corset to remedy this effect and also at the same time to properly support the busts.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to place stays in the bust gores of apparel corsets. Heretofore, however, so far as the same has come to my knowledge, stays so placed were merely employed for ordinary stiffening purposes. I 1
In the corset made in accordance with my present invention the stays in each bust gore or section extend from a point in the lower portion of the bust gore somewhat below the waist line and diverge upwardly preferably in correspondingly curved lines, so that the lower front portions of the bust gores and the stays therein lie over any preponderance of flesh there may be between the busts and the abdomen of the wearer. I also employ suitably attached hose supporters which extend downwardly from the front of the garment and when in use exert a downward tension. This causes the front of the garment to act as a lever of the first order with the preponderance of flesh as its fulcrum Specification of Letters eaten.

and. consequently the dqwnward pressure of the hose supporters tends to force the upper portions of the stays outwardly togive form to the bust gore. The reaction of the garment against the portion of the body in which there may be a preponderance of flesh consequently tendsto distribute and reduce the same and to force outwardly the upper portion of the stays to give form-to the bust gore and to provide a proper and suiii c lent support for the busts. lnthe corset made in accordance with my invention, I
have found it sometimes advisable to apply the downward and rearward tension di rectly from the lower portion of each bust section, and, as will be hereinafter described, in other instances, 1 may also employ a yielding tension strap secured to the corset body or the front.portion of the skirts thereof in which construction the forward or free edge ofthe yielding tension strap is provided with a hook or claspin orderto lend support to the abdomen" of the wearer and alsoto relieve the strain on'the lower front portion of the strap sections which in this construction are not connected by a hook or any other means. H
In the drawing; Figure 1,,is a front elevation of an apparel corset .macle in accord ance with this invention. Fig; 2, is an e'n= larged elevation of front portion of the corset body half as shown in Fig.1. Fig. 3; is an enlarged cross section on the line Fig. 2. Fig. 4;, is an enlarged cross section showing a modified form of the invention. Fig. 5, is also an enlarged cross section showing a still further form of the invenmere:-
tion. Fig. 6, is a front elevation of the corset embodying-another form o'f my invention. Fig.7, is an elevation of the inner side of the same. Fig. 8, is an elevation showing the inside of still another form of my invention. 'Fig. 9, is a similar view showing another modification, and Fig". 10, is a crosssection on .li'ne.l O'-l0, Fig, 8.
As will be seen by reference to Figs. to 5 of the drawing, the apparel corset made in accordance with my present invention, corn; prises as usual the corset'body halves 10 and 11 provided along" their front edges with steels 12 and clasps 13,'and along their rear edges with eyelets 14: through which the usual laces 15 are passed to connect the parts of the garment at theback', The corsetbedy halves are' al'so provided with depe din skirts '16 Win h preferably ixtnd a-a2 V stitches 24k or otherwise.
rear to the front medial lines thereofmand as shown in the drawing, the garment may also include the front tension straps 17 similar to the corresponding straps shown in Letters Patent, No. 1,127,023, granted to me February 7, 1915. The lower ends of the strap 17 are secured'to'the lower front edges of the skirt sections to both of which are secured depending hose supporters 18 it being understood that other depending hose supporters may be attached to the lower edges of the skirts in suitable positions.
In each corset body half there is a bust gore or section indicated at 19 extending from the upper edge of the corset to a point appreciably beneath the waist line and each bust gore or section 19 is suitably reinforced or supported by stays or bones indicated at 20 and 21. As shown in the drawing two of these stays are employed extending from the upper edge of the corset at which they are appreciably spaced apart to a point 22 in the lower portion of the bust gore or section and also appreciably below the waist line, it being understood that while I have illustrated two of these supporting stays any suitable number may be employed.
As indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the stays 20 and 21 may be attached to the outer surface of the bust gore or section by pocket members 23 secured in place by lines of Also as shown in Fig. 4c, the bust gore or section in each corset body half may be fitted with an overlying insert 25 between which and the material of which the bust gore or section 1s made thebones or stays are placed andbetween the stays the overlying insert 25 may be provided with embroidery or lace indicated diagrammatically at 26. Furthermore as shown in Fig. 5 each bust gore or section may be made double or in two parts 19 and 27 between which the stays 20 and 21 and the pockets containing the same may be placed.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the stay members 20 and 21 preferably are placed in curved lines while substantially diverging toward the upper edge of the garment. Running from the diverging point the stays are slightly curved toward each other and then away from each other and again toward each other adjacent the upper portion of the bust gore. This conformation is found'necessary in order that those portions of the stays approximately between the points 29 and 30 which are forced outwardly by the pressure exerted on the garment by any preponderance of flesh there may be over the stomach of the wearer and this forcing outwardly of these portions of the stays v tends to spread the upper portions thereof to give form to the bust gore and to provide a suitable" support for the bust and as it will be understood the reaction of the garment, against those portions of the body in which there may be a preponderance of flesh tends to distribute and reduce the same. It will, furthermore, be understood that the stays may be placed in other positions to accomplish the same function without departing from the spirit and nature of my invention.
In the structure hereinbefore described the downward tension applied to the lower portion of the bust sections is exerted through the lower front portions of the garment and through the depending strap 17 and the hose supporter 18. In some instances, however, I find it advisable to employ a uniform skirt section, that is to say, a skirt section extending to the front medial line of the garment and to apply the downward pull or tension necessary to effect the desired results directly to the lower portion of the bust section of the garment.
By reference to Fig. 6 and Fig. 7, it will seem that in this construction the garment includes a hose supporter strap 31, the upper portion 32 of which is secured directly to the corresponding lower bust section and being otherwise free from the garment extends downwardly and preferably toward the side of the garment and at its lower end is provided with a hose supporter 33 which passes through a loop 3% secured on the inner side of the skirt adjacent the lower edge thereof in order to maintain the hose supporter strap in its proper position. In this structure the skirts of the corset garment are continuous to the front medial line of the garment as indicated at 35 and below the lower end of the front steels the skirts are provided with members of a hook or other fasteners indicated at 36. In this structure also I prefer to apply hose sup porters 37 connected with the lower edges of skirts at the front thereof.
In still further cases, I find it advisable to employ an abdominal tension strap and by reference to Fig. 8 it will be seen that this structure includes the hose supporter strap similar to that described in connection with Figs. 6 and 7, which in this construction may be termed a side hose supporter strap. To this is added a front hose supporter strap 38 also attached at its upper end to the upper end of the side hose supporter strap and the lower portion of cor responding bust section and being otherwise free from the corset body and the skirts thereof and extending downwardly for the greater part in a line substantially parallel to the lower front edge of the skirt member.
39 designates the yielding tension strap 1 indicated by a line of sewing or stitches 4 0 and this portion of the strap 31 as well as the edge of the yielding strap 39 is secured to the skirt section of the garment for the entire width of the yielding tension strap, that is to say, between the lines indicated by 41 and 42. The forward end of the yielding tension strap is connected to the strap 38 by a member of a hook and in Fig. 8 the socket member 43 of a hook is illustrated it being understood that in the corresponding position in the other half of the garment the stud member of the hook is similarly located. In this instance the lower front edges of the skirts are not connected to gether so that substantially all the strain placed on this part of the garment when the wearer is in a seated position falls upon the yielding tension straps 39 and the hook or other member connecting the same. This permits of a yielding or separation of the front portions of the skirts of the garment when the wearer is seated thereby relieving the strain on the same which they would otherwise have to carry, In this construction the lower end of the strap 38 is connected to one end of a hose-supporter 4C4.
Also as shown in Fig. 9 it may be desirable in some instances to dispense with the yielding tension strap 39 and still advisable to employ a double hose supporter strap in each half of the garment. In this construction the hook member, however, may be applied to the lower front edges of the corset skirts leaving the hose supporter straps free from being attached to the garment except at their upper ends as hereinbefore described, or may be attached to the front hose supporter traps, or may be connected to the skirts and also tothe front hose supporter straps. Otherwise this construction is the same as hereinbefore described in. connection with Figs. 8 and 10.
I claim as my invention:
1. In an apparel corset and in combination with each corset body half, a bust gore or section, stays secured in the bust gore and diverging upwardly from a point in the lower portion of the bust gore appreciably below the waist line, and a strap depending from the lower portion of said bust gore or section to exert a. downward tension causing said bust gore or section to act as a lever with the fulcrum at the lower portion thereof thereby applying pressure against the underlying part of the body of the wearer and forcing outwardly the upper portion of the bust gore or sectlon.
:2. In an apparel corset and in combination with each corset body half, a bust gore or section, stays secured in the bust gore or section and diverging upwardly from a point in the lower portion of the bust gore or section appreciably below the waist line and running in correspondingly curved lines to the upper portion of the bust gore or section, and a strap attached at thelower portion of the bust gore or section and extending downwardly therefrom to exert a downward and rearward tension causing said bust gore or section to act as a lever with the fulcrum at the lower portion of said bust gore or section whereby pressure is exerted against the underlying part of the body of the wearer to force'outwardly the upper portion of the bust gore or section.
8.
