To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL Kors, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Apparel-Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention is an improvement upon and addition to the devices shown and described in an application for Letters Patent filed by me of even date herewith; the structure shown in the present application being the preferred and specific form of the device, while the device of the aforesaid application covers the broader subject matter.

In devices heretofore made and forming part of apparel corsets, crossing straps at the lower front portion of the corset over the abdomen have been employed with hose supporters, the fastening devices of which have been coupled together in fastening the same to the hose to be supported, and these devices while exerting a downward pull also pulled from opposite directions with a crossing tension. They were however, liable to damage the hose because of their simultaneous connection with one another and the hose at one particular place, and the object of the device of my present invention is to effect a combined downward and crossing tension at and below the lower end of the corset over the abdomen and a drawing or pulling around the figure of the wearer at the hips and upper limbs, both tensions producing a figure supporting and reducing function and simultaneous shaping effect, with the parts constructed in such a manner as not at all to interfere with the sitting position of the wearer.

In the device of my invention and in combination with the corset halves having skirt extensions with upright edges that are spaced apart at the front, I employ prolongations or gore flaps from the corset body connected therewith and mainly located back of and between the spaced apart edges of the skirt extensions and separated from the skirt extensions; or in other words, independent thereof except for their connection thereto at the lower ends. I also employ iiexible strap members connected at the front to and as prolongations from the fabric body occupying diagonal crossing positions and having strap connections to the lower edges and forward ends of the skirt extensions which may be adjustable and from the unions of which parts hose supporter straps extend downward. These strap connections are separable so as to facilitate putting on or taking off the corset and the adjustability of said straps if employed provides more effectually for the production of an even flat condition of the parts under substantially equal tension, so that with this device the several parts employed smoothly overl'ie and extend around the figure and under the drawing action of tension of the hose supporters the tension is distributed to such an extent that the desired result is effected without distorting or displacing, or in any sense making uneven the various parts of the structure employed. I have shown in the drawing and prefer to employ in the corset of my improvement the gore sections Z d1 because by their small area and the several lines of sewing securing the same to the corset a strong substantially un-stretchable construction is insured, al-

though I do not limit myself thereto.

e e1 represent gore flaps. These are secured to or are prolongations of the fabric body of the corset below the lower ends of the bones and bone pockets. They have upright edges that substantially meet at the front central line of the corset from which they taper off. diverging toward the lower edges and forward ends of the skirt extensions 1. These gore flaps are secured to the lower edges and forward ends of the skirt extensions by a line of sewing 5 which may also be the line of sewed union of the hose supporters c c1 to the same place. Otherwise than this the gore flaps c el are free of all connections with the skirtextensions. These gore flaps c c1 in use are under the tension of the hose supporters c c1 and have a flattening tendency upon the abdomen controlled, assisted and made more effective by the straps f1 hereinafter described. The lower ends of the front steels extend down into these gore flaps.

have shown and also employ straps f f1. rIhese are shown as secured along their upper edges to the lower edges of the gore sections Z1 and along vertical edges l() to extensions of the upright edges 3 3 and these straps are located diagonally; that is, their free ends from each half of the corset extend away from 'the line of the steel over toward the other half of the corset7 consequently when the halves of the corset are connected by the usual fastening devices of the steels, these straps cross one another and also preferably extend beyond the points of crossing'. Instead of making these straps f fl as shown and described with reference to my co-pending application hereinbefore mentioned. I prefer to make each one as a continuous piece from its sewed upper end to the corset to its lower separable end, to make said straps tapering and to provide not only for the separable connection of their free ends but for an adjustment to lengthen or shorten the same. These straps therefore extend over the lower ends l5 of the steels and in use under tension hold down said lower ends, increasing the smooth contour of the corset and giving an abdominal support and reinforce.

At the right hand side of Fig. l I have shown the strap f with a slotted plate G and coupler-plate 7 the end of the strap passing` through the slot of the coupler-plate and returning to fastening with the center bar y of the slotted plate. This provides for adjustment in the length of the strap. At the left hand side of Fig. l, l have shown the free end of the strap f1 as simply secured to the coupler-plate 7, its length having been determined and the strap requiring no adjustinent.

The device of my invention can be made in either of these ways without departing from or changing the nature of my invention.

The strap ends e' L are simply loops through the eye of the hook-plate S, said plate having a hook-end to engage the slotted end of the coupler 7.

The dotted line y, y. of Fig. l represents the line of fold of the flexible material of the parts coming below the boned portions of the corset in the sitting position of the wearer so that the line or fold is freely made in flexible material without any injurious pressure or without any tendency to bend the parts that are in any sense rigid and which might injure the wearer.

The section Fig. taken on the line ac. fr, is made in part through an edge of a skirt extension and through the gore flap el showing that the one underlies the other and that the parts are distinct and separate. Said section is also taken through both skirt extensions, both gore straps and both flexible crossing straps and shows that the two skirt extensions are on the saine line. the two gore flaps on the same line back of the skirt extensions and the two flexible crossing straps on substantially the same lines as the skirtextensions; the one simply overlying the other; therefore in use these parts as shown in this section are superposed. they coact first for a covering and support and tension over the abdomen. and se tond, for a drawing around effect over the abdomen and around the upper part of the limbs so as to produce a flat front effect as well as a support to the figure and a smooth even and unwrinkled setting for a garment.

lt is entirely immaterial which of the flexible crossing straps overlies the other, but it will be apparent from Fig. l that the tension of the hose supporters c f1 is downward upon the skirt extensions and gore flaps; at a downward inclination upon the flexible crossing straps f f1 connecting with the skirt extensions, and that the flexible crossing straps have a drawingtendency between their point of union atl their upper ends and their union with the lower edges of the skirt extensions. tending to pull the upright edges of the skirt extensions toward one another and so contract the area of the skirt extensions, and that this tendency as it were, is straightened out by the tension upon the hose supporters c c1, all of the parts co-acting and conspiring for the performance of the functions herein ascribed to them.

I claim as my invention:

l. An apparel corset comprising with the corset halves and skirt extensions from the lower edges thereof; flexible inclined crossing straps secured to the lower edges of the corset halves, and removable connections from the free ends of said straps to the lower edge and forward opposite corners of the skirt extensions and hose supporters secured at the said corners of said skirt extensions.

2. An apparel corset comprising with the corset halves and skirt extensions from the lower edges thereof; flexible crossing straps secured to the lower edges of the corset halves and each having a forwardly inclined portion and connections from the free ends of said straps to the lower edge and forward corner of the skirt extensions, and hose supporters secured at the same places of union and gore flaps located back of the aforesaid parts extending downward from the fabric body of the corset and free of said skirt extensions and straps but secured at their lower free ends to the lower edges and forward ends of the skirt extensions, substantially as set forth.

3. An apparel corset comprising with the corset halves, gore sections in the front portions of the corset at lower ends of the steels, and skirt extensions or prolongations of the fabric body below the bone pockets and bones, flexible crossing straps secured along inclined and vertical upper edges to the lower edges of the gore sections and corset body and having free lower ends each extending forward in the plane of the corset body and adapted when in position to cross one another, gore flaps extending downward from the lower end of the gore sections of the corset body and underlying the skirt extensions and the flexible crossing straps and free therefrom except for sewed lines of union ofthe gore flaps to the lower edges and forward ends of the skirt extensions, hose supporters secured to this same line of union and extending downward therefrom, coupler-plates for connection secured to the free ends of the flexible straps, and strap ends secured to the skirt extensions and having hook-plates for connection with the said coupler-plates, substantially as set forth.

4. An apparel corset comprising with the corset halves and skirt extensions from the lower edges thereof; flexible crossing straps of tapering forni secured at their upper broader ends to the lower edges of the corset halves and each inclining forwardly and at their narrow free ends having connecting devices, other connecting devices co-acting therewith and secured to the lower edge and forward corners of the skirt extensions, and hose supporters secured at the same point of union, substantially as set forth.

5. An apparel corset comprising with the corset halves and skirt extensions from the lower edges thereof; flexible crossing straps of tapering form secured at their upper broader ends to the lower edges of the corset halves and each inclining forwardly and at their narrow free ends having connecting devices, other co-acting connecting devices secured to the lower edge and forward corners of the skirt extensions, and hose supporters secured at the same point of union, and slotted plates upon said tapering straps with the free ends of the tapering straps passed through the coupler-plates and back to connection with the slotted plates providing for a longitudinal adjustment of the tapering straps, the said tapering straps crossing and diverging, substantially as set forth.

6. An apparel corset comprising with the corset halves and skirt extensions from the lower edges thereof, with upright edges spaced apart at the front, flexible straps secured to the corset halves above the lower edges thereof and lower ends of the front steels between the upright spaced apart edges of the skirt extensions and said flexible straps crossing the one over the other and also over the lower ends of the steels and their free ends extending down to connection with the lower edge and forward corners of the skirt extensions and means for applying tension at said places of union.
