BY M
United States Patent 3,142,392 GmDLE FRONT CQNSTRU 'CTHONS Bette K. Schonberg, Scotch Plains, N..l., assignor to Maidenform, line, New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Mar. 1, 1962, Ser. No. 176,718 1 Claim. (Cl. 128-542) The object of the present invention is to provide a girdle with or without a pantie arrangement, which will have improved resiliency and support at the abdominal area, which will transmit the front garter pull in a major degree directly to the hip line, and which will transmit the lower abdominal pull to the hip line. The customary girdle front panel which has vertical stretch only is maintained against distortion by the abdomen and wrinkling, and far longer wear and greater comfort is accomplished.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front plan view, certain elements being shown in dotted lines.
FIG. 2 is a rear view, partly broken away to expose the inner construction of the girdle front.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the embodiment shown is that of a pantie girdle. By eliminating the crotch piece the pantie formation can be changed to that of a standard girdle, by normal and simple operation.
As customary, the outer fabric of the girdle will be a two-way stretch material except for the front panel 1 and the rear panel 2, which will be of vertical stretch only. The front panel 1, in the present embodiment, comprises two sections joined by a seam at 3 and the fabric at each side of the seam is reinforced, preferably by turning the fabric inwardly upon itself, as to each section of panel 1 or applying a narrow tape, the said reinforcing being indicated at 1". In either case the reinforcement will be vertically stretchable. The seam line 3 joins the front panel sections at the longitudinal center of the girdle front area.
Extending across the under face of each section of front panel 1 is an upwardly inclined and longitudinally elastic band 4, which at its outer end margin is stitched to the seam which connects the front panel to the twoway stretch body fabric of the garment. The lower ends of the band assembly 4 lie substantially above the lower margin of the central front panel.
Below the bands 4 are like-positioned bands 5 which extend upwardly toward the waist band 6 and therefore at the hip area of the garment. Each band assembly is stitched at its margins not only to the front panel 1, but to the two-way stretch body material of the garment, the lower end being seamed to the longitudinally elastic reinforcement 1 appropriate to the band, and the upper end of each band 4 being seamed to the marginal edge of an appropriate section of panel 1; and the outer edge of each band 5 is connected by a seam indicated at 7, FIG. 2, which joins the front section of the body fabric to the rear section.
From each of said scams 7 and adjacent the upper end of band 5, in each case, is positioned a downwardly and inwardly inclined band 8, seamed at its marginal edges to the body fabric and preferably continuing below the face 10 of the garment, to serve as a connection for a garter buckle 9. Thus the two bands 8 converge at the front of the girdle, and the pull of the front garters is directed to the hip area of the girdle. The base of the girilqlpe, as customary, will carry rear garters as indicated at It thus will be seen that the co-action of abdominal and hip outward pressure will effect a flattening action upon front panel 1, particularly near the base of the abdomen, through extension of band 5 at each section of the front panel, and that the bands 4 will assist such action because their upper ends lead from the two-way stretch body material diagonally. Also, direct pull upon the base hem of the garment by the front garters is substantially reduced in that upon such pull the longitudinal elastic bands 8 will come into action and transmit pull along the thigh and to the hip of the wearer.
It will be understood that various modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of the elements forming the embodiment illustrated in the drawings without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
A girdle having in combination a main body fabric of two way stretch material and having a waist band, a front area and a back area, a central front panel formed of two sections joined at the longitudinal center of the girdle front area and seamed at its margins to said main body fabric, said central front panel having longitudinal stretch only, a first set of two bands of longitudinal stretch material, each band being seamed to one section of said central front panel and the bands extending diagonally and forming a V-shaped band assembly extending upwardly from their lower ends, which lower ends lie sub stantially above the lower margin of said central front panel, the upper ends of said bands terminating at the side margins of said central front panel, a second set of two bands of longitudinal stretch material, each seamed to said central front panel along the lower margin of said front panel, said front panel margin having a V-shaped lower line, said second set of bands extending beyond said front panel and extending to the outer side of the girdle front area, and a longitudinally stretchable band seamed to said girdle front area at each outer side thereof and extending diagonally thereof, and inwardly, from approximately the upper end of an appropriate band of said second set of bands to the lower margin of the girdle.
