BATHING sun. APPLICATION FI LED OCT. 9. 1917.

Application flied October 9.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gsonop A. MA'ITERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing- Suits, of which the following is a specification'.
My invention relates to bathing-suits of the one-piece type, covering the torso in full and only so much of the nether-limbs as is necessary to retain the garment in place.
With suits of this type, which frequently are worn for many hours, whether in the water or while the wearer is lolling on the sands, convention requires the use of apair of over-trousers,espeeially when out of the water, but which may or may not be dis-v carded when thewearer is actually bathing; These trousers. are, however, usually very much abbreviated, and being quite loose do not aflord that protection which both modesty and decency require.
To meet these conditions, as well as to provide that ready access which nature demands in View of the lengthof time the suit is usually worn, the garment is sometimes provided at the crotch with'a flap which is drawn up in front a short distance and is buttoned across the lower abdominal region of the garment. This expedient "while answering in part, is not Wholly effective. for its position and size, and its lines of fastening are not such as to fully confine those parts which it is the purpose to cover and conceal.
.The object of my invention is to meet all these conditions in full, and in a simple and effective manner; and to this end -1nvent1on consists in the novel bathing suit which I shall now fully describe by reference to the accompanying drawings,- in
' which- Figure 1 is a front plan view of my bathin% suit, showing its front opening closed. ig. 2 is a view, broken, showing the front of thegarment thrown open.
The suit comprises a body portion 1 which at its neck 2 and arm-holes 3 is of the customary closed one-shoulder-button Specification of Letters Patent.

type, and is adapted to cover p the Whole torso.- The lower end of the body portion 1 is continued to form the abbreviated-leg portions 4, with the usuai gusset 5 iet'into the crotch. v
7 With the exception of the neck and arm holes, and the opening in its lower part, hereinafter described, the body portionis permanently closed throughout its circum ference.
In the front, the garment is open on the line 6- 6, beginning at a point in the median line about at the navel region, and thence extending down to the front apex of the gusset, and along one side of the latter to the leg portion on that side, and along the mner'slde of said leg to its lower extremity. This opening is 'provided on one side with a suitable facing 7 carrying buttons 8, and on the other side with a suitable overlaphus a part of the body portion and the whole length of the leg portion may be unbuttoned and thrown back when but when buttoned, the gaimeht constitutes a perfect covering and is confining as a,
pair of trousers Though I have described the opening as being in the front f the garment, itis obvious that it may be'in precisely a some spending position in the. hacir. drawings may therefore indicate either a front or a back plan.
I claim A bathing suit having a. eiosed "torso portion of the one-shot!icior hutton type and the gusset and along the inside of one'of the required, 7
leg portions to its extremity; and means for 1 detachubly closing said opening.
In testimony whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. MATTERN.
