IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEADS.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Beit known that I, SAMUEL OBERHOLZER, of Vheaton, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads; of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had in so doing to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a bedstead provided with myiniprovements, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same, one side ot' the bedstead being broken away so as to show the manner in which my improvement is applied. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the slats of the bedstead, and Fig. trepresents an end view of the saine.

Nature and Object of my Ineenton.

My invention relates to thatclass of bedsteads which are constructed of head'and foot pieces, united by side pieces, the latter being provided with cleats upon their inner sides for the support of the slats.

The sides of bedsteads constructed in this manner are frequently forced apart by the slats, owing to the weight supported by the latter, so that the slats drop from their places. rlhe joints `between the sides and ends of the bedsteads are also frequently injured by reason of the sides being pressed apart in the manner described.

I am aware that attempts have been made to prevent these objectionable results by at taching the slats to the cleats, but these attempts have resulted in splitting the cleats, or drawing them from the side pieces.

The object of my invention is to avoid the objectionable features abovementioned; and

to that end my invention consists in providing the sides of the bedstead with a metallic rectangular plate, so arranged thereon that the plate will support the central slat, the horizontal portion of the plate being perforated. I also provide the ends of the central slat with pins, preferably in the manner shown and described, so arranged thereon that the pins will rest in the perforations above mentioned, when the slat is in its proper position and supported by the said plates. As many slats may be supported and retained in position in this manner as may be deemed desirable.

General Description.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of side rails B, cleats C, plates E, pins F, and slats D, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
