Description

(No Mode-1.)
J. WISHARD,
SPRING BED BOTTOM.-
No. 273,660. Patented Mar.6,1883.
WITNESSES VE NTOR p r w j UN T D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WISHARD, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 273,660, dated March 6, 1883.
Application filed January 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WISHARD, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of the under side of my improved spring bed-bottom, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to improvements in spring bed-bottoms; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a frame provided with cross-slats, which rest upon the springs, and upon which the bedding is placed. The springs are composed of a lower flat wooden strip, B, and an upper one, (J, which are fastened together at the middle. These strips are made of tough and elastic wood, and the square ends of the lower ones rest in the slat-supporting notches in the sides of the bed-frame K, while the ends D of the upper strips, 0, are pointed and beveled upon the sides E and fit into and slide in notches F in the under side of the side pieces, G, of the upper frame, A. These notches are outwardly and upwardly inclined, and their sides Ti-e converging toward their outer ends and beveled, so as to correspond in shape to the pointed beveled ends D, and allow the latter to slide in them as the springs yield to the weight placed upon them, at the same time preventing them from slipping out, the width of the notches and ends D being greatest at the upper side.
. Two bars, H, one upon each sideof the center of the springs, and provided with rubber sleeves I, one for each strip or spring, are introduced between the ends of the springs and brought to bear in the forks formed by the strips B (J, serving to hold the ends apart and to increase the springiness of the strips.
Spiral metal springs J may be introduced between the ends of the strips to increase the springiness ot' the bed, and to balance the slatframe in the sides.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- I. In a spring bed-bottom of the described class, the combination of thewooden springs B (J, fastened together at theirmiddle, the upper ones, (J, having pointed ends D, beveled upon their sides E, with the side pieces, G, of the upper frame,A, having notches F, inclined upward and outward, and pointed and beveled corresponding to the pointed and beveled ends D, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a. spring bed-bottom of the described class, the combination of the wooden springs B O, fastened together at their middle, with the bars H, having rubber sleeves I, one for each spring, and inserted on both sides in the forks formed by springs B O, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The herein-described spring-bed, consisting of the flat wooden springs B O, the upper ones, 0, having pointed beveled ends D E, frame A, having pointed beveled notches F in its side pieces, G, and bars H, having rubber sleeves I, all constructed and combined as and for the purpose shown and set forth. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH WISHARD.
