IMPROVENINT IN SPRING-BOTTOM CTS.
Spfciication fr rming part of Letters Patent No. 147,668, dated February 17, 1874; application filed October 11, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS F.. LORD and in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Spring Bed-Bottom and Cot, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved device arranged for use as a cot. Fig. 2 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line m x, Fig. l. Fig. 8 is a detail top viewof one of the slats with its spring and cross-bar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
The frame consists of two side bars, A, connected at their ends by two cross-strips, B, and near their ends by two cross-bars, C. The frame A B C is provided at one or both ends with an end board, D, the lower ends of the standards of which are pivoted to the side bars A A, and are inclined 0r beveled to rest upon the cross-strips B, which are set inclined to receive them, so that the said end board may be supported in an upright position, as shown in Fig. l. E are the legs, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the side bars A, and the lower parts of each pair of which are connected by a cross-strip, F. In the ends of the cross-strips F are formed slots, the inner parts of which are made sufficiently large to receive the heads of the braces G, and their outer parts are made narrow to lit upon the necks of said bracesG. Thev braces G are pivoted to the side bars A in such a position that their heads, when the legs E are extended, may pass through the larger parts of the slots in the cross-strips F. The braces G are then slipped close up to the legs E, which brings their necks into the narrow parts of the slot-s in the cross-strips F, and securely fastens the said legs E in place.
This construction enables the legs E and braces G to be turned up along the inner sides of the side bars A, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, so as to be entirely out of the way, and ada-pt the cot for use as a bed-botton1, or enable it to be compactly packed for transportation or storage.
The end board D, when not required for use, may be turned down upon the slats H. The slats H are placed above, and are kept from contact with the cross-bars C by the wire springs I. The springs I are each formed of a wire, the middle part of which is bent to form a loop, upon which the slats H rest. The arms of the loop project to the cross-bar C, are bent downward to pass through holes in the said cross-bar C, and their ends are bent upward to the slats H, and have hooks formed upon them, which, by being sprung toward each other, are inserted in a recess formed in the middle part of the under side of the slats H, and, when released, the said hooks spring ont ward and ent-er a transverse hole formed through said slats H, where they are held by the elasticity of the wire, and by which the slats H are held in place.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of thel side bars A with pivoted cot-legs E, of pivoted braces G, having narrow necks, and cross-bars F, having taperin g slots, as and for the purpose described.
FRANCIS E. LORD. HERMAN K. BLANCHARD.
