ANDREW a GRAHAM co., pnoTmumocRnPuzns WASNINGTUN, D. c,
CHARLES B. EATON, OF BELFAST, MAINE.
BED-HAMMOCK.
Speeification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 18, 1909.
Patcnted May 31, 1910.
Serial No. 513,476.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. EATON, a citizen of the United States of America, resdng at Belfast, in the county of WValdo and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bed hammocks, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide simple and relable means for suspending a wooden frame mattress and for providing head and foot members to be attached to the side rails of the mattress.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bed hammock comprisng a wooden frame mattress andhead and foot members having means for attaching curtains thereto, said head and foot members being Suspended from ropes or cables to form a swingng bed.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the Construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed hammock made in a'ccordance with my invention. Fg. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the side rails and 2 the head and foot rails of the mattress member of the bed. These rails are preferably formed of woocl, and the wire mesh 3 is connected in any suitable manner to the rails 1 and 2. The head and foot members are of substantially identical constructon, and hence a description of one will serve as a description for both. These head and foot members are preferably formed each of a single piece of metal bent into proper form, and as shown they each comprise upright members 4: having inwardly extending feet 5 and a cross bar 6 at the upper ends of said upright members, said cross bar at opposite ends thereof being provided with a loop 7 for the attachment of ropes or cables 8, said ropes or cables being provided each with an eye 9 to be connected to a suspendng rope or cable for the bed. For securing the head and foot members to the mattress, staples or keepers 10 are provided, said staples straddlng the side rails l and the ends thereof passing through the feet 5 and being provided with threaded ends upon which are fitted nuts 11. The uprights 4 and the cross bars 6 are provided with perforations at suitable distances apart, and curtains 12 are secured to said head and foot members by means of cords 13 extending through the perforations in the curtains and through the perforations in the uprights 4: and cross bar 6.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the head and foot members can be readily detached from the mattress member and laid flat thereon for shipping or when not required for use may be packed within a small com ass. By means of my invention the hea and foot members can be readily attached to any suitable mattress without special appliances.
I claim l. A bed hammock comprisng a mattress, head and foot members connected to the mattress, said head and foot members each comprisng a pair of uprights, inwardly extending feet, staples oonnecting the side rails of the mattress to said feet, loops at the upper ends of said uprights and a connected cross bar, curtains connected to said head and foot members, and suspending ropes or cables connected to said loops.
2. A bed hammock comprisng a wire mattress having a wooden frame, head and foot members connected to said frame and provided with inwardly extending feet upon which the frame rests, staples for securing said frame to said head and foot members, the latter being provided with upwardly eX- tending loops and a cross bar, and suspending ropes or cables connected to said loops.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES B. EATON.
