To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. STALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsford, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cribs, of which the Vfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to cribs, the object of the invention being to providea swinging crib which is simple and inexpensive of construction, which may be suspended from suitable supports, in a ready and convenient manner for either outdoor or indoor use, and from which the infant cannot crawl or fall, thus insuring safety without the constant service of an attendant.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a crib embodying my invention. F ig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.
The crib is of the conventional oblong rectangular form and openvvork construction, and may be of either wood or metal, the latter being preferred. It comprises an upper rectangular frame portion 1 and a lowerl rectangular frame portion 2, which may be conveniently made from strips of strap-iron bent into form and each having its ends suitably united.
The end rails of the frame sections 1 and 2 are connected by spaced rods or bars 3, while the side rails of said frame sections are connected by spaced rods or bars t. The bottom of the crib is formed by cross bars or rods 5, closely enough arranged to enable the bedding to be supported thereon without sagging. Preferably the bars L and 5 are made of continuous strips of material, each bar 5 being integral with the lower ends of the alining bars 4;, providing U-shaped bars or rods which pass through openings in the side rails of the lower frame portion 2 and are terminally fastened to the side rails of the upper frame portion 1. At the center of the crib a U-shaped stop brace 6 is provided in lieu of central rods, its vertical arms 7 being secured at their upper ends to the upper frame portion and integral at their lower ends with the central cross piece 8 of said brace, which passes under and is suitably secured to the side rails ofthe lower frame portion. Vertical braces 9 of flat strips of material, also take the place of central end rods and are secured at their upper and lower ends to the end rails of the upper and lower frame portions. The upper ends of said strips 9 are extended above the crib body and apertured, as at 10, to receive hooks or the like at the ends of suspension cords, chains or ropes 11, by which the crib may be suspended, like a hammock or in any other manner, from suitable supports, either indoors or outdoors, so as to swing either sidewise or endwise.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that a crib constructed according to my invention may be manufactured and sold at a low cost, that it may be swung to and fro to lull the child to sleep, and that the parts may be properly proportioned as to render it impossible for an infant to roll or crawl out, whereby safety is insured without the constant service of an attendant.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is z- A crib comprising an upper rectangular frame portion formed from a single piece of strap metal, a corresponding lowerrectangular frame portion also formed from a single piece ofstrap metal,`said frame portions presenting flat side and end rails, the side rails of the lower frame portion being provided with openings, rods connecting the end rails of the frame portions, rods connecting the side rails of the frame portions, cross rods forming the bottom of the crib and integral with the lower ends of the latter named rods, said rods being passed at their points of union through the openings in the side rails of the lower frame ortion, U-shaped strap metal braces centra ly connecting the side rails of the frame portions and extending transversely beneath the lower frame portion, and strap metal long braces centrally secured to the end rails of the frame portions and havin their upper ends projected above the top frame portion and provided with openings to form hangers for connection with sus ension devices.
