No. 131,438. Patented Sep.17,1872.
I n v e 11% o v UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES W. HAMPTON, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,438, dated September 17, 1872.
useful Improvements in Bed-Bottom; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spring bedbottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will nowproceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved bed-bottom.
A A represent two side-bars, connected by a cross-bar, B, at each end, and a bar, 0, in the center, forming the frame upon which the bed-bottom is supported, At or near each end of the center cross-bar O is secured a wooden spring, D, the ends of which extend to, or nearly to, the ends of the frame, and pass into notches or recesses made in the under sides of bars E E. These springs D D are secured at their centers of the crossbar 0. These bars are located above and parallel with the crossbars B B of the frame, and support the slats G G, as shown. The bars E E are supported by spiral springs H' H attached to the crossbars B B of the frame, and resting on the same. The wooden springs D D assist in supporting the bed-bottom, and at the same time act as braces to keep the spiral springs from sagging sidewise.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The withindescribed bed-bottom, consisting of the frame A B O, notched bars E E, notched slats G G, coil-springs H H, and the wooden springs D D secured to the bar 0, all as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this19th day of July, 1872.
JAMES W. HAMPTON.
