IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOWIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,507, dated March 12, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottom, invented by WARRET OWEN and STEPHEN HARTER, of Pierceton, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana.

()ur invention has for its object to furnish an improved spring bed-bottom, simple in construction, comfortable in use, and not liable to get out of order, and which shall be so constructed as to be level when supporting the weight of the sleepers, and to tend to rise somewhat in the center when the weight is removed, and thus give the bed an appearance of being full; and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the bed-bottom, as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the lower side bars of the bed-bottom, to the centers of which are bolted or otherwise securely attached the upper side bars B, which are made shorter than the side bars A, and are so arranged that the ends of the bars A B, at the head end of the bed-bottom, may be even with each other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The end parts of the upper bars B are raised from the end parts of the lower bars A by wedges O driven between said bars toward their centers or points, where they are secured to each other. The wedges 0 should be adjustably secured in place, so that they may be moved out and in, as may be required, to regulate the spread of the said bars A B. The ends of the bars B at the head endof the bedbottom are connected by the cross-bar D, the end parts of which, that rest upon the ends of the bars B, are beveled off, as shown in Fig. 4 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This construction raises the inner edge of the cross-bar D, and
tends to raise the middle part of the longitudinal spring-slats E, the ends of which are securely attached to the said cross-bar D. At the foot end of the bed-bottom are three crossbars, F G H. The crossbar F is securely attached to the ends of the lower side bars A. The cross-bar G rests upon the ends of the upper side bars B, which may be faced with metal to prevent wear. The cross-bar H is securely attached to the ends of the longitudinal slats E. The slats E pass over and rest uponthe crossbar G, to which some or all of them are secured. To the lower side of the center of the cross-bar F is secured the center of the crossbar I, the end parts ofwhich are held away from. the cross-bar F by the wedges J driven between the end parts of the bars F I, toward their centers, and adjustabl y secured in place. The cross-bar I is shorter than the cross-bar F, and to its ends are attached wires or other suitable connections K, which pass up through holes in the crossbar F, and are attachedto the cross-bar H, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The effect of this is to draw the ends of the slats E downward against the upward pressure applied to them by the bars B, through the crossbar G, and thus to tend to raise the middle parts of the slats E. The cross-bars G and H are connected by short longitudinal bars L, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By this construction the longitudinal slats E will be horizontal while supportin'g'a weight, but will tend to rise in their middle parts when the weight may be removed.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved spring bed-bottom formed by the combination of the side bars A B, wedges O, longitudinal slats E, cross bars D F G H I,
