GUSTAV HANKE, OF ADDIEVILLE. ILLINOIS.
SLIDING LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20 191%.
Application filed May 18, 1916. Serial No. 98,359.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GUSTAV Hanna, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Addieville, in the county of Washington and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Latches, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the class of locks and latches and has particular ref erence to a new and useful improvement in barn door latches and the like.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a latch of the class described. which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, strong and durable and etfectivein operation, the device being adapted for attachment to the frame of a barn door or the like, a sliding bar member being provided for engagement with the door.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a latch of the class described having improved holding means associated therewith, said holding means being arranged to engage with the latch member, the arrangement of the device preventing animals from moving the latch and opening the door. The latch may be used independently or mav be associated with other latching devices. However, I do not claim any combination between the latch and other latch devices.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved barn door latch will appear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a latch embodying the improvements of my invention, the same being shown applied in operative position;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the same; and
Fig. 3 is vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 and 2 designate a door frame and swinging door, respectively. The base of my improved latch is designated 3 and is preferably mounted on the door frame 1 adjacent the door. The latch body 3 is in the form of a rectangular frame provided with a transverse recess a on the rear face thereof. The base is secured to the door frame 1 by means of screws 5 or the like.
The latch base 3 is also provided with a longitudinally arranged passage (3 opening at the lower end of said body and comm unicating with the recess 4:. A rod 7 is slidably mounted in the aperture 6, the upper free end of the rod 7 being provided with a laterally bent tongue 8 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. A supplemental recess 9 is provided in the base 3 communicating with the recess t. for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The bolt arm is designated 10 and is provided with enlargements 11 and 12 on the free extremities thereof, said enlargements extending outwardly from the door and door frame. The bolt arm 10 is provided with a pair of oppositely arranged notches 13 adjacent one end thereof, said notches serving the purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The lower end of the rod '7 is provided with a finger engaging portioir 14 for manipulating said rod vertically in the passage 6.
In use, the base of the latch is applied to a door frame as best shown in Fig. 1. The bolt arm 10 is first placed within the recess at and the base 3 cooperates with the door frame for retaining said bolt arm in operative position. WVhen moved into the position shown in Fig. 2 the rod 7 becomes engaged with the bolt arm by virtue of the tongue 8, said rod dropping by gravity whereby the tongue 8 engages in one of the notches 13. Two of the notches are provided in order that the device may be reversed when desired, thereby facilitating application of the device to various types of doors, without altering the construction of the door or of the device. The holding rod 7 is an automatic locking means for the bolt arm 10, said arm extending across a portion of the door 2 as shown in Fig. 1 for retaining the door in closed position.
It will be readily apparent that I have provided in my improved latch a simple and effective means for application to doors of various types. It will also be readily apparent that the device may be used in combination with the ordinary latch devices without altering the construction of my im proved latch.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and de-- scribed my invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes 'may be made in said structure as do not depart from the'spirit and scope of theinvention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A latch of the class described including an elongated base member, said member having a transversely extending recess in one face thereof, the upper wall of said recess having a supplemental recess formed therein, a bolt arm slidably mounted in the transversely extending recess with its side edges engaging the side walls of the same,
mounted through said passage and having its upperend extending into the recess, and a laterally extending tongue on the upper extremity of said rodwhen inoperative adapted to be normally positioned in the supplemental recess and toslide onthe adjacent edge' of the bolt arm, said tongue being adapted to drop:int0 the notch insaid arm when the notch and thesupplemental recess are alined. M
In testimony whereof, I afliii my signature hereto.
GUSTAV HANKE'.
