To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE \V. CLAYTON and JOHN MORRISON, citizens of the United States, residing at Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Cigarette and Match Box, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates broadly to metallic receptacles, and more particularly to a combination cigarette and match box.

As the primary object, this invention contemplates .the provision of a receptacle provided with a plurality of compartments for effectively receiving cigarettes and both ordinary and safety matches, covers being connected to the receptacle for closing the compartments.

It is a more specific object of this invention to construct the entire device so that it may be readily carried in the pocket of the user and conform to the contour of the pocket; to provide means for removably holding the covers in a closed position; to provide the 'main cover with means for receiving marks which will identify the owner of the device in case it is lost.

A still further object of our invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.

Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of our inven tion will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connec tion with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, we provide a receptacle 1 formed preferably of metal and Specification of Letters Patent.

gradually curved longitudinally throughout its length. Partitions 2 and 3 extend transversely of the receptacle and in closely spaced parallel relation with each other being arranged adjacent one end of the receptacle to provide a large compartment 4, which is adapted for receiving cigarettes. The smaller of the compartments is suldivided by short transversely arranged partitions 5 and (3 the respective ends of which are secured to the partition 3 and to the adjacent end of the receptacle. In the compartment 7 thus provided, a plurality of the usual matches may be safely and conveniently carried while the other compartment 8 provided by the partition 5 is especially adapted for receiving safety matches.

In order to close the compartments, we have provided a substantially T-shaped blank 9 of sheet metal and soldered or otherwise secured the same to the free edges of the partitions 2, 3, 5 and 6, the said blank covering the space between these compartments as is apparent upon reference to the accompanying drawings. Of course if de sired, this piece may be formed integral with one side of the receptacle and bent down and thence soldered in position. A large rectangular and longitudinally curved cover 10 is pivotally connected to one edge of the blank through the medium of hinges 11, while the outer end carries a resilient snap 12 engageable at times with a stud 1?, on the end of the cover. This cover is pref erably provided with a recess 14: substantially oval in configuration and adapted for receiving a photograph of the owner of the device or else may receive suitable engraving the point being chiefly suitable means whereby the owner can identify his property in case it is lost. The ribbon 15 en graved on the cover 10 provides an outline for surrounding the name or address of the owner and thereby assist in the identification. Attention is directed to the fact that it is not necessary to provide a deep recess but only one that will allow a photograph if one is used, to lie flush with the surface of the receptacle. It is obvious that it is not necessary to provide the recesses in every instance and some would not deem it essential. Another cover 16 is arranged in the compartment for receiving the ordinary matches and is secured to the blank 9 by means of hinges 17. The fastening means 18 for removably holding the cover in position is similar to that employed for holding the main cover in closed position, although it is on a smaller scale. Another cover 19 is pivoted by means of hinges 20 to the blank 9 and serves to close the safety match box. It is held in position by suitably securing means 21 similar to the securing means 18.

It will be noted by the arrangement of the spaced partitions 2, 3, 5 and 6 whose edges are engaged by the blank member 9, which substantially forms one of the side walls of the retainer, that provision is made to permit the lids or covers of the box to be opened at their full extent at the same time without interfering with each other. Moreover, this arrangement of the partitions gives great strength and rigidity to the side walls of the receptacle so that they will withstand pressure which would otherwise crush or mash the walls. The partitions 5 and G, as shown in the drawing, have one of their edges engaged by the covers 19 and 16, respectively, and thereby provide solid supports or rests for the lids or covers when they are closed.

To facilitate the ignition of the matches, we have secured a strip of material 22 to one side of the receptacle which serves as a striker for the safety matches. A match striking strip 23 is connected to the same side as is the strip 22 and lies adjacent thereto serving to permit the ignition of the usual matches carried in the compartment 7 while the finger nail file 2a is connected in any suitable manner to the side of the receptacle adjacent the strip 23 for the convenience of the user.

Although we have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, we desire it to be understood that we are not to be limited to the exact details shown.

iVe desire that great stress be laid upon the arrangement of the plurality of compartments in which the cigarettes and matches are conveniently and compactly arranged, and also in the construction of the receptacle.

From the above description taken in con nection with the accompanying drawing, it can easily be seen that we have provided a device that is simple in construction, containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
