CLAMP FOB. ADVERTISING, MANIFOLIDING, AND OTHER SHEETS.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Application filed April 18, 1916. Serial No. 92,014.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, ALBERT F. BARKER, a citizen of he United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Advertising, Manifolding, and other. Sheets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a clamp for holding sheets of paper, metal and the like, and particularly sheets or cards used for display and advertising purposes. It also is adapted to hold sheets of carbon and transfer paper as used in copying and multigraphing, to enable the same to be more con veniently handled.
The object of my invention is to provide a clamp for the purposes above specified which can be readily applied to and removed from the article to be held; which will hold said article firmly and without injury thereto; and which is of great simplicity, and, therefore, cheap to manufacture.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following specification, when read with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my clamp, showing a sheet of paper or other material held therein.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken in the direction of the arrows on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line H of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of one end of my clamp, showing the method of its attachment to a horizontal surface.v
Fig. 7 is a detailed view of the other end of my clamp, showing a hinged connection with a fixed supporting bracket.
Fig. 8 is showing its use as a handle for a sheet ofcarbon or transfer paper.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a substantially U-shaped main member, the sides of which are 2 and 8 respectively, the edge of the side 2 being extended slightly beyond that of the edge of the side 3. The side 2 has formed at one on the line a rear elevation of my clamp.
end a longitudinally disposed tongue 4:, as seen in Figs. 1 and 5, and at the other end an inwardly and upwardly turned lip 5, as seen in Fig. 2.
A cooperating clamping member 6, of equal length with the U-shaped member 1, is bent longitudinally at an obtuse angle. The upper side 7 of said angle member 6 lies between the two sides 2 and 3 of the U-shaped member 1 when the clamp is assembled, and on account of the shapes of the two members, there are three bearing or clamping lines therebetween, indicated in the sectional views by 8, 9 and 10.
The upper side 7 of the angle member 6 is provided at one end with a downwardly turned lip 11 adapted to slip over and engage the tongue 1 of the U-shaped member, and at its other end it has a tongue 12, as seen in Fig. adapted to pass under and to be engaged by the upturned lip 5 of said U-shaped member. By means of these inter-engaging lips and tongues the two members are held in clamping relation, and locked against direct separation.
The method of operating the clamp is as follows. The two members 1 and 6 being separated, the paper or sheet 13 to be clamped is laid upon the concave side of the angle member 6 and is folded over the edge of the upper side 7 thereof. The side 7, with the sheet 13 folded thereover, is then inserted bodily between the two sides 2 and 3 of the U-shaped member 1, the two members being at the time of assembling slightly displaced lineally. Moving said members into lineal coincidence then causes the aforesaid tongues and lips to interlock, thereby holding the members together, and clamping the sheet 13 along the lines 8, 9 and 10, as shown clearly in Fig. 4:. The free or surplus folded end of the sheet may then be torn off, as shown at 13' in Figs. 4 and 8.
When the clamp is to be used for securing sheets fordisplay or advertising purposes, I provide supporting means therefor. These means are of a socket nature adapted to receive hinge pins, and they may be formed in or secured to the U-shaped member. In the present case I have here shown the socket means as comprising two longitudinally disposed sockets 14c and 15 on the side 2 of the U-shaped member 1, one at each end thereof. One of said sockets, for eX- ample 14:, is provided with a movable pin 16 having an eye 17 at its outer end. Said eye is fastened to the top of a table or shelf 18 by a screw 19, as shown in Fig. 6, and thus supports the clamp in a horizontal position. The square end 20 of said clamp can be moved up against the' edge 18, as shown, to steady the clamp in the desired position, at any angle to the table or shelf, the pin 16 being swung on its pivot screw 19 to the desired angle.
For supporting the clamp for horizontal swinging movement I prefer to employ the means shown in Fig. 7 A hinge bracket 21 is secured to a. vertical surface 22, and carries a rotatable pin 23 whose upper end is bent into a horizontal position, as at 24, and is adapted to enter the socket 15 of the clamp. In either case the clamp is readily removable from its supporting pin, to enable the clamped sheet to be changed or removed.
l/Vhen the clamp is to be used for holding carbon or transfersheets, as for use in manifolding or bookkeeping, the sockets 14- and 15 may be omitted. In this form, illustrated in Fig. 8, the clamp provides a convenient holding means or handle for the carbon or transfer sheet 25, by which, for example, said sheet may be readily inserted between the pages of a ledger or other book without crumpling the sheet or soiling the fingers by handling'it.
I claim 1. A clamp for sheets comprising a main member of U-shape in cross section, and' a coacting clamping member bent longitudinally to an obtuse angle in cross section, said clamping member being fitted within the main member insuch relation as to bind a sheet when folded over one of its edges, against the inner surface of one side of the main member along two lines, one above and one below and against the lower edge copies of this patent may be obtainedior five cents each;
Washington, D. 0.
of the inner surface of the other side of said main member, and inter-engaging devices carried by the two members for lock ing them against direct separation.
2. A clamp for sheets comprising a main member of U-shape in cross section, and a coacting clamping member bent longitudinally to'an obtuseangle in cross section, said clamping member being fitted within the main member in such relation as to bind a sheet when folded over one of its edges, against the inner surface of one side of the main member along two lines, one above and one below and against the lower edge of the inner surface of the other side of said main member, and interengaging devices carried by the two members for locking them against direct separation, consisting of tongues and lips at the ends of said members disposed for engagement and release by a' relative longitudinal movement of the members.
3. A clamp for sheets comprising a main member of U-shape in cross section and a coacting clamping member of angle section, fitted within the main member and adapted by its angularity to bind a sheet when folded over one of its edges, against the inner surfaces of the main member, and interengaging devices carried by the two members for locking them against direct separation, consisting of tongues and lips at the ends of said members disposed for engagement and release by a relative longitudinal movement of the members.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT F. BARKER.
