ADJUSTABLE FOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,220, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed February 15, 1905. Serial No. 245,702.

Be it known that I, MAURICE J. O NEILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stamford, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Folder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive adjustable folder adapted for general use and especially adapted for use in dressmaking to fold the edges of strips of cloth of various widths ready to be pressed down to place by a heated flat-iron, which may be pushed forward over the folded portion of the strip, pushing the folder be fore it and closing down the folded edges, or, if preferred, the flat-iron may be held stationary and the strip drawn through the folder and under the flat-iron.
The requirements are that the device be so inexpensive that it may be manufactured and sold at trifling cost, that it be easy to use, adapted to fold either light or heavy cloth equally well and produce even and regular folds and of easy adjustment to vary the width of the folds within the limits of ordinary dressmaking.
\Vith this and other objects in view 1 have devised the simple and novel folder which I will now describe, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Fi ure 1 is a plan view illustrating my nove folder as in use, a flat-iron being indicated by dotted lines; Fig. 2, an edge view of the folder, showing the folded strip in section; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the adjustable turning-plate detached.
My novel folder comprises two parts only, which are blanked out and formed from sheet metal.
l0 denotes the body, which is preferably made of spring steel or brass and is bent at its mid-length to an elongated'U shape, the side plates, which are specifically indicated by 11, lying substantially parallel and the base of the U, which is formed from the central portion of the plate, forming a relatively fixed turninguide, which is indicated by 12. The edges of the side plates upon one end of the body are provided with notches 13, which are shown as made angular and as registering with each other vertically.
l4 denotes the adjustable turningplate, which is likewise made U-shaped, comprising side plates 15 and a turning-guide 16, formed at the central portion of the plate. The side plates of the adjustable turning-plate lie close enough together so that the adjustable turning-plate may be moved freely within the body. The rear end of the adjustable turning-plate is provided with lugs 17, which are adapted to engage notches 13 in the body, as clearly shown in the drawings, and the for ward end of the adjustable turning-plate is provided with lugs 18, which are adapted to engage the forward end of the side plates of the body, as clearly shown, to prevent detachmont.
In use the adjustable turning-plate is adj usted in the body, so as to place turning-guide 16 at the required distance from fixed turning-guide 12 to give the required width of fold. This adjustment may be easily made by springing the side plates of the body apart sufficiently to detach lugs 17 from the notches in the side plates of the body, thus permitting the adjustable turning-plate to be moved to any desired position, where it may be locked by allowing the side plates of the body to spring to place again, lugs 17 on the ad justable turningplate being, of course, in engagement with notches 133 in the rear end of the side plates of the body. Having adjusted the folder to produce the desired width of fold, the edges of the strip of cloth to be folded, which is indicated by 19, are turned upward and over, as shown in the drawings, and the strip is passed through the folder from back to front, the strip being then drawn through the folder and the folded edges, which are indicated by 20, being pressed down to place by a heated flat-iron. Having started the strip through the folder and pressed down the edges, as shown, the folding of a long strip may be easily effected on an ironing-board by pushing the folder forward by means of the flat iron. The folder as it moves forward will turn over the edges, as shown, and the flat iron will press them down to place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A folder comprising a Ushaped body having side plates and a turning-guide and an adjustable turning-plate lying Within the body and having a corresponding turningguide.
2. A folder comprising a U-shaped body having side plates and a turning-guide and an adjustable turning-plate lying Within the body and having a corresponding turningguide, said body and adjustable turningplate being provided With coacting means for locking the adjustable turning-plate at any required adjustment.
3. A folder comprising a body having side plates provided with notches and a turningguide and an adjustable turning-plate having a corresponding turning-guide and ln s adapted to engage the notches in the si e plates to look the adjustable turning-plate at any required adjustment.
4. A folder comprising a body having side plates provided with notches and a turningguide and an adjustable turning-plate adapted to lie Within the folder and having a corresponding turning-guide, side plates, lugs adapted to engage the notches in the side plates of the body, and lugs at its opposite end engaging the body to prevent detachment.
5. A folder consisting of a body comprising spring side plates and a turning-guide, and an adjustable turning-plate having a corresponding turning-guide and lugs engaging the side plates of the body whereby it is retained at any desired adjustment.
