SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,271, dated February 24, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SOLOMON ADLER, a citi zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Rulers and Line Gages; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and-exact description of the same.

My invention relates to improvements in attachments for rulers; and its object is to provide a simple compact device for the use of bookkeepers, school children, and others to enable themto draw parallel lines.

The invention comprises a ruler of ordinary description having clamp members thereon, one of said members slidable in relation to the other, short foldable graduated arms pivoted on said clamps and adapted to stand 4 "at right anglesto the straight edge of the ruler, stop means to limit the movement of said arms, and the latter" serving as a support for the ruler to keep the straight edge clear of the paper at all times. It comprises details which will be more fully set forth hereinafter, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a plan view of upper side of ruler with arms attached,-also position of arms (folded in under ruler) whennot in use. A represents avcommon ruler, having the usual beveled straight-edge portion 2. At one end of this ruler is secured a clamp 3, having a projection 4, to which is pivoted on the under side thereof a short arm 5. The latter is graduated on its inner edge. A stop 6 on the rear end of the arm engages the projection 4 to limit the outward movement of the arm. When opened out, the arm is adapted to stand with its inner beveled edge at right angles to the straight edge and flush With the end of the ruler. A second clamp 7 is slidable on the ruler and has pivoted to its under side and near the back edge a short arm 8, correspondingly graduated with arm 5. The clamp 7 is made'of a 'springy metal strip, having its ends folded over to engage the front and back of the ruler and allel to each other and parallel lines may .be

readily and accurately drawn at any predetermined distance apart by aid of the graduations on the adjacentedges of said arms. When not in use the arms may be folded in beneath the ruler, leaving the latter to be used for all ordinary purposes. Moreover, the ruler being supported always above the paper by the thickness of the clamps and of the arms, no ink will be transferred from the straight-edge as the latter is slid over the paper.

As not infrequently it is desired to draw parallel lines extending clear across or from edge to edge of the sheet, I have provided short projections 11 at the end of and on the adjacent edges of arms 5 and 8. These projections permit the graduated arms to be separated the full width of the sheet and give a suflicient support and guide for the ruler and keep the latter out of contact with the sheet.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a ruler, of a fixed clamp at one end thereof, a slidable clamp thereon, and short graduated arms pivoted on'the under side of said'clamps.

2. The combination with a ruler, of fixed and slidable clamps thereon, short graduated arms pivoted on the under side and near the back edge of said clamps, and stop means by which the outward movement of said arms is restricted to arcs of ninety degrees each.

3.
