Description

F. HOWARD.
FILING DEVIGE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 17, 1912.
1,037,912, Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
WITNESSES: IIVI/E/V TOR 1 ATTORNEY FREDERICK HOWARD, OI DAYTON, OHIO.
- FILING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Kay 17, 1912. Serial No. 698,013.
Patented Sept. 10,1912.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Filing Devlces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in filing devices in which cards, documents, folders and kindred artlcles are maintained in order and in an upright position.
The object of my invention is to provide a filing receptacle, and an ad ustable follower to be used in connection therewith, which are simple in construction, easily operated and durable.
To this end my invention consists of a filing receptacle having longitudinal grooves provided in the top portions of its side members, which act as securing and guiding means for a follower which is longitudinally movable within the receptacle. This follower is provided with guiding members or arms which move in the grooves referred to, and with lower side extensions which press against the side members to brace the follower in its different posit-ions. The follower may be easily moved to different relative positions within the receptacle, to accommodate cards, documents and kindred articles of varying sizes and quantities.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved filing receptacle and follower. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the receptacle taken through the line aa of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the follower.
Throughout the specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
In a detailed description of my invention, 1 designates a filing receptacle or drawer which may be constructed of metal, wood or other suitable material. Longitudinally movable within the receptacle 1 is a follower 2, preferably constructed of metal, but which may be made of wood or heavy cardboard.
3 3 designate the side members of the receptacle 1, which are providedwith longitudinal grooves 4 4 in their top portions.
The follower 2 is so cut or stamped from the material of which it is constructed, as to provide at each of its upper side edges, laterally projecting arms 5 5. These arms 5 5 terminate in enlarged portions or extensions 6 6 which are turned at right angles to the follower 2 and project downwardly a suflicient distance to fit in the grooves 4 4 of the side members 3 3. These grooves are of sufiicient width and depth to permit of a free longitudinal movement of the extensions 6 6 therein. These extensions 6 6, through their engagement in the grooves 4 4, act as gulding'means for the follower in its longitudinal movement in the receptacle,
and as securing means for said follower in any of its different positions.
The follower 2 is provided at its lower side edges with integral flap portions 7 7, which are turned or bent at right angles to the follower and in an opposite direction to the arms 5 5. When the follower is placed within the receptacle 1, these flap portions press slightly against the interior surfaces of the side members 3 3 to brace the follower in any of its different positions.
My filing device is extremely simple in construction and may be easily operated.
The cards or other articles to be filed are,
placed within the receptacle either in front or behind the follower 2, which is then moved toward them to compress or hold them in an upright position. The follower is securely held in its adjusted position through the engagement of its arm extensions 6 6 in the grooves 4 4, and the contact of its flap portions 7 7 with the side members 3 3. 5
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination, a filing receptacle, a follower longitudinally movable therein, longitudinal grooves being provided in the top portions of the side members of said receptacle, arms carried by said follower engaging in said grooves, and means carried by the lower portion of said follower, adapted to press against the side members of the receptacle to firmly brace the follower in its difl'erefit positions therein, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a filing receptacle, a follower longitudinally movable therein,
longitudinal grooves being provided in the top portions of the side members of said rece tacle, outwardly-extending and downwar ly-projecting arms carried by said follower engaging in said grooves, and fla portions carried by the lower sides of sai follower, said flap portions extending at right angles to the follower and adapted to press against the side members of the receptacle to firmly brace the follower in its different positions therein, substantially as described. 10 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handthis 15th day of May, 1912.
