ROLLO M. vIOK, E DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AssIeiiOn, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE lVIcCASKEY REGISTER COMPANY, (INCORPORATED IN 1914, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, A
CORPORATION or OHIO.
Application filed June 29, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROLLO M. VIon, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and relating to Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a filing appliance or card index.
For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of filing appliance embodying my invention.
Figure l is a longitudinal section through a drawer or holder showing a series of cards and a follower embodying my invention mounted therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the follower. Fig. is an inverted Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line passing through one of its supporting legs. Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate a slightly modified form of the invention, Fig. 5 being a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view and Fig. 6 a fragmentary perspective of the drawer or holder.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a support or It preferably comprises a drawer having a bottom 1, sides 1 (only one side being shown) a front wall 1 and a rearwall 1 1 indicates a suitable handle carried by the front wall 1.
2 indicates the cards or papers which are to be filed in the holder 1, one behind the other, and arranged on their lower edges, as is customary in keeping records of any kind by a card system. The cards 2 may include suitable index, division or title carrying cards, such as may be foundnecessary in the system.
3 indicates a follower mounted in the holder. It is movable or adjustable from end to end thereof in either direction to accommodate itself to the number of cards in the holder, or the increase or decrease in number thereof from time to time. The fol lower 3 comprises two members 3", 3", the member .3 serving to carry a portion of the cards and interposed between them and the bottom 1 of the holder, and member 3 operating as the back, abutment or rest for the rearmost card 2-a1id supporting it in an approximately vertical position. As is well understood, by supporting the rear card in specification of Letters Patent.

this manner, all the cards in front of it are similarly supported. Preferably, the two members 3, 3 are formed integrally from a section of sheet metal which is bent along a transverse line 3 to place said members at the proper angles relative to each other.
3,'3 indicate a pair of legs Or supports for the rear end of the member 3 These legs are preferably arranged near the opposite longitudinal sides of the follower. The lower or free ends of the legs may be sharpened or pointed, as shown at 3 in Order that, under the influence of the weight of the cards 2, they will slightly penetrate the surface of the bottom l at all positions of adjustment. As a result of this operation, the follower will be prevented from slipping or moving in either direction, without first slightly raising it or at least relieving it of the weight thereon, and will be held in any place in which it is positioned.
As shown in the drawings, the card carrying member 3 rests at its forward transverse edge upon the bottom l and is supported at its rear end by the legs 3 Since the member 3 is comparatively long, a considerable number of cards are carried thereby, the weight of which cards operate effectively to cause sufficient friction between the legs 3 and bottom 1 to prevent'movement of the follower.
When the members 3 3 are formed from sheet metal, I prefer to slit the metal on converging lines 3 and 3, and to bend the slitted portions backwardly slightly, as shown, to form the legs 3 The upper transverse edge of the back 8* is preferably turned over or doubled on itself, as shown at 3. This construction servesto strengthen the upper end of the back transversely and also to form a smooth edge for the hands to engage with. f
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention. Referring to these figures 1 indicates the drawer or holder having a bottom 1*. 3indicates thefollower, which is mounted in the holder. 4 indicates friction increasing means mounted on or formed in the bottom 1 and arranged in position to be engaged by the ends of the legs 3 The friction increasing means preferably comprise a series of serrations or teeth 4? which may be formed by cutting out short, transverse V-shaped grooves in the bottom 1; There is a series of serrations for each leg 3 and said series extends substantially from end to end of the drawer bottom. As will be apparent from the drawings, the legs 8 are adapted to lie in alined grooves formed between two teeth 4: in each series and will thus be held against forward or rearward sliding movement.
To those skilled in the art of making filing appliances of the classdescribed, many alterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to. be in any sense limiting.
What I claim is l. The combination with a support, of a follower arranged to rest on the support and adapted to support cards and similar articles thereon, and a leg carried by the follower and bearing on the support, the lower end of said leg being pointed and arranged to penetrate the surface of the support to prevent movement thereon whenever the follower may be positioned.
2. The combination with a support or holder, of a follower comprising a card carrying member having its forward or front edge adapted to rest on said support, a back fixed to said member for supporting cards in a substantially vertical position, and a leg I for supporting the rear end of said card carrying member, the lower end of the leg being sharpened or pointed, whereby the weight of the cards carried by the card carrying member causes the leg to penetrate the surface of the support to prevent move ment of the follower.
3. The combination with a support, and a series of cards mounted therein, of a follower for said cards comprising a cardcarrying member on which a portion of said cards are supported, a back for supporting the cards in substantially a vertical position, and a pair of legs for supporting the follower at one end, the legs terminating in sharpened ends whereby they penetrate the surface of the support and prevent movement of the follower therealong.
4:. A follower for a filing appliance formed from sheet-metal, the metal being bent on a transverse line to form a card carrying member arranged to support a series of cards, anda back against which the rear card of the series rests, in combination with supporting devices having pointed ends arrangedto penetrate the surface of a support under the weight of the cards on the card-carrying member to prevent movement of the follower.
5. Afollower fora filing appliance formed from sheet metal, the metal being bent on a transverse, line to form a card carrying member arranged to support a series of cards, and a back against which the rear card of the series rests, and the metal being slitted to provide a pair of legs which support the card-carrying member at one end, the ends of the legs being pointed, whereby they penetrate'the surface of a support and prevent movement of the follower.
6. The combination of a support provided with a plurality of roughened surfaces eX- tending longitudinally thereof, a follower movable on the support and comprising an angle plate, one member thereof serving to support a series of cards and the other member thereof operating as. a back for the cards, and spaced legs on which the card carrying member of the follower is supported arranged to ,aline with said roughened surfaces, the lower ends of said legs being pointed and engaging said roughened surfaces to prevent movement of the follower along saidsupport. I
7. The combination with a holder, of a combined follower and support comprising a member on which cards or papers are supported and a back against which the rearlnost card or paper rests, and friction increasing means between said combined follower and support and the bottom. of the holder, operating under the weight of the.
cards or papers to slightly penetrate the surface of the bottom and prevent movement of the said combined follower and support.
8. The combination with a holder, of a device for supporting on their edges aseries of cards or papers in said holder, said device having a member on which the rearmost cards or papers of the series are sup-' ported and supporting devices havingv their lower ends pointed and arranged to penetrate the surface of the bottom of the holder toprevent movement of the card supporting i device relative to the holder.
9. A follower formed from a section .of sheet metal and comprising a bottom member on which cards or papersare supported N and a back for said cards extending upwardly from the rear edge of said bottom member, and a member for supporting said back, the said supportingjmember being connected with said back and arranged to support the bottom at an' angle when the follower is mounted on asupport.v
In testimony whereof afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
