drawers, particularly such articles as papers and documents, are displaced from drawers andlost within the waste spaces of the cabinet. This occurs most easily when the drawcr is full of papers, sothat tlie'natural elasticity of the pile of paper carries theuppermost one against the surfaces next above the drawer. If these surfaces are the top of the deck or the bottom of a superposed drawer, it may easily happen that the friction of the paper against the surface drags it out of the drawer in the course of opening of the drawer, and it falls down into spaces at the back and is thereby lost or misplaced.

lifly invention provides a drawer guard, adapted to cooperate witha drawer to prevent the occurrence of such mischance. It comprisesa guard plate, preferably of sheet metal, or of wire, pivoted within the drawer, and provided in some embodiments with a spring to raise it to an elevated position where it will be out of the way as much as possible.

Referring tothe drawings, a desk consist ing of a top member 1, upright members 2, and panel members 3 may be provided with drawers 4 and 5. Within the drawers, the guard member of my invention may desirably be positioned.

The guardmember 6 is desirably formed of sheet metal as shown in Fig. 3 and may 1 consist of a flat portion .aszshown, with end members are desirably bent along the lines 9 so that they assume positions parallel to each other, and at right angles to the fiat por tion. The length of the flat portion or, cross member is desirably adpisted to be substantially that of the inside width of the drawer,

and appropriate pivots, which maybe wood screws 11, are provided, passingthrough the pivot holes 8 into wood of the sides of the drawers.v Slots 12 and stops 14, which may also be wood screws may be provided to limit theupward and downward motion of the guard. A spring 15 may desirably be pro-v vided to hold the guard in appropriate operative position;

The guard members may vary in number ace rding to the requirements imposed. A gi'iard 6 is desirably provided at the rear of the drawer, and equipped with spring 15 and stop members 12 and M as indicated.

and accordingly no crevice is left'through which papers can pass and be lost. A second similar guard may desirably be provided at the front end of "the drawer, if it is antici- Jated that large numbers of papers will be stored therein.

The rear guard 6 isalso adapted to perform the additional function ofv a stop, to preveir ward distance, so that there is no dangerof falling out with its contents, and that no undue strains are imposed upon the furniture by. lever effect of the unsupported portion of the drawer when fully opened.

In the operation of my device, the papers may be passed backward into the drawer-and under the rear guard 6. In combination, a cabinet, a drawer therein and a guard therefor comprising a transverse sheet metal strip pivoted to the rear part of thedrawer with its free edge in proximity to the surfaceabove the drawer, said the latter being pivoted tothe side walls of the drawer adjacent the end thereof,.the di mension of said transverse member in the direction of the length of the drawer being slight drawer.
