Description

March 29, 1932. D. RAPPAPORT TELEPHONE ATTACHMENT Filed May 7, 1928 Patented Mar. 29, 1932 UNITED STATES.
PATENTl OFFICE DARIO RAIPPAPORT,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY 'MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO
TRANSAMERICA'PRODUCTS C0., INC.
'TELEPHONE ATTACHMENT Application mea May 7, 1928. serial No. 275,847.
This invention relates to contrivances attachable to instruments used for entry of .telephone numbers and other memoranda.
The hitherto used means of this character are in form of pendants to hang freely from the mouthpiece of the instrument and each consists of a card board back to which are attached by loose leaf fasteners a number of alphabetical index cards with intermediate cards for entering names and telephone numbers of different parties. Such pendants have been objectionable, first, because of the inconvenience to handle them while the instru-v ment is in use, then because they easily slip off the instrument and also because they are suitable only for instruments of American type, but not 'for those of the French type.
The object of this invention is to provide a device which can be readily attached to any type of telephone, that will be convenient to handle when the instrument is in use and can be concealed when not in use.
It also has for its object to provide simple means for the removable attachment of the device to the instrument without changing the construction of the latter.
With these and other objects in view my inventionconsists in the novel combination, construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the base portion of a telephone instrument and of my new contrivance attached hereto; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 3 of the contrivance; Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof and Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a sectional top plan and elevation of a modified form of construction.
B denotes the circular base of an ordinary telephone instrument. My devi-ce comprises a substantially box-shaped support 10 open on top and at its front and provided with three or more somewhat resilient arms 11 which extend from the sides of the walls of said box shaped support at suitably spaced intervals and are bent at their free ends to form clamps 11a adapted to snap around the circumferential edge of said` base B and thereby hold said support suspended below the base of the instrument. This box may contain a drawer in which the memorandum pad is suitably attached, or, as shown, the
ottom 12 of said box may be made movable longitudinally. To this end its longitudinal edges are guided in lateral grooves 10a of thel sidewalls and are provided at their rear ends with lugs 12 which in cooperation with lugs 10b midway of the side walls of the box will form stops limiting the extentA of the outward on this bottom is the back 13 of the loose leaf pad preferably made of sheet metal. This back 13 is provided with downwardly project-ing guide members 13L formed by punchingl or otherwise and which engage longituzdinal slots 12b formed in the bottom 12. Fastened to this back 13 by loose leaf fastening means 14 or the like area plurality of cards 15 as usual. The back 13 may be provided at its front end with an upstanding wall 13*a formed with a grasp 13.
The pad formed bythe cards 14 and back 13 is so admeasured that when the drawer or bottom 12 of the box is retracted it will be confined inthe space below the base B of fthe instrument. In this position the upstanding wall 13b of the back 13 will abut close against the front ends of the side walls of the box, 10. lVhen the pad is to be used the same is withdrawn until the bottom abuts with its vlugs 12 against the stops 10b. The pad 13, lwill extend beyond the front end of the bottom and be supported thereon so that thecards can be freely turned on their loose leaflfas- -teners 14 from right to left as shown,Y or otherwise. Y
The aforedescribed construction facilitates the handling of the device While the instrulment is in use.
thereon horizontally. When not in use the pad is swung to be concealed between the supmovement of said bottom. Slidably mounted port and said base B of the instrument. It is clear that various other modifications may be made without departing from the principle of myinvention. I, therefore, do 5 not wlsh to conne myself to the detalls shown and described. j
Whatl claim is: Y y 1. In a de'vice of the character described, a support adapted to be attached to the base 1 of a telephone instrument, a withdrawable member on said su port, a slidable withdrawable second member guidedly mounted, in longitudinal grooves in said first named member and a memorandum pad mounted on said slidable member. f
2. In a device of the character described, a support having clamping members adapted to engage around the base of a telephone, an open front drawer movably mounted on .2 said sup ort, a slidable withdrawable member gui edly mounted in longitudinal slots in the bottom of said drawer and adapted to slide out through the front thereof and a memorandum pad mounted on said slidable member.
3. In a device of the character described, a support having clamping members adapted to engage around the base of a telephone, anl open front drawer movably mounted on said 3 support, a slidable withdrawable member mounted in said drawer and having downwardly projecting guide members, longitudinal slots in said drawer in which said guide members are ada ted to engage for controlling and guiding the movement of said slidable member through the open front of said drawer and a memorandum p ad mounted on said slidable members.
4. A device for mounting a telephone index to the base of a telephone instrument comprising a box shaped support open at its top and at its front, c amping means attached to said support for engaging said base, a withdrawab e bottom for said support, said bottom being guided in the side walls of said support, lug members formed at the rear of said bottom and adapted to engage lug members on said side walls for limiting the withdrawal of said bottom from said support, a slidable member mounted on said bottom provided with downwardly projecting lug members for engagement 1n suitable slots formed in said bottom and means for fastening index sheets to said slidable member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
