ApplicationDecember 11, 1946, Serial No. 715,461
4 Claims.
My invention relates to adjustab1e partitions which may be applied to any enclosure where a separation of articles or commodities is desired.
An object of my invention is to provide partitions that are slidably adjustable longitudinally as well as laterally.
Another object of my invention is to provide a sliding adjustable center partition which acts as a means for assisting and supporting laterally disposed partitions, disposed at right angle thereto.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable base structure for the support of the laterally disposed adjustable partitions.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that permits adjustment of the lateral partitions in a manner that will place them in opposite relation, or in staggered relation to one another.
It is manifest to anyone familiar with the art that it is quite frequently desirable to separate articles in desk drawers, refrigerator units or files, and the device described would permita single unit to be adaptable to various sized cornpartments or enclosures` due to its adjustable feature.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds and when taken in conjunction with the drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan View of the assembled device showing the arrangement of the end plates, the adjustable base, the center partition, and a plurality of outwardly disposed partition members.
Figure 2 is a front View of the device taken from the line 2-2 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the device taken at the line 3-3 in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the base channel construction illustrating the partition slots and the adjustable arrangement of the base.
Figure 5 is a similar view of a modified construction of the base consisting of semi-radial sections instead of the rectangular sections shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion oi the assembly showing the laterally disposed partitions supported by the center partition.
Figure 'I is a fragmentary perspective view of a lateral partition supported by the base.
Figure 8 is an assembly drawing of a lateral partition, and
Figure 9 is a cross-section of a lateral partition as applied to the base.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views and referring now to the same, the characters I0 and I0 show base sections in the form of channels telescopically engaging one another, There is a center section consisting of a single plate portion I I and a channel portion I I', and this center section is attached to end plates |12 and I2 by means of rivets shown as I5 or in any other manner.
There are a plurality of 1atera11y disposed partition members consisting of a channel portion shown as I3 and a single plate portion shown as I4. This single portion I4 is provided with an outwardly extending hook member I6 extending outward from the top thereof and this hook member I 6 engages the upper edge of the center section I I or I I'. The section I3 of the lateral partition is shown channeled at the points I'I and I1 to permit the single portion I4 to engage these channels. The lateral partition portion I3 is provided with a groove I8 at the bottom. This groove I8 is arranged so as to enable it to engage the slots I9 in the base sections I0 and Ill as shown in Figure 7. Obviously, the slots I9 in the base portion I0 and I0 must be extended to a position where they register with one another so that the lower end of the partition member I3 engages the slot I9 and these slots are of a Width to accommodate the thickness of the sheet constituting the lateral partition member I3.
In Figures 4 and 5, I show a construction of the base sections l0 and I0', Figure 4 shows a rectangular portion while Figure 5 shows a semiradial portion, both constructed in a manner so that they telescope with one another to allow for longitudinal adjustment of the entire device, and as the section I0 engages telescopically the section I0 of the base section, the section I I will telescopically engage the center section II as the end plates I2 and I2' are brought together or extended from one another.
The slot 2U in the end plates I2 and I2 permit movement of the base sections I0 and I0' and as the base sections are brought together or extended outwardly from one another Within the slot 2|] they will slidably adjust the lateral partitions consisting of the single portion I4 and the channel portion I3.
It is also manifest to anyone familiarI with the art that the partitions may be numbered or a conventional holder shown as 2l may be attached to any convenient portion of the lateral partition so that an identication card may be disposed therein.
Obviously, the device may be extended longitudinally or laterally to fit the particular enclosure or receptacle in which it is to be used, and even though I have shown but a single construction I am fully cognizant of the fact that many changes in the form and coniiguration ci the component parts may be made without in any Way aiecting their operativeness, and I reserve the right to make such changes as I may deem necessary or convenient without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope ci the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in ,the United States is:
1. An article of manufacture comprising in combination pairs of spaced telescopically engaging horizontal base channels, said channels provided with spaced slots at their upper face, a pair of vertical end plates, a vertical center section comprising two members telescoped together, said center section attached to said end plates, and a plurality of vertical lateral partitions comprising two members telescoped together and engaged withthe slots in said base channels and having means engaging the vertical center section.
2. A device of the character described comprising in combination pairs of spaced horizontal base channels, said channels consisting of two sections each telescopically engaging the other and provided with spaced slots through their top portion, a pair of vertical end plates, a center section vertically disposed and constructed of sections telescopically connected to one another, said center section attached to said vertical end plates, a plurality of lateral partitions consisting of sections telescopically connected to one another, said lateral partitions engaged with the slots in said base channels and having means supported one another and provided with spaced slots disposed within the upper portion of said base channels, a pair of vertical end plates, said end plates engaged With the slots in said base channels, a vertical center section, said center section consisting of a plurality of parts telescopically connected to one another, said vertical center section attached to said vertical end plates, a plurality ofl lateral partitions constructed of sections telescopically connected to one another, said lateral partitions extending vertically and engaging the slots in said base channels, means on one section of said lateral partition for engaging the center section, thereby forming a support for said lateral partition.
4. An adjustable partition of the character described comprising in combination pairs of spaced .base channels, said base channels comprising a plurality of sections telescopically connected to one another, a pair of end plates, said end plates engaging the slots in said base channels, slots disposed in the bottom of said end plates to permit the movement of said channels toward and away from one another, a vertical center section consisting of a plurality of members telescopically connected to one another, said vertical center section connected to said end plates and disposed at right angle thereto, a plurality of lateral partitions disposed in a vertical manner and consisting of a plurality of vertical sections telescopically connected to one another, said lateral partitions provided with a slot at the bottom for the accommodation of said base channels and means on said lateral partitions for engagement with said center section, thereby supporting said lateral partitions by means of said center section, and the slots within said base channel.
