FILE RACK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patpgnped ltlay 9, 1922,
Application filed March 14, 1921. Serial No. 452,192.
To all 4127mm it may concern.
Be it known that I, EUGENE PEARL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File Racks, of which the following is a specification. I
The principal purposeof this invention is to produce a file for miscellaneous papers, holding the same in a readily accessible, substantially vertical position and in such group relation as may be preferred.
A further object is to provide a compartment file having adjustable means for expansion in accordance with the bulk of papers to be disposed therein, the compartment walls being either vertical or inclined to the front or rear as desired, changes and adjustments being instantly made without disturbing the remaining partitions or spacing members and with the fingers only.
These and other objects, such as simplicity and cheapness of construction, durability and convenience in use. and economy in space required, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material. part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the partitions used in connection with the Figure 2 is a similar perspective view of the base element thereof.
Figure 3 is a like view showing the base side guard angles.
Figure 4 is a perspective view'of an auxiliary element engageable with the main base, and side plate.
eFigure 5 is a similar view showing the base connecting device.
- Figure 6 is a. fragmentary transverse sectional view taken through the base and partitions.
.Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the complete assemblage of the file.
Stated in general terms the apparatus consists of a plurality of grooved base plates having means in the grooves for adjustably receiving and frictionally confining metal partition plates, the latter being bent along one longitudinal edge so that they will stand inclined, either to the front or rear, according to the manner in which the bent edge is disposed, or vertically, if the straight edge be inserted.
Guide tabs, either single or in strips, bearing designating characters, are removably engaged at the side edge to'identify the material filed between the partitions and the structure is capable of being expanded as indicated.
The smallspa'ce required, its portability and convenience in assorting, classifying and containing documents and articles of like nature, and efficiency for practical purposes will become evident as the description proceeds.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates an essentially rectangular base block of approved thickness, the same being preferably made of wood, polished or enamelled to suit the taste and provided on its under side with strips'or pads of felt 11 acting as cushions to prevent abrasion of the surface upon which the file may rest. I I
The upper surface of the base contains a series of transverse, parallel slots or channels 12 extending approximately to half its thickness from side to side and uniformly spaced apart.
' Strips of felt 14 are secured by cement or other suitable adhesive over the face of the base, the same extending longitudinally from'end to end adjacent the sides, these strips being depressed to form linings 15 for the channels 12 and are caused to adhere.
erect as indicated in Fig. 6, and it is to be understood that whichever. edge of the plates are entered, they are frictionally held by contact with the linings 15 disposed in the grooves. although easily adjustable or removable therefrom at will.
A strip 20, bearing numerals or other distinguishing characters 21 is attached to one of the side edges of the base 10, by angular may be entered from the end and adjusted as desired, see Fig. 7. 1 If it be needed to increase the scope an capacity of the file, sectionalbases may be connected to the frontor rear edge of the main base, each section being made in a similar manner with cushion pads 11, grooves 12 and felt strips 14;, the sections being engaged together or to the main base by channel shaped clips 25 their side members 26 neatly fitting the slots 12 and 12, one of these connections being used -midway between the felt strips as shown.
I It will be apparent that the angle clips 22 and 23'Inay also be extended across the ends of the supplementary elements if desired.
In addition to the partition plates 16, end plates 28 may be used, the same entering grooves 29', as shown in Fig. 1, transversely of the auxiliary bases, or longitudinally of the main bases, whereby papers are prevented from lateral displacement. I
In. order to make the file more fully complete, certain of the partition plates 16, as used on the ends, may be provided with spring clips 30, the same being merelystrips ofresilient metal, bent in the manner shown, the lowerstraight portions being engaged in loops 31 formed by shearing the plates 16 and pressing outward. 1
This feature enables small articles, as cards, envelopes, etc, to be conspicuously held in a convenient manner where they are readily observable.
Theoperation of the file ismanifest from the foregoing description, being clearly apparent to persons having to do with like structure. V
The dlsclosure is to be regarded as descriptive only and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many minor modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and hereafter claimed.
,Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I V -1 1. A file comprising .a base block having cushion pads on its lower surface and 0011-.
taining a plurality of spaced transverse grooves extending entirely across its level edges, their straight or bent edges being suited to enter the mentioned grooves.
2. A file comprising a level rectangular Wooden base block provided with a series of vertical grooves extending across its upper face, reversible partition plates engageable in the grooves, and means formed with said plates whereby they maybe held rigidly erect or inclined in either direction depending upon their position. 7 7
A file comprising a flat base having a plurality of parallel spaced grooves, fabric strips dispersed over said base forming a liningv for the grooves, partition plates fric tionally held by said lining in the grooves, and means formed with said plates whereby they may be held erect or inclined.
a. A file comprising a flatbase block having a plurality of parallel spaced grooves, extending from one side to the other, felt partition plates fitting said linings along their entered edges, and means formed with said plates permitting them to be held in an inclined posit-ion. r
5. A file comprising a fiat base having a plurality of parallel spaced grooves, plates linings disposed at intervals in the grooves,
suited to the grooves, friction elements inter- Y vening said plates and grooves, and means permlttlng sa d plates to stand erect or at an inclination forward or rearward- V 6. A file comprising a flat sectlonal base having grooves, a plurality of reversible para plurality of transverse grooves extending across its upper surface, 1 partition plates freely engageable in the grooves sald plates each having an angular edge, an auxiliary base also grooved for the reception of like partition plates, and a channel shapedconnecting element engageable in the outer grooves of both bases whereby .theyare held I as a unit and re-enforcing elementsrat the ends of said bases. r
In testimony whereof l have' signed my name to this specification.
EUGENE PEARL.
