Description

P. R. VOGEL CARDHOLDER Filed OCL. l0, 1946 Patented Nov. 28, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARDHOLDER Paul R. Vogel, Chicago, Ill.
Application October 10, 1946, Serial No. 702,469
(Cl. 40-l24) 3 lClaims.
This invention relates to' card holders, and more' particularly to a device adapted to hold greeting cards or photographs in a manner suitable for display purposes. The invention is an improvement on the device shown in my prior U. S. Patent No. 1,769,610, dated July 1, 1930.
One object of the invention is to provide a card holder whereby cards of various sizes may be mounted for display purposes. The cards are easily and quickly mounted and demounted, and they are held to the holder in a secure and neat manner.
Another object is to provide a card holder whereby cards of the same or various sizes may be mounted on either or both sides of the holder. In particular, cards of the same size may be mounted back to back on opposite sides of the holder, that is, the cards may occupy exactly the si'rie area on opposite sides of the holdei'. This feature makes it possible for a plurality of ho1d ers to be mounted in album form and permits utilization of al1 available mounting space.
Still another object of the invention is `to provide a holder whereby the cards may be attached through overlapping ap action on any or all of the card edges. Accordingly, cards may be mounted so as to be held with equal rmness along all four edges, top, bottom, right and left, thereby providing ideal support.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein various forms of the invention are shown. It is to be understood that the description and drawing are illustrative only, and that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plane View of a card holder embodying the invention, and showing cards mounted on the holder;
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line 2 2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 4 is a plane View of a portion of a card holder utilizing a modication of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing, the improved card holder consists generally of a sheet B of compare. tively stir material such as cardboard. Sheet E may of any suitable size and generally is of such size as to be conveniently mounted as one page of an album.
Sheet 5 is provided with a plurality of separate slits i and 8. Each slit (as exemplined by slits l' and 8) follows in general the outline of a modified W. Accordingly, each slit denes in sheet 6 a group of three flaps, 9, I?) and Il, Whichai bendable out lof the plane of the sheet on either side of the sheet. As will be seen, ilaps i) and II extend or face in me same direction, while intermediate nap Ill faces in the opposite direction.
Slit l is arranged in a row with additional slits i3, i4, i5 and I6, the space between adjacent slits in the row being somewhat less than the length of any o'fiie of the defined ilaps, j
Similarly slit S is arranged in a row of like slits spaced somewhat apart from the first described ivv. It will be understood that the number" of such rows will depend upon the desired size of sheet e. u
Another row of separate slits, exempliiied by `sli-t l is disposed intermediate the iirst two: rows.
The slits of the intermediate ro-W may have the saine coriiiguiation as the others, and they are preferably reversed in direction: That is, dans I9 and in delined by slit I8, face in a4 direction opposite to flaps 9 and I I defined by slit l, while interiediate nap 2| faces in the direction opporsite to corresponding intermediate flap Ill. thermore, the row of slits including slit I8 is staggered with respect to its adjacent rows, that is, the lengths `'of the flaps in the intermediate row lie generally opposite the spaces between slits in the adjacent rows. This staggered arrangement, cf course, insures that cards of all sizes may be accommodated by the holder, and also 'that the stiffness of sheet 6 is not unduly lessened.
On the left side of sheet are shown separate slits 2'2, 23 and 24. These slits are oriented at right angles to the previously described slits, each slit thereby providing groups oi three flaps similarly oriented, The right side of sheet `ii is provided with oppositely directed separate slits. 2G, 21 and 2%. Preferably, alternate slits in ea'ch of these rows are staggered with respect to adjacent slits, thereby providing iiaps to accommodate cards of various dimensions.
A card 3d is shown mounted in plosition on the visible face of sheet 5. Flaps Si and I I of slit 'I and the corresponding flaps oi slit 8 have been bent outwardly, and the top edge of card Si! has been inserted beneath the flaps. The intermediate flap` of slit iii and its counterpart in the corresponding other r w overlap and secure the bottorn edge of the card. The outer two flaps of side slit 23 overlap and hold the left edge oi card 3U, While the outer two naps of slit 2l hold the right card edge.
As will be seen, the arrangement of flaps 'on card is such as to accommodate cards o size, within the limits, of course, of sheet 6. Since several cards may be mounted on a single sheet, substantial spa'ce economy is effected.
A second card 3l is shown in dotted lines as being mounted on the reverse face of sheet 6. It is apparent that flaps are available for so mounting a card of any size on the reverse face. In fact, it will be seen that a card of exactly the same size as card 39 could be mounted on the reverse face to occupy a space exactly coextensive with that occupied by card 39. That type of mounting would be accomplished by bending a flap such as flap 9, out of the plane of sheet 6 on one side, and its companion flap H out of the plane of the sheet on the opposite side. This procedure could be followed with suicient of the flap groups to provide flap action on all edges of the reverse card.
The modification shown in Fig. 4 embodies generally the same invention as shown in Figs. 1-3. The modification utilizes, as shown, a sheet 34 containing spaced rows of separate slits 35 and 39. Slit 35 is substantially W-shaped so as to provide outer flaps 37 and 38 extending inthe same direction, and intermediate iiap 39 extending in the opposite direction.
A third row of separate slits 4l is disposed intermediate the rows containing slits 3S and 3E. Slits 9| are substantially V-shaped, and each slit 4l defines a flap 42 which faces in the same direction as ap 39. It will be noted that aps 92 may be somewhat shorter in length and spaced closer together than aps 39 whereby aps 42 are in general always staggered with respect to flaps 39. This feature, of course, permits the accommodation of cards of all sizes.
Use of the card holder shown in Fig. 4 is selfexplanatory. It will be seen that cards of various sizes likewise may be mounted on both sides of the sheet.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and advantages of this invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. Various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or losing the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A card holder comprising a sheet of stiff material having a plurality of separate, generally W-shaped slits therein, said slits each dening three flaps which are bendable out of the plane of said material on either side of said material, two of said flaps facing in one direction and the other flap facing in the opposite direction to comprise a flap group, said groups of three flaps being arranged in rows with the flaps of one row being staggered with respect to corresponding iiaps in adjacent rows whereby cards of the same or various sizes may be held by said flaps on either and both sides of said material, said iaps overlapping opposite card edges.
2. The card holder of claim 1 including additional rows of similar flap groups arranged in said material in areas laterally adjacent to some of said rows of flap groups, said similar ap groups being oriented at right angles to the first flap groups and being staggered with respect to each other whereby to hold cards by overlapping the opposite card edges not overlapped by flaps of said rst flap groups.
3. The card holder of claim 1 wherein the corresponding flaps in adjacent rows are oriented in opposite directions.
PAUL R. VOGEL.
