ORDER-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,169, dated June 17, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. BROWN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Order-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the construction of what are known among stationers as orto der-holders, the same being portfolios adapted to hold written orders for merchandise and be used by the clerk who puts up the goods for shipment or delivery while he is engaged in that duty. A patent already granted to me, numbered 409,827, and dated August 27, 1889, shows another construction of these holders from that I now seek to patent, and will serve to give a general idea of the class of devices to which the invention relates.

In the accompanying drawings, I show at Figure 1 a plan, and at Fig. 2 an edge View, of my newly-devised holder. Fig. 3 is a partial edge View upon an enlarged scale. Fig. I is a partial edge view showing the manner in which the holder is opened when orders are to be inserted or taken out. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are detail views of one of the narrow boards embodied in the holder.

My holder consists of two wide boards or 0 covers A A, two narrow boards B B, united to the covers A by flexible joints at a, andsprings C C, acting as clamps upon the narrow boards, and also serving to hold said boards together, thereby dispensing with the 5 hinge heretofore usually employed to unite said boards. I also combine with the parts above mentioned a fulcrum-wire D, whose function is to serve as a fulcrum when the clamp is to be opened, and also to confine the spring-clamps upon the boards.

The springs C have their side edges turned down, as shown at c, and such turned-down edges engage with the offset portions 1), provided upon each of the narrow boards at that portion'of such boards which lies under the springs. This engagement by the lips c and offset 1) prevents any slipping of the springs backward, and they are held against slipping longitudinally by the end of the offset 1) in one direct-ion and by the fulcrum-wire in the other direction, the ends of the fulcrum-wire being hooked over and inserted in recesses d, formed in those sides of the narrow boards which come together.

It will be noticed that I use two short springs instead of a long one, as has heretofore been customary. My object in this is to attain strength and durability with a small amount of metal. There is a limit to the length of these flat springs, unless they be made of such thin metal as to render them impracticable for this use.

The fulcrum device is capable of being turned upon its hooked ends until its body portion lies against the outside of one of the short boards, when, by reversing the covers, as indicated at Fig. 4, and applying power to them, the clamping-springs will be opened sufficiently to allow the putting in or taking out of the papers for which the holder is designed.

Each of the covers A and accompanying short board B are covered with canvasin the usual manner, such canvas forming the hinge a. It will be noticed that the fulcrum-wire and the clamping-springs effectually protect the back corners of the holder, which are usually subjected to very severe wear and are apt to fray out and give way before other portions of the holder. The front corners may be covered with leather or metal 6, in the usual manner.

I claim 1. The combination, with the covers of an order-holder, of clamping-springs C, having their side edges turned inwardly to form lips c and engage with the boards to which they are applied, substantially as set forth.

2. In an order-holder, the combination of the covers A, narrow boards B, clamping- 9o springs C, having the inwardly-turned edges 0, said boards B having the offsets I) to engage with the spring-lips c, substantially as set forth.

3. In an order-holder, the short clampingsprings C, in combination with a fulcrumwire having its ends hooked over and confining said springs upon the holder, substantially as set forth.

4. In an order-holder having the boards B I00 Io tially as set forth.

6. In an order-holder, the clamping-springs 0, having inward lips c, engaging with the boards, in combination with the fulcrum-Wire having the bent-over ends, substantially as set forth.
