Book-annex.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 713,869, dated November 18, 1902.
Application filed January 22,1900. Serial No. 2,243. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. GALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Book-Indexes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of book-indexes; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved index for books such as are ordinarily employed for keeping records or accounts of various kinds, to so construct the same as to admit of the index being displayed in a convenient position for use and without utilizing additional leaves or space on the leaves of the book or record, and to produce other improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an inner face view of a portion of a book-cover having my improvement thereon, showing for convenience in illustration a portion of the index-retaining strip broken away; and Fig. 2 is a tranverse section of the outer edge portion of a book having my improvement, showing the index in its inner position.
Similar reference-numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I construct the inner face of one or both covers 1 of a book 2 with a depression such as is indicated at 3, this depression extending lengthwise between points near the ends of the book-cover and extending from the outer edge of said cover a desirable distance inward. Bridging the depression 3 longitudinally is an index-retaining bar or strip 4, the latter being adjacent to and parallel with the outer edge of the cover 1. Beneath this bridge or stop bar is adapted to be made to slide in the depression 3 an indexplate 5, the latter being formed of suitable material to impart the desired rigidity thereto and having its inner longitudinal edge provided with an upturned shoulder or flange 6, which limits the outward movement of said index-plate by contact with the inner edge of the bridge-bar 4. Upon the face of the index-plate 5 1 cause to be printed, stamped, or otherwise made to appear index-letters, groups of letters and figures, or other desired references to accounts and pages of the book, this printed matter being arranged on the outer portion of the index-plate, so that when the latter is turned to its outer position the matter thereon will be disclosed to view on the outer side of the bridge-bar. As shown in the drawing, however, I preferably produce this printed matter in duplicate, the same matter appearing on the inner half of the index-plate as that shown on the outer half, so that the inner columns may be read on the inner side of the bridge-bar when the index-plate is not drawn outward. It is obvious, however, that when the leaves of the book or that portion thereof are resting upon the cover and bridgebar the index-plate may be drawn outward in the manner shown in Fig. l and the matter thereon easily read Without lifting the pages from the cover of the book.
From the construction which I have sh own and described it will be seen that a simple and extremely convenient index attachment is provided for book-covers, which will obviate the necessity of employing pages or portions of the pages of the book for index matter. It is obvious that the construction above described may be employed in both the back and front boards or cover-leaves of the bOOk-OtSIllg, if desired.
Having now fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an index for books, the combination with a bookcover having a depression 3 leading through the outer edge of said cover and on the inner face thereof and a fixed bar 4 bridging said depression longitudinally, of an index-plate 5 having corresponding or duplicate index matter printed on its inner and outer portions, said index-plate adapted to fit and slide within said depression and beneath said bridge-bar and having an inner edge shoulder adapted to abut against said bridge-bar when said plate is pulled outward, substantially as specified.
JOHN T. GALE.
