v`S]g ecication of Letters Patent.
p Patented April 2,1907.
Application filed Aprily 9,1906. Serial No. 310,858.
To a/ZZ wtmn t may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST L. CUDEBEC, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dalton, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in books, and consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of the invention is to provide a book for the use of small retail merchants by means of which their accounts may be kept in an extremely simple manner without the use of an elaborate system of bookkeeping.
Another object of the invention is to provide a book or the like with means for holding a plurality of bills, papers, cards, or the like in an orderly manner, so that any particular paper or group of papers may be quickly and easily located.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paper or card holding device of this character of simple, strong, and durable construction, which will be compact and in the form of a book, so that it may be readily placed in a safe or the like.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved book, showing its top cover swung to its open position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the leaves of the book, showing another way in which the paper or card clips may be marked; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 in Fig. 3.
The embodiment of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings is in the form of an account-book or ledger adapted for the use of retail merchants who do a small business, and it is constructed of sheet metal; but it will be understood that it may be made of any other suitable material and may be adapted for various other uses.
The book 1, as shown, comprises front and back covers 2 3, between which are arranged two or more leaves 4. Each of the cover and leaf sections 2 3 4 is constructed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal, and they are foldably connected by means of hinges v5, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. Each ofthe outer or cover sections 2 3 has its edges folded or bent inwardly upon itself to form surrounding beads 6, which provide a depressed portion upon the inner face of said section for the reception of a sheet of paper, celluloid, or the like 7. The sheet or sheets 7 are ruled, as clearly shown in Fig. l, to provide an index for the accounts or groups of bills, papers, or the like clamped upon the leaves 4 of the book by means of spring-clips 8. Each of the leaves 4, which are similar in construction, has its edges bent inwardly upon itself, and its upper, lower, and outer edges are bent to form right-angularly-projecting flanges 9, which separate or space the leaves 4 apart. Each of the clips S upon one side of the leaf 4 is formed by one half of a strip of resilient metal, the other half of which forms a clip upon the other side of said leaf. This double clip is formed by inserting a strip of metal through an opening 10 in said leaf, then bending said strip upon itself at its center to form downwardly-extending portions 11, which engage the opposite faces of the leaf, and then doubling or bending the ends of said piece upon the portions 11 to provide upwardly-extending resilient arms 12. The upper portions or ends of these arms 12 spring inwardly against the leaf 4 to clamp bills, papers, cards, or the like inserted beneath them, and their extreme upper ends are bent over to receive and clamp index-tabs 13, which may bear numerals, as shown in Fig. 1, letters, as shown in Fig. 3, or any other suitable devices for designating the clips and for use in connection with the index-7, as will be readily understood.
Vhen the invention is to be used as an account-book or ledger for a retail merchant, his customers names are placed in alphabetical order upon the index 7, and each one or each account is given a number or designating sign or symbol which corresponds to that upon one of the spring-clips 8. The customers orders, bills, and other papers relating to his account are kept together beneath the clip bearing his number, so that they may be quickly referred to when necessary by turning to the index, learning his number, and then turning to the clip or IOO IIO
holder bearing such number. Vhen he buys a new bill of goods or when he pays something on account, the proper entries are used as a card rack or index and for various other purposes than the one above described, and it may be made of paper, cardboard, or any other suitable material. i; From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, use, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A book of the class described comprising hingedly-connected cover and leaf sections, spring-clips upon the opposite faces of said leaf-sections, and angularly-projecting spacing-flanges upon the edges of said leaf-sections, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
