GARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 16, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lno L. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Garters, of which the following description, in connection with the accomp'anying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My present invention is an improved elastic garter, particularly intended for use as .a hose supporter encircling the calf of the leg of the wearer. In garters of this type, it is particularly difficult to provide an elastic portion because the perspiration of the wearer quickly destroys the elasticity of the rubber, and consequently the garter is rendered useless before the other parts are worn out. In order to obviate this difficulty I have devised a garter which will have the leg-encircling portion of non-elastic material, and have provided a short portion of elastic material which latter can be renewed from time to time, if desired. It will be appreciated that only a slight elasticity is necessary in the actual use of such garters and therefore the short piece of rubber-like or other elastic band is sufficient, as by having such short elastic member capable of quick renewal, I provide a garter which has a relatively long life or wearability and in which the short elastic member is capable of renewal, and is inexpensive. In carrying out the invention, I propose to supply the garters with a set of these elastic renewable portions, preferably giving at least two such elastic portions with each garter, thus affording a double or .dupleX wearability, the wearer being enabled to detach and attach the elastic members by .anv suitable means. I also prefer to have each elastic member of double material, still further carrying out the duplex idea, and giving a double length of wear to each elastic portion supplied with the garter.
Referring to the drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention; Figure 1 is a perspective view of my garter; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional fragmentary view through the elastic band portions.
It will be readily understood that different forms, styles, grades, and colors of garters may be made which embody the in- ]Patented Apr. it), 191?.

vention, the important feature being the short detachable and duplex characteristics above freely outlined. As shown in the drawing my improved garter comprises a leg-encircling band 1 of suitable fabric which is of non-elastic material, said band being stitched to a pad 2 at one end and detachably secured to a similar pad 3 at its other end. Band 1 may have a usual adjustable buckle 1 carrying a hook member 5, adapted to engage and catch a stud 6 on a metallic collar 7, secured to a tab 8, which is stitched to the pad 3. Uniting pads 2 and 3 is a strap 9 running freely through a loop 10, carrying the stocking fastening clasp designated at 12 and including the usual eye 11 and stud 13 or any other desired stocking gripping clasp. In order to secure the desired elasticity in thisgarter, I provide a short strip of elastic or rubberlike band, connecting the detachable and attachable pads 2 and 3 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To this end I secure to each of the pads 2 and 3 buckles 1 1- and 15 respectively similar to the adjustable buckles already mentioned and each having a central cross-bar 16 by which the buckles are attached to the respective pads 2 and 3 by short loops of fabric, 17 and 18 respectively. These pads 2 and 3 constitute the end portions of the non-elastic leg-encircling memher, and perform the function also of carrying the buckles for the double elastic member 20, as well as to hold the loops for the stocking clasp. The frictional engagement of these pads also aids in retaining the garter in position when in use.
In the construction of the tab 8 and loop 18 for pad 3, these may be made as one piece or separate as desired. Adjustabl secured to the buckles 14 and 15, is a strip of elastic material preferably comprising an endless band, 20, having its ends 21 and 22 engaged by buckles 14 and 15 respectively, as shown in Fig. 2 and the central portion doubled. This band 20 is quickly attached through either or both buckles 14L and 15, may be moved and an additional one attached or may be reversed. A provision of the double band 20 insures an increased life to its elasticity because the outer band is protected from the perspiration of the wearer by the inner portion, and furthermore, the band can be reversed, if desired, bringing the outer portion into contact with the wearers leg and giving an interchange ability which will materially prolong the elhciency ol' the elastic band 20.
Further advantages of my improved garter are economy of manufacture, lightness, strength, the fact that no metal can touch the wearer,- and the detachable or attachable features, as Well as the automatic adjustability of the garter'to the wearer.
Having described my invention, u'hatl claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. As an article of manufacture, a garter comprising a non-resilient leg-eneircling member, a pad at each end of said member, a depending strip united to said pads, a stocking clasp carried by said strip and a reversible and detachable double elastic member adjustably secured to each pad at the ends of the non-elastic member, thereby providing; elasticity to the said member.
2. As an article of manufacture, a garter comprising a non-resilient leg-encircling member, a pad at each end of said member carrying engaging devices, a double strip depending from said pads and carrying a stocking clasp jointly and slidably thereon, a clasp on each 01" said pads and a reversible double elastic member adjust-ably secured to said clasps, in combination With means to detach the non-resilient member intermediate its ends. 7
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name te this specification, in the presence of two subscribing \vitne ses. V
