CUFF-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1916..
Application filed July 29, 1915, Serial No. 42,553. Renewed November a1, 1916. Serial No. 132,717.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STANIsLAw KIELAR,
county of Milwaukee and State of Nisconsm, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Fasteners, of.
which the following is a specification. j
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cuif fasteners.
An object of the present invention is to provide a fastener in which the cufi may be either formed integral with the end of a shirt sleeve or independent thereof and in which the cuff is securely held in closed folded position with liability of the same becoming loosened obviated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure for cufi's which eliminates the present usual construction of cuff link, there being provided a pocket or keeper adjacent each end of the cuff adapted for the reception of a movable fastener.
a longitudinally thereof and completely open With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in.
the appended Clalm.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one end of a cuff illustrating one of the keeper members for the fastener; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the fastener detached from the cuff, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of a cuif showing the cuff and fastener in closed and locked position.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is shown in Fig. 1 one end of the cuff 11 having secured thereto a keeper or pocket strip 12 extending at each end, the same being secured to the cuff as by suitably positioned rows of stitching 13, it being noted that. the central portion of the keeper 12 is bulged or elevated from the cuff 11 to provide a clearance for the fastening member. The keeper 12 may be formed of any suitable material but is preferably formed of material from which the cuff or shirt is made, although celluloid or similar material could be utilized. As shown in Fig. 3, a keeper is provided adjacent each end of the cuff and has associated therewith a removable fastener to be presently described.
The form of fastening member is more clearly shown'in Fig. 2 and includes a pair of identically formed ends 18 of superposed material that may inclose a whalebone or other stiffening element 18 if desired, and is provided with a freely flexible central portion 19 while the ends thereof are turned over as at 20 to provide enlargements or lugs.
In the operation of the device, the ends 18 of the fastening member are inserted in the I keepers 12 while the lugs 20 pass through the keepers and extend beyond the edges thereof, and as shown in Fig. 3, the said lugs are adapted to prevent accidental displacement of the fastening member relative to the keepers 12.
, While the form ofthe invention herein shown and described is wliat is believed to be a preferable embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to beunderstood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
What I claim as new is 'A device of the class described, comprising in combination with a cuff, a pair of pockets secured to the same face of the cuff adjacent each end thereof and open from end to end, a fastening member including stiffened end portions and a flexible central portion adapted to have the stiffened end portions received in the pockets, and lugs carried bythe free ends of the fastening member adapted to slightly project beyond the inner ends of the pockets.
. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
'STANISLAW KIELAR.
