neonate.
Application filed April 13, 1915. Serial No. 21,002.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID ROSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Camden, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a ladys coat or waist hanger that the same will properly support the bust portion of the garment when in use but can be c0llapsed so that it will occupy but a minimum amount of space when not in use. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a coat or waist hanger showing the same in the collapsed condition; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same; Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the supporter expanded, as when applied to the coat Or waist; Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional view of a swivel connection between the hanger and the supporting hook at the top of the same, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view illustrating a modification of one of the features of my invention.
In the drawing, 1 and 2 represent, respectively, the top and bottom bars of the hanger which are connected by a series of flexible strips 3, preferably of spring steel, the ends of these strips being secured to the top and bottom bars in any appropriate way. Extending through the top bar 1 of the hanger is a central vertical opening 4: and intersecting this opening is a transverse opening 5, as shown in Figs.'2 and 3. Secured to the lower bar 2 of the hanger is a vertical rod 6 which passes through the central vertical opening a in the top bar of the hanger and has, at its upper end, a suspension hook 7, preferably connected to the rod 6 by a swivel joint such as hereinafter described.
The rod 6 is notched at a number of different points throughout its length, as

ing applied to the coat or waist while the parts are in the position shown in Fig. the top and bottom bars are then caused to approach each other and the elastic strips 3 connecting said bars will thus be projected, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to fill the bust portion of the coat or waist and hence properly support the same, the bars 1 and 2 being retained in this position by reason of the engagement of the pawl 9 with one of the notches in the bar 6. The provision of a series of these notches permits a number of different adjustments of the top and bottom bars 1 and 2 in respect to one another and a consequent difference in the extent of projection of the strips 3 so as to accommodate them to garments of different sizes.
In order to provide a swivel connection between the suspension hook 7 at the top of the hanger and the adjusting rod 6, I preferably secure to one of said members of the hanger a sleeve 11 which receives the other member of the hanger but permits the latter to rotate freely within it, and in order to prevent separation of the members of the hanger the rotating member, in this instance the member 7, has one or more grooves 12 formed therein, which grooves are engaged by internal ribs 13 in the sleeve 11, these ribs being preferably formed by indenting the metal of which the sleeve is composed, as shown in Fig. 4.
While I prefer to adopt the notched rod and pawl as a means of retaining the top and bottom bars of the hanger in difi'erent vertical relations to one another, other means than this may be employed within the scope of my invention, for instance, as shown in Fig. 5, the top bar may carry a nut 14 for the reception of a clamping screw 15 which bears upon a plain rod 6 and serves to retain the bar 1 in different positions of adjustment on said rod.
I claim:
1. The combination, in a garment hanger, of upper and lowerbars, flexible strips c011- necting the same, said upper bar having intersecting vertical and transverse openings therein, a notched rod passing through said vertical opening, and a pawl whose free end plays in the transverse opening and engages the notches of the rod.
2. The combination, in a garment hanger, of upper and lower bars, flexible strips conof @upper and rloLWer ibars, "flexible strips :eon-
necting the same, an adjusting rod for, re,- taining said upper and lower bars indifferjnt v t a re atio s t 91 n thersa u P nsion hOQk, an a swivel q lfifii0n iftw en th same and th 1 91 9 e d of said adjusting rod, said swivel connection comprising a sleeve secured to one of said membenszand surrounding a-portion of the other member, ,the latter :being grooved and the sleeve being indented so as to form thereon an internal rib for engaging said groove.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my 11ame tmthis specification, in the presenceof two subsoribing Witnesses.
