.'Be it known that I, J OHN C. LEONARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Arroyo Grande, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Pipe-Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a wrench with a casing to which a jaw is rigidly secured, another jaw which is curved being provided, the curved jaw having a rearwardly extending arm with teeth, with which mesh teeth on an arm of a lever fulcrumed to the casing, the other arm of the lever serving as a handle.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means for detachably securing the first mentioned jaw, so that another similar jaw, but of a different size, may be readily substituted, and be rigidly secured to the casing.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred form of my invention is described.
Inthe drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a view showing my wrench in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line tof Fig. 1; Fig. 5.is a perspective view showing one of the detachable jaws and Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that ahollow casing 10 is provided, having a front opening 11 and a rear opening 12. Extending from the sides of the casing there are keys 13, which are disposed in slots 14; of the jaws 15, these jaws 15 being provided in pairs and being detachable, so that jaws 15 of any desired size may be made use of with the wrench. These jaws 15 have shoulders 16 which abut against the front ends of the casing 10, and rearward extensions 17 which are spaced to form the slots 14:, being disposed against the sides of the casing 10 as illustrated in the drawings. There are orifices 18 in the extending portions 17 of the jaws 15, which register with orifices in the sides of the casing, so
that bolts 19 may be used to rigidly secure the jaws 15 to the sides of the casing, as shown in the drawings, lock washers 20 being mounted on the bolts 19 and being engaged by the nuts 21. These jaws 15 are detachable, as has been stated, so that jaws of any desired size may be made use of in connection with a pivoted jaw 22. This pivoted jaw 22 is preferably curved, as best illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and it is provided with an arm 23 which is fulcrumed to a pin 24, this pin 24L being riveted to the sides of the casing. The rear end of the arm 23 is provided with teeth 25, with which mesh teeth 26 on the forward arm 27 of a lever 28 which is fulcrumed to a pin 29 riveted to the sides of the casing 10. It will be seen that the jaw 22 extends through the forward opening in the casing 10, while the lever 28 extends through the rear opening 12 in the said casing, the rear arm 30 of i the lever 28 serving as a handle.
As a means to limit the movement of the lever 28, I provide a set screw 31 which meshes in a threaded orifice 32 in the casing, it being possible to limit the movement of the lever 28 as may be desired. This feature is of considerable importance when much power is to be applied to the handle 30.
There is a keyway 33 in the jaw 22 for re ceiving a tooth 34, it being possible to renew this tooth 3d as may be desired. The teeth 25 and 26 may be lubricated through an orifice 35 in the side of the casing 10, it being possible to close this orifice 35 with a plug.
In order to facilitate the quick adjustment of the jaws in position, so that the bolts 19 may be introduced in the orifices 18, I provide one of the rearwardly extending portions 17 with a recess 35 for abutting against a guide pin 36 in the casing. The orifices 18 in the rearwardly extending portions 17 in the jaws 15 are sure to register with the orifices in the casing for receiving the bolts 19 when the jaw at its recess 35 abuts against the guide pin 36, and the shoulders 16 of the jaws 15 abut against the front of the casing.
As a means of supporting the wrench when used to screw together vertical pipes, I provide the casing 10 with an eye 38, to
which a chain 37 or other support may be sethe casing 10, it serves to open the jaw 22 relatively to the jaws 15, while, when the arm 30 is moved forward it moves the jaw 22 relatively to the jaws 15 to securely grip the pipe 39, for rotating the latter.
On the handle 30 there is a longitudinally extending guideway 40 in which a stop 41 is slidablv disposed, it being possible to move the stop 41 to a position where it will strike against the rear of the casing 10 with a slight movement of the handle 30, a set screw 42 being provided for holding the stop 41 in this adjusted position. By this means it is possible to limit the movement of the handle 30 when the wrench is used on small pipe, so that the machinist may work more rapidly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a wrench, a casing having a side with a key, a jaw having a side with a shoulder for abutting against the end of the casing, the jaw extending at the side of the easing with a slot in which the key is disposed, means for holding the jaw to the casing in this position, another jaw pivoted to the casing, and means for operating the second mentioned j aw.
2. In a wrench, a casing having a side with a key, a jaw having a side with a shoulder for abutting against the end of the casing, the jaw extending at the side of the casing with a slot in which the key is disposed, means for holding the jaw to the easing in this position, another jaw pivoted to the casing and having an arm extending rearwardly, with teeth at the end of the arm, and a lever fulcrumed to the casing and having an arm with teeth which mesh with the first mentioned teeth, the other arm of the lever serving as a handle.
3. In a wrench, a hollow casing having sides, with a key on each side, there being openings at the forward and rear ends of the casing, two jaws having shoulders for abutting against the front of the casing, the
jaws extending at the outer sides of the casing, with slots in which the keys are disposed, means for holding the jaws to the casing in these positions, another jaw having an arm disposed through the forward opening in the casing and fulcrumed within the casing, there being teeth at the rear end of the arm, and a lever disposed through the rear opening of the casing and fulcrumed within the casing, there being teeth at the forward arm of the lever which mesh with the first mentioned'teeth, the rear arm of the lever extending beyond the casing and serving as a handle.
4. In a wrench, a casing, a jaw secured to the casing, another jaw pivoted to the easing and having an arm extending rearwardly with teeth at the rear end of the arm, a lever fulcrumed to the casing, there a the other arm of the lever extending beyond the casing to serve as a handle, there being a guideway on the lever, a stop slidably disposed in the guideway for striking against the casing to limit the movement of the lever relatively to the casing, and means for holding the stop in adjusted position in the guideway.
5. In a wrench, a casing, a jaw secured to the casing, another jaw pivoted to the casing, a lever secured to the casing, means by which the lever is adapted to operate the second mentioned jaw, there being a guideway on the lever, a stop slidably disposed in the guideway for striking against the casing to limit the movement of the lever relatively to the casing, and means for holding the stop in adjusted position in the guideway.
