nonsense,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SQHUYLER G. CRUZAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'hittier, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to provide improved means for quickly and conveniently adjusting the movable jaw of the wrench upon the nut or other object to be turned.
In this wrench a rack device is provided to prevent improper opening of the adjustable jaw, but the entire tool is simply and inexpensively constructed.
Other objects and advantages may appear in the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention.
Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench in the open, operative position, a part of the adjustable jaw being broken away to show interior construction; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal mid-section on line m of Fig. 3, the adjust-able jaw being closed; Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line :0 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the adjustable jaw 1 has a longitudinal and an oscillatory movement upon the shank 2 which carries the stationary jaw 3. Said adjustable jaw 1 carries a dog 4 which may be oscillated into and out of engagement with a series of ratchet teeth 5 formed along the front edge of the shank 2 to hold said adjustable jaw against improper opening. Bore 6 through the adjustable jaw is flared at its ends as shown, to provide room for the pin or dog 4, and to permit the oscillation of said dog into and out of engagement with said ratchet teeth. The adjustable jaw is pressed toward the stationary jaw by means. of a coil spring 7 seated at one end in a bore 8 formed in the block 9. The other end of spring 7 is seated upon an annular shoulder 11 in a bore 12 formed in the adjustable jaw 1. In order to keep said spring in place, a bar 13 is fastened to block 9 within bore 8, the outer end of said bar always remaining more or less within the bore 12. Within block 9 bar 13 may have a reduced end portion 13 the end of which is upset, as shown, to hold said bar in place. Block 9 is fitted tightly onto shank 2, and is also held in place by the handle 14.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented J none 4, 1912. Serial No. 645,886.
The rear side of shank 2 is provided with a groove 15 along which travels a wire spring 16 having an out-bent end portion 17 secured to the rear portion of jaw 1. Said spring 16 tends to oscillate the movable jaw in the reverse direction to the coil spring 7 and therefore causes a freer closing movement of the adjustable jaw.
The adjustable jaw is provided with a lip 18 which protrudes forwardly beyond the stationary jaw. Said lip is therefore adapted to engage the object to be turned to open the wrench in the manner shown in Fig. 2 where the outline of a nut is indicated in dotted lines. In opening the wrench the operator will press his thumb (indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2) against the rear portion 19 of the adjustable jaw to disengage the dog from the ratchet teeth during the opening of the wrench by pressure of the adjustable jaw against the nut. The operator will at the same time press the wrench forwardly toward the nut so that the jaws will embrace the nut the instant they are opened wide enough. The pressure of the thumb will then be removed from the adjustable jaw, allowing the spring 16 to oscillate the adjustable jaw rearwardly bringing the dog 4 into engagement with ratchet teeth 5 to prevent farther opening of the adjustable jaw.
I claim:
1. The combination, with the stationary jaw and shank having ratchet teeth along the front edge thereof, of an adjustable jaw having a longitudinal and an oscillatory movement on said shank, a dog carried by said adjustable jaw and movable by the oscillation thereof into and out of engagement with said ratchet teeth, a spring to resist the movement of said adjustable jaw from said stationary jaw, said adjustable jaw having a lip projecting beyond the stationary jaw, said lip being adapted to engage an object to be turned to open the wrench, said adjustable jaw having a rear portion adapted to be engaged by the thumb of the operator to disengage said dog from the ratchet teeth during the opening of the wrench.
2. In combination, a shank, a stationary jaw, a movable jaw slidable lengthwise of said shank having a lip projecting forwardly beyond said stationary jaw, said lip being adapted to engage an object to be turned to assist in opening the wrench from a closed eondition, and means to releasably scribing Witnesses at Los Angeles, in the hold said slidable jaw against opening movecounty of Los Angeles and State of Calilnent, said slidable jaw when released being fornia, this 18th day of August 1911.
