To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. GREB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lutherville, in the county of Baltimore and State of l'vfaryland,'have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to wrenches, and more particularly, though not necessarily, to hub wrenches-2'. 6., wrenches designed to be manipulated within the tubular end of a wheel hub.
lhe invention consists in the simple, compact, strong and easily operated wrench hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which are hereby made a part hereof: Figure 1 is a front elevation and Fig. 2, a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the wrench. Fig. 4: is a transverse section taken on the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
In accordance with my invention the handle 1 of the wrench is provided at one end with a portion 2 of increased thickness which extends forwardly from the handle and merges into a shank 3, located in front of the plane of the handle. The said shank 3 merges, in turn, into a lateral fixed jaw 5.
Formed in the back of the comparatively thick portion 2 is a recess 6 which extends through the width of the portion, Fig. 3, and provided in the faces of the portion 2 and shank 3 and extending continuously throughout the length thereof is a longitudinal guideway 7 in the side walls of which are longitudinal grooves 8, Figs. 3 and 4.
Connected with the portion 2 and mounted to rotate in the recess 6 thereof is a longitudinally-disposed screw 9 the thread edges of which are preferably milled as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to facilitate turning thereof.
Slidable in the guideway 7 and the grooves 8 thereof is the tongued shank 10 of a slidable, lateral jaw 11 that is opposed to the jaw 5, as shown in Fig. 2. The said shank 10 extends longitudinally in opposite directions from the jaw 11, and it will also be observed that the tongues 12 are arranged on the side edges thereof with a view to strongly holding the jaw 11 to its work and precluding canting thereof in a direction away from the aw 5. Manifestly the portion of the shank 10 above the jaw 11 may be of the proportional length illustrated'or any other length, a short portion being sometime preferable so as to avoid undue projection of the shank beyond the upper end of the wrench when the jaw 11 is positioned close to the aw 5.
At the back of the shank 10 is a threadedrack 18 that is intermeshed with the screw 9. Consequently when said screw is rotated in one direction the jaw 11 will be moved toward the jaw 5, while rotation of the screw 9 will be attended, when in the opposite direction, by movement of the jaw 11 away from the aw 5.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that because of the described relative arrangement of parts, both the jaw shank 10 and the screw 9 will be strongly reinforced by the comparatively thick portion 2; and it will also be manifest that the location of the screw 9 facilitates adjustment of the jaw 11 when the jaws 5 and 11 are positionedin a tubular hub portion.
It is preferred to shape and tooth the jaws 5 and 11 as shown in Fig. 1, but this is not of the essence of my invention and therefore said jaws may be of any configuration and construction without departure from my claimed invention.
It will further be noted from the foregoing that the handle 1 is offset from the jaws 5 and 11 with a view to rendering convenient the manipulation of the handle alongside the spokes of a wheel.
As will be gathered from-the foregoing my novel wrench constitutes a highly efficient tool for use on automobiles inasmuch as it is adapted to take nuts of different configurations and sizes, and hence obviates the necessity of employing a number of costly socket wrenches of different sizes.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a wrench, a handle, a forwardly extending portion of increased thickness fixed with respect to the handle and having a recess in its back and also having in its forwardly extended portion guideway and longitudinal grooves in the side walls thereof, a shank fixed with re-' spect to and extending from the thick portion and arranged in a plane forward of a longitudinal jaw on said shank, a rotatable screw mounted in the recess of the thick portion, a slidable lateral jaw, and a slidable shank oarrying and extending longitudinally in opposite directions from said jaw and in the said guideway and having tongues on its side edges and also having at its back a 10 rack inter-meshed with the screw.
