7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BELA W. FRnosKA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a wrench with an adjustable jaw that can be easily and quickly adjusted; second, to furnish a wrench with simple and effective means for locking the jawin an adjusted position; third, to provide a strong and durable wrench consisting of comparatively few parts easily and quickly assembled, and fourth, to provide a wrench that can be advantageously used by machinists and other artisans.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure lis a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the wrench. Fig. 4: is a plan view of the movable jaw of the wrench, and Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive are bottom plans of the shank of the wrench showing the adjusting mechanism in various positions.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a shank 1, rectangular in cross section, and having the outer end thereof provided with an integral jaw 2. The jaw 2 has a gripping surface 3 at the forward side of the shank 1 and the inner side of the jaw, at the rear side of the shank 1, is provided with a socket 1, for a purpose that will presently appear. The rear side of the shank 1 has a longitudinal semi-cylindrical groove 5 extending from end to end of the shank. Rotatably mounted in the groove 5 is a rod 6 having the outer end thereof reduced and extending into the socket 4, as at 6 while the inner end of the rod protrudes beyond the shank 1 and is provided with a radially disposed arm 7 provided near its outer end with a laterallyprojecting pin 8. The rod 6 is provided with a cam 9, said cam being formed integral with the rod 6 and extending from the outer end thereof to a point intermediate the ends of said rod, for a purpose that will presently appear.
Movably mounted upon the inner end of the shank 1 and. the rod 6 is a sleeve 10 constituting a handle, said sleeve having circumferentially arranged knurled enlargements 11 to facilitate gripping the handle by the hand. The shank is cut away, as at 12 whereby the outer side of the sleeve 10 will be flush with the forward side of said shank and that portion of the sleeve 10 whichiprojects beyond the inner end of the rod 6 and is provided with a slotted inwardly projecting lug 13 adapted to engage the depending pin 8, whereby said pin will be shifted when the sleeve 10 is partially rotated. The sleeve 10 is retained in engagement with the shank 1 by a screw 14. mounted in and extending through a slot 15 provided therefor in the sleeve 10.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a movable jaw 16 said jaw having a rectangular opening 17 with the rear wall thereof concave, as at 18 to provide clearance for the shank 1 and the rod 6. The jaw 6 is braced upon the shank 1, the forward end ofthe auxiliary jaw engaging the forward end of the movable jaw, and the rear ends of said jaws are connected by a strap 20 secured thereto by screws 21. WVhen the sleeve 10 is partially rotated, the rod 6 is shifted, either to move the cam 9 into engagement with the concave walls of the jaws l6 and 19 or out of engagement with said walls. When the cam 9 is out of engagement with the walls of the jaws 16 and 19, said jaws can be freely shifted upon the shank. hen the cam 9 is in engagement with the concave walls 18 of the jaws 16 and 19, said jaws are fixed relatively to the shank and when the wrench is placed in operation, the auxiliary jaw 19 braces the movable jaw 16.
What I claim is 1. A wrench comprising a shank having the rear side thereof provided with a longitudinal groove, a jaw formed integral with the outer end of said shank, a rod rotatably mounted in the groove of said shank and extending into the inner side of said integral jaw, a sleeve movably mounted upon the inner ends of said shank and said rod, an arm carried by the inner end of said rod within said sleeve, a laterally projecting pin carried by said arm, a slotted lug carried by the inner side of said sleeve and adapted by an auxiliary jaw 19 movably mounted 1 to engage said pin, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank and said rod, and a cam approximately half the length of said rod and adapted to be shifted into engagement with said movable jaw to fix said jaw relatively to said shank.
2. A wrench comprising a shank having the rear side thereof provided with a longitudinal groove, a jaw formed integral with the outer end of said shank, a rod rotatably mounted in the groove of said shank and extending into the inner side of said integral jaw, a sleeve movably mounted on the inner ends of said shank and said rod, an arm carried by the inner end of said rod within said sleeve, a laterally projecting pin carried by said arm, a slotted lug carried by the inner side of said sleeve and adapted to engage said pin, a movable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank and said rod, a cam approximately half the length of said rod and adapted to be shifted into engagement with said movable jaw to fix said jaw relatively to said shank, and anauxiliary jaw movably mounted upon said shank and having the rear end thereof connected to the rear end of said movable jaw and the forward end thereof engaging the forward end of said movable jaw, substantially as described.
3. In a wrench, a wrench shank provided at its outer end with a fixed jaw and having a groove in the rear face thereof extending from end to end of the shank, a rod rotatable in said groove and provided at its inner end with a laterally-projecting arm overlying the inner end of said shank, a pin carried by said arm, a sleeve mounted on the inner end of said shank for partial rotation thereon, a lug carried by said sleeve and engaging the pin on said arm to rotate the rod as the sleeve is rotated, a jaw slidable on the wrench shank and rod, and a cam on the rod for engagement with said jaw to hold the same in adjusted position.
4. In a wrench, a wrench shank provided at its outer end with a fixed jaw and having the rod when the sleeve is rotated, a jaw slidable on the wrench shank and rod, and a cam on the rod for engagement with the jaw to hold the latter in adjusted position.
5. In a wrench, a wrench shank provided at its outer end with a fixed jaw, a rod rotatable on the rear face of said shank, an arm carried by the inner end of said rod and overlying the inner end of the shank, a sleeve surrounding the shank and rod and extending beyond the inner end of the shank, connections between the extending portion of said sleeve and said arm whereby the rod is rotated in unison with the sleeve, a jaw slidable on the shank and rod, and a cam carried by the rod for engagement with the slidable jaw to look the latter in adjusted position.
