Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DE BAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aurora, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tools of the combination type and has as its general object to provide a tool which may beemployed as a wrench, a plier, a wire cutter, and a screwdriver.
One of themore specific objects of the invention is to provide a tool embodying a relatively fixed wrench jaw and an adjustable jaw, and novel means for maintaining the adjustable jaw in its positions of adjustment, and in this connection the invention further contemplates so constructing the tool as to permit of instantaneous adjustment of the adjustable jaw .to adapt the tool for application to nuts, bolts, pipes, or rods, or similar elements, of various dimensions.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for coaction with the adjustable jaw and adapted to securely hold said jaw in any position to which it is adjusted with relation to the relatively fixed jaw, the said means being, movable into coactive relation to the adjustable jaw through the closing of the handles of the tool and being therefore adapted to be securely held in such engagement so long as the handles are grasped and while the tool is being manipulated.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the means for holding the adjustable jaw in positions of adjustment that it, in connection with an associated one of the handle members of the tool, may be made to serve the purpose of a plier.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool embodying the invention;
nigure 2 is a similar view, parts being shown in section and the several component parts being shown in full lines in one position of adjustment and in dotted lines in anotherposition of adjustment; and
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. The tool embodying the invention comprises a pair of crossed pivoted handle members one of which is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and may be considered as a relatively fixed member, and the other of which is indicated by the numeral 2 and may be considered as a movable handle mem her. At their point of crossing the handle members are pivotally connected by a pivot bolt or pin 3, and one of the members as for example the member 2 may be provided adjacent the pivot with a notch 1 formed in one edge and adapted, in the swinging movement of the member 2 upon its pivot, to move past the edge of the corresponding portion of the member 1 so as to adapt the tool to be employed as a wire cutter. Also the end of one of the handle members as for example the member 1 may be beveled upon opposite sides to provide a screw driver bit indicated by the numeral 5.
Forwardly of the pivot 3, the member 1 is extended as at 6 to provide a fixed wrench jaw indicated by the numeral 7 and the working face of this aw may be smooth or it may be provided, as illustrated in the drawings, with transverse serrations 8 adapting the tool for application to a pipe or rod equally as well as to a nut or bolt. The movable or adjustable jaw of the tool is indicated in general by the numeral 9 and the same is provided at its inner end with a flat sided head 10 of general circular form which head is disposed between the side members 11 of a yoke 12 which is substantially U-shaped and includes in addition to the side members 11 a connecting bottom portion 13. The yoke 12 is disposed to straddle the extension 6 of the handle member 1 at the rear or inner end of the jaw 7 and'the said side portions 11 of the yoke are riveted or otherwise secured asv at 1 1 to the opposite faces of the said extension. In mounting the jaw 9, a pivot pin 15 is fitted axially through the head 10 of the said jaw and through the side members 11 of the yoke 12 and it will be evident particularly by reference to Figure 2 that the said jaw 9 may be angularly adjusted about the pivot 15 so as to adjust its working face with relation to the working face of the jaw 7 and thus adapt the tool for application to nuts, bolts, pipes, rods, and other ele ments of different dimensions. In order that the jaw 9 may have freedom of ad justment, the connecting portion 13 of the yoke 12 is preferably cut away at the tom ward side of the yoke as indicated by the numeral 16 and as best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
In order that the jaw 9 may be held in positions of adjustment, it is provided upon the periphery of its head 10 with teeth indicated by, the numeral 17,-and a look ing member is provided for coaction with the head of the said jaw and is indicated in general by the numeral18 and comprises a block 19 slidably mounted within the yoke 12 between the sides 11 thereof and between the Connecting portion 13 and the adjacent edge of the extension 6 of the handle member 1. The block 19 is provided in its forwardly presented edge with a curvilinear recess 20 the wall of which is formed with teeth 21 which are adapted to mesh with the teeth 17 of the jaw head 10 when the block 19 is 9 so as to hold the the position to which it hasbeen adjusted The block 19 may be permitted to drop to the first mentioned position or in other words out of 00- active relation to the jaw 9 by gravity but it is shifted into coactive relation to the said jaw through the medium of the handle member 2 and in order that this may be effected the block 19 is provided with a straight rear face 22, and the handle member 2 forwardly of the pivot 3 is provided with a similar face 23 adapted to be brought into engagement againstthe face 22 when the handle member 2 is closed or swung upon its pivot in the direction of the handle member 1. It will now be evident that by permitting the block 19 to' dropout of engagement with the head of the jaw 9, this aw may be adjusted upon its pivot and with relation to the jaw 7 to assume the desired position whereupon the handle member 2 may be closed or swung toward the handle member 1 thus shifting the block 19 into locking engagement with the head of the said jaw 9- and maintaining the jaw in its position of adjustment so long as the tool is grasped and is being" manipulated.
In order that the tool maybe employed in the same manner as an ordinary pair of pliers, the faces 22 and 23 of the block 19 and handle member 2 respectivelyare, as stated, formed straight and theyare prefera'bly roughened so as tomore securely grip any element inserted between them.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1.. In a tool of the class described, handle members directly pivoted to each other, a
jaw fixed with relation to one of said members, a jaw freely adjustable with relation to the first mentioned jaw, and a locking member supported upon the fixed jaw and coacting with the adjustable jaw to hold the same in positions of adjustment and actuated through movement of the other handle member.
2. In a tool of the class described, handle members directly pivoted to each other, a jaw fixed with relation to one of said 'mem bers, a jaw adjustable with relation to the first mentioned jaw, and a locking member supported upon the fixed jaw and coacting with the adjustable jaw to hold the same in positions of adjustment, the said locking member and other handle member having jaw, a second jaw freely angularly adjustable with relation to the first mentioned, jaw and supported thereon, a locking member for the adjustable jaw supported upon the fixed jaw and movableinto and out of locking en.- gagement with the adjustable jaw, and a handle member directly pivoted upon and movable with relation to the first mentioned handle member and coacting with the looking member tomove the same into coactive engagement with the said adjustable jaw.
4. In a tool of the class described,handle members directly pivoted to each other, a jaw fixed with relation to one of said handle members, a yoke supported by said, member, a second j aw pivotally mounted in said yoke for coaction with the first mentioned jaw, and a locking member slidable in said yokeand movable into and out of coactive engagement with-the said second. mentioned jaw, movement of the other handle member in one direction upon its pivot serving to effect adjustment of'the said locking member to lock the adjustable jaw in fixed position with relation to the fixed jaw.
5. In a tool of the class described,a handle member, a relatively fixed jaw associated therewith, a jaw supported upon the fixed jaw for pivotal adjustment with relation thereto and having a rack head, a locking member supported upon the fixed jaw and movable into and out of coactive relation to the headof the adjustable jaw and having a toothed portion for coaction with theteeth of the said jaw head, and a handle member directly pivoted upon the first mentioned handle member and operable to shift the said locking member into locking engagement with the said adjustable jaw.
6. In a tool of the class described, handle members directly pivoted to each other, a jaw fixed with relation to one or" said member-s, a jaw adjustable with relation to the fixed aw and supported thereon, and means actuated through movement of the other handle member for locking the last mentioned jaw in fixed position with relation to the fixed jaw.
7. In a tool of the class described, a handle member,aj aw rigid with relation thereto, a yoke supported by the said jaw, a secondjaw pivotally mounted at one end within the yoke for free angular adjustment with relation to the first-mentionedjaw and provided with a rack concentric to its pivot, a lockin block slidably fitted in the yoke and mova le toward and from the said pivoted end of the second-mentioned jaw and having a recess the wall of which is of ratchet formation to coact with the ratchet of the said secondmentioned jaw and thereby hold the said jaw in positions of its angular adjustment, and a second handle member directly pivotally mounted upon the first-mentioned handle member and having an abutment extension for coaction with the block to slide the block into coactive engagement with the ratchet of the second-mentioned jaw when the second-mentioned handle member is swung upon its pivot in one direction.
