COMBINATION TOBACCO-CAN .AND MATCH-HOLDER.
Specication of Letters Patent.. l
raten-eea .rank-ramera.
.appiicationvaiea april i2; 1,915. serial no. aerea.
Be it known that I, ADAM 4LOCHNER, a
citizen of the ;United"States, residing at and aims to provide a tobacco-can provided' with a match holder or receptacle whereby i matches may be carried by the can and readily removedv for lighting the pipe or cigarette, and in order that it is unnecessary to carry the matches independent of the can as is ordinarily done.
lt is also within the scope of the invention to provide a device'of the nature indi cated, embodying a unique construction and assemblage of the component parts, whereby the device is not only simple, compact, nonencumbering and inexpensive in construction, but is also convenient, serviceable, practical and efficient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention raesides in the com-l bination. and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described andclaimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is anedge view of the tobacco can which is provided with the match holder. Fig. 2 is a partial sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, portions being illustrated in elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 3.
n In carrying out the invention, there is employed a flat tobacco can 1 of usual construcf tion adapted to be carried in the pocket, and 'formed from sheet metal. This can l has a bottom 2, and a removable'slip cover or cap 3 closing the mouth of the can. A false bottom 4 is disposed within the can or receptacle l slightly above the bottom 2 of the can and the side edges of the false bottom 4:
are provided with tongues `5 projecting.
therefrom and projecting through slots 6 provided in the; 'sides of the can l. The false bottom 4 is preferably constructed of sheetJ metal, and the tongues 5 are clenched or bent upon the exterior of the can l, tol securely fasten thefalse bottom a in place. @ne end of the false bottom 4r is spaced slightly from one edge portionof the can l, to provide a slot 7 between the said end of the false botf tom and the said edge portion of the can.
The space or chamberbetween the false bottom et and the bottom 2 of the can provides a match holder or receptacle, and the aforesaid edge portion. of the can is provided with an opening 8 between the bottoms and l and which provides a mouth for the match holder, through which openingr or mouth 8 the matches may be introduced and withdrawn.
As a means for normally closing the opening 8 of the match holder, a valve or shutter 9, constructed of sheet metal, is slidable along the interior of that'edge portion of the can l having the opening 8, the valve or shutter '9 sliding through the slot "Z be tween the false bottom el and respective edge portion of the can, and projecting below and above the false bottom. The valve or shutter- 9 is curved or bent transversely to conform to the curyature of the edge portion of the can, and the respective end of the false bottom is curved similarly, whereby the valve 9 may slide snugly along the edge portion of the can. As a means for enabling the valve 9 to be slid open and closed, the said edge portion of the canll is provided with a vertical or longitudinal slot 10 above the false bottom Ll, and a rivet or other operating element 1l is engaged to the valve 9 and works within the slot 10, the rivet having an outer head or irnob which may be pressed by the thumb or fingers for sliding the valve upwardly or downwardly.
The valve 9 closes the slot l0, so as to prevent .the accidental discharge of tobacco through the said slot.
The tobacco is retained within the can l above the false bottom 4i, and the matches are held within the match holder between the two bottoms. Ordinarily, the valve 9 is slid downwardly to close the opening' 8, to prevent the matches from being' lost or dropped out of the holder. After the tobacco is removed from the can foriilling a pipe or rolling acigarette, the valve 9 be slid upwardly to open position, for enabling a match to be withdrawn from the match holder, and to enable the pipe or cigarette to be lighted.
The present device ismost convenient, since the matches are carried by the tobacco can or receptacle, and it does not require the separate handling of both a tobacco can and a match holder., The tobacco can maybe provided with the false bottom and valve without depreciable or prohibitive expense, in order that the invention may be embodied fin ordinary tobacco cans which are discarded after being emptied, although it is to be understood that the invention may be employed in a permanent tobacco can or holder and may be refined when more expensive or elaborate features are desired in the struc-- ture.
Having' thus described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s A flat receptacle adapted to be carried in the pocket and having a-false bottom above its bottom and an opening in one edge portion between the bottoms, there being a slot between one. Iend of the false bottom and said edge portion of the receptacle, ar valve slidable upon'the inner side of said edge portion of the receptacle and mo 'able through said slot for closing' said opening, said edge portion of the receptacle having a vertical slot above the false bottom, and a headed ele-ment carried by the valve. and working in said slot for guiding the valve and enabling the Yalve to be manually opened and closed.
In testimony that I elaim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto a'liixed my signature in the presence ot' two witnesses.
ADAM LOCHNER.
