- COMBINATION CIGARETTE AND MATCH CONTAINER.
To all whom t may concern: y
Be it knownlthat I, EDWARD H. A NsHEnM, a citizen of the United States, `residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Combination Cigarette and atch Containers', of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to containers espe# 4 cially adapted for containing` matches, cigarettes and the like, and hasfor its' object to provide an inexpensive, compact container having a magazine for cigarettes and the like and a separate container for matches, provision being made whereby the cigarettes may be inserted or removed, one
at a time, without interfering with the others contained therein, while the matches may be removed .without interfering in the leastv with the cigarettesl contained therein, said device beingvery strong andl durable so as toybe carried in the pocket without danger of breaking or injuring the cigarettes.
Another object ofthe invention resides inthe means Vfor operatingthe device to allow the cigarettes to be removed or toreplenish the supply of cigarettes. l
The invention consists` inv the i combinationv and .arrangement of parts4 set forthy in thel following specification and particul-arly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings; p l Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec'- tion.

the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is an endview of the container.. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on theline44 of Fig. 1. l
Similar numerals refer to'like parts in the several views of the drawings.`
In ,thesdrawings, `1 -indicates the louter,-
casing of a container, said casing being preferably cylindrical and lprovided with.` a slot 2 extending longitudinally of one sidethereof f for nearly theentire length -of said casing, said slotbeing substantially the size of a cigaretteV and constituting' an through which thefcigarettes are inserted into said containerl or through which ytheyv4 are removed, one at atime, to beused.
c Vspecification of Letter'srateaf. Patented. Mar Application led November 26, 1918.l ,Serial No. 264,130'.`

contain cigarettes.
One end of the inner casing 3 is closed by a cap 5 permanently secured to said inner casing, saidfcap having an annular rim 6 adapted to extend over the adjacent end of the outer lcasing l and revolveloosely thereon. The opposite end of the inner casing 3 is openvat 7 and thisend'is also secured permanentlyv to a cap 8 bysolder or other `securing means, andthe cap8 alsohas'an .ieg 1920.4
he inner casing 3y forms an annular chamber 4 within theoutertcasing substan-- tially' equal in depth to the ndiameter of a f 4 cigarette,; and this chamberpis. adapted to annular rim 9, similartolthe rim 6, said w rims 9 and 6 being turned lin'wardly'toward each lother andA over their respective ends of the outer casing 1 and have rotatable engra-gement therewith so that the inner casing 3 maybe rotated with respect tosaidoutercasing and always maintained in its concentrlc relation therewith.'
As hereinbefore stated, the inner casing is placed Jwithin the outer 'casinga distance -equal to the'diameter lof alcigarette4 so as touform the annular*chamber-"4, which is the cigarette magazine. Arranged A.within the annulargchamber 4t and surrounding the casing 3 aretwo seriesof lseparators 10and 11 which. form pockets 12 for containing and Y positioning cigarettes, as lshownat A.
c These separators are attached to ysaid inner casing to rotate therewith and prevent :any circumferential movement of the cigarettes contained within the chamber 14. relatively to the inner casing 3, and further-4 more said separators prevent the cigarettes i from touching each other. These separators extend for onlyfashort distance lengthwise ofthe casingB/and `are provided with endv i pieces 13 and `14 respectively to engage the `ends of the cigarettes and prevent themfrom extending into ythe portion of said outer cas-y ing coveredy by the annular flanges 6 and 9,v
which would interfere with the removal of I thecigarette from thevcasing if such moves.
ments-were allowed.
The outer faces of the annular. rims 6 and' -9 are knurled or rougliened at 15 to faciliopening 7, and a cap 16 is pivoted at 17 to the cap 8 within a depression 18 formed in said cap. Means are provided for maintaining said cap in its normal position, said means embodying preferably a resilient tongue 19 formed vfrom a portion of the material constituting said cap 8 which eX- tends inwardly into engagement with a rib 20 formed upon the eye 21, said rib being disposed upon opposite sides of the axis of the pivot 17 from the cap 1 6 so as to exert a closing action on said cap. i
y To facilitate the removal of the cigarettes from the magazine 4, recesses 22 are formed at opposite sides of the slot 2 near the ceny tral portion of said slot and in the s ace between the separators 10 and 11. hrough these recesses the fingers may be inserted when the inner casing, with the cigarettes carried thereby, has been rotated so as to present one of said cigarettes into alinement with said opening 2.
The size and capacity of the `container vmay' be varied to suit the individual taste.
In the resent embodiment, liowever, it contains eight pockets and an 'ample' supply of matches, as shownat B.' It is advisable to leave one vof the pockets empty, and this pocket is turned soas to aline with the opening 2 'of the outer casing, for if a cigarette.
is placed in every pocket, the pocket"alining with said'opening would have nomeans for preventing the cigarette from dropping through said opening 2.y
With said empty pocket in alinement with" said opening, the other cigarettes in the con`l rtainer will e amply protected by theouter caslng and may be carried in the pocket without danger of breaking or 'injuring the cigarettes therein. To facilitate thel scratching yof matches, the surface of the cap 16 is rouvhened or knurled at 23. Y Iaving thus specifically described my in vention, what I claim and desire by l'aetters Patent tosecure is: y
