OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCH RETAINING AND DISPENSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Batent.
Patented Jan. 28,1919.
Application filed July 6, 1918. Serial No. 243,546.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOYOKICHI HAYAsHI, a subject Of'the Emperor of Japan, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match Retaining and Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for retaining and dispensing matches, and an object of the invention is to provide a device as specified which is constructed of suitable sheet material, comprising relatively few parts whereby it may be manufactured for a relatively small cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a match retainer and dispenser a main body having an inclined partition therein forming a compartment for retaining unused matches, the lower portion of which compartment is hingedly connected to the main portion of the partition and is held, by means of a spring in a match retaining position whereby one match at a time may be drawn from this compartment and further to provide an inclined bottom for the main body, forming a support for used or burnt matches which bottom includes a hinged door normally held in closed position by a suitable latch.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved match retainer dispenser.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the match retainer and dispenser.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the match retainer and dispenser.
Referring particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates the main body of the match holder which is formed .of sheet metal or other suitable material bent to form a substantially rectangular shape. The rear side 2 of the body 1 is provided with a key hole slot or opening 3 therein by means of which the match retainer and dispenser may be suspended upon a nail or other similar support. The front side 4: of the body 1 is provided with a corrugated match striking surface 5 and also with a cut out portion intermediate its ends which merges into cut-out portion 6 extending inwardly in the sides of the body from the forward or front side or face of the body as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing.
An inclined partition 7 is positioned with- 1n the body 1 upwardly of the opening 6 and the cut away portion in the front side of the body, and it inclines downwardly and forwardly toward the upper edge of the cut away portion, providing a compartment 8 1n the upper end of the body for retaining unused matches. The lowermost portion of the partition 7 is hingedly connected tothe mam portion of the partition as shown at 9 and is held in an upward position by a spring 10. This hinged portion 11 of the partition engages and holds an unused match as indicated at A against the inner surface of the front side 4t, near the upper I edge of the opening or cut away portion in this front side, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The front side 4, and the h nged portion 11 of the partition 7 are provided with cut-away portions 12, which are adapted to permit the lowermost match A to be gripped by the thumb and finger of a person desiring to withdraw a match from the compartment 8. \Vhen one match has been withdrawn from the compartment 8, another match will fall downwardly, or be forced downwardly by the matches above it into a position to be dispensed from the device.
The bottom 13 of the [body 1 inclines downwardly toward the rear side 2 of the body and includes a hinged door 14 which is normally held closed by a suitable latch 15 and which door forms a support for the burnt matches. The burnt or used matches are placed within the lower portion of the body 1, through the cutout portion in the front side 4 of the body and the cut away portion 6 in the sides of the body and may be allowed to accumulate therein either until the lower portion of the body is filled, or until any convenient time for removing them from the lower compartment in the body, which removal is permitted by the hinging of the door 14;, which door when swung downwardly and held in an inclined position, forms a guide for guiding the burnt matches outwardly and downwardly toward the forward side of the retainer.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention, but,
I claim: 1. A match retainer and dlspenser, comprising a mam body having a downwardly and forwardly inclining partition positioned therein intermediate itsends, the front side of said body being cut away toform a dispensing opening below the lower edge of said partition, the lowermost portion of said partition being hingedly connected to the main portion of the partition whereby it may be moved inwardly to permit the-withdrawal of a match from withinthe body.
2. In a match retainer and dispenser, a main body of substantially rectangular shape havin'g a portion of its front side cut away, a downwardly and'forward inclining partition within said body inter-mediate its ends, the lowermost portion of saidparti- 'tion'being hingedly connected to the main portion "of'theupartition to permit it to be 'movedinwardly to allow the withdrawal of a-match therefrom, said cut away portion of the front side of the body permitting a'c cess to thc interior of the lower portion of thebody whereby burnt or used matches may be'pla'cedwithin the body below the inclined partition, and a door hingedly connected to the body and forming a portion of the-bottom th'ere'of to permitthe removal of burnt matches therefrom.
A match retainer and dispenser comprising a substantially rectangular body having' a portion of its front side cutaway intermediate its ends to permit admittance to' th'e lower portion of the body, theu-pper Copies bfithismatent may be obtained for end of said body being open, adownwardly and forwardly inclining partition within said body forming an upper match receiving compartment adapted to retain un-used matches, the bottom of said body inclining downwardly toward the rear side of the body, a door hingedly connected to the lower edge 'o'f'therear side of the body andforming a portionof-the bottom of the body whereby when said door is swung outwardly it will guide used matches downwardly and outwardly toward-the forward side of the body, the lower portion of said inclined partition being 'hingedly connected thereto, "and springs for normally holding said rhin ged portionoutwa-rclly toward the'inner surface ofthe front side of the body and in=gripping engagement with the match. a
5 A match retainer and dispenser, comprising a main body having a downwardly and'forwardly inclining partitionipositioned therein intermediate i'ts -ends,the front side of said body being cut away toform a dispensing opening below the lower edge of said partition, the lowermostportion of said partition being hingedly connected to the mainportion of the partition and being positioned wholly within the main body, and springs engaging the hinged portion ofsai'd partition for normally holding the same outwardly tow-ard the-inner surface of the front side of the body and in gripping engagement with a match.
