Description
B. G. WHITFIELD.
CIGARETTE PACKAGE.
APPLICATION FILED JUL Y 25.1918.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
- rinrr BALDWIN G. WHITFIELD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CIGARETTE-PACKAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application-filed July 25, 1918. Seria1No.246,675.
- To all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known'that I, BALDWIN Gr. WHIT- FIELD, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and use: ful Improvements in Cigarette-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toipaper and other receptacles employed for holding cigarettes, and its object is to provide a novel and 1mproved receptacle from which the cigarettes may be ejected singly, thus doing away with the annoyance and trouble of removing cig arettes from the ordinary containers, and
which usually render it diflicult to reach thereinto without damaging some of the cigar'ettes. The present device provides a container having a lid which draws out one cigarette each time it is opened, leaving the others untouched and in their proper shape. The object stated is attained by means of apombination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the v a Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective.
Referring specifically to the. drawings, the
container for the clgarettes 5 is rectangular, and has side walls, 6 and 6, respectively, and walls 7 and 7*, respectively, a' bottom cap 8 and a top wall 9. These parts are made of pasteboard, paper 01' other suitable material and they are connected in the usual manner. The container is dimensioned to hold three rows of cigarettes.
Over the top wall 9 is fitted a 10 hinged thereto by other suitable means. opening 12 in the 'wall 9 adjacent to the end wall 7, through which opening the cigarettes are adapted to be ejected singly in a manner to be presently described, the opening being of a sizeto accommodate one cigarette at a time. 7
Close to the end tainer, slidably seats an ejector composed of two thin flexible strips13 connected at their outer ends to the flap 10 near the free end thereof. These strips are parallel and laterally spaced, and at their inner ends they have a connecting piece which is bent downcover flap a tape 11, or by any This flap covers an I 7, in the space between the .tainer,
known,
As shown in Fig. 2 the thickness 0 the container only accommodates three rowsof cigarettes, and of the three bottom cigarettes, the outer twowill rest on the strips 13, whereas the middle one rests on the wall strips 13 and the tongues 16, and at a lower level than the end ones. Hence when the flap 10 is drawn, the middle cigarette will be ejected as described, and when it is withdrawn, and the'fiap is closed to push the ejector back into the conof the one which was removed, a slight jarring of the container facilitating this.
The container will be filled before the bottom cap 8 is applied and secured, and the container is not designed for refilling.
The container may be made of'sheet metal for permanence and greater rigidity, and a spring device may be provided for automate cally opening the flap 10 outward. Such spring-actuated lids or covers bein v well a detailed description or an ilTustration thereof not deemed necessary.
I claim:
1. A container having a discharge opening, a hinged flap covering the opening, and an ejector slidably mounted in the container and connected to the flap, said ejector having a pocket in line with. the discharge opening, and portions alongside the pocket to support the articles which are alongside the one being ejected.
2. A container having a discharge opening, a hinged flap covering the opening, and
an ejector slidably mounted in the container, said ejector being composed of a pair of laterally spaced strips connected at their outer ends to the flap and having at their inner ends a downturned connecting member, the space between the strips being in line another cigarette rolls into the place' Patented Feb. is, ioie.
llll
the aforesaid discharge opening, and having a Width to receive the article to be ejected, the strips supportinv the articles which are alongside the one being ejected.
3. A container having a discharge opening, a hinged flap covering the opening, and an ejector slidably mounted in the container, said ejector being composed of a pair of laterally spaced strips connected at their outer ends to the flap and having at their inner ends a downturned connecting meinber provided with forwardly extending laterally spaced tongues located beneath the strips, the space between the strips and the tongues being in line with the aforesaid discharg-15 n testimony whereof I affix my signature. 20
