Description

v L. N. OLSEN COMBINED CIGARETTE AND MATCH CASE Filed July 1923 leifi/l filsew Patented my 27,1 1924.
UNITED STATES min 1:. oLSEN, or BROOKLYN, New mm.
COMBINED CIGARETTE AND MA'LGH. CASE.
- Application filed July 9,
he inventionrelatesto a combined cigarette and match case adapted to receive and accommodate a full package of cigarettes in the original wrapper as well as a book of matches forfuse therewith, the matches, for example, being of the ordinary safety type with igniting strip attached thereto.
The invention has for its object a protective casing of this character which shall be compact and occupy as little space as possible, and which shall, moreover, be of dura-' ble construction and material to adequately protect the contents, and so arranged that a book of matches or pack of cigarettes may readily be inserted when it becomes neces-' sary to replenish the supply of same. Afurther object of the invention consists in the arrangement whereby the matches normally are sultablycovered and protected, when the box is closed, but wherem the igniting surface of the book will remain exposed thru the holding portion for the book as well as thru a lidor cover provided for the case.
The nature of the invention, however, will best be understood when describedin con- ;nection with the accompanying drawingsfln which-- I Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved ,ci arette and match case.
- rig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; and Fi' 3 is a plan view.
ig. 4 is a vertical section taken .on the line 4+4, Fig. 1. f
v Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the case with the cover swung open.
, Similar characters'of reference designate corresponding parts thruout the several views.
fReferring to the drawings, 10 designates a long thin container or receptacle of flat back and front wallsand curved sides and of the proper dimensions to receive with a snug fit a full package of cigarettes in the.
original wrapper; and this casing may be of any suitable material, preferab of thin light sheet metal, as aluminum. twill be understood that more expensive material may be employed for this purpose and that a r923. serial No. 650,334.;
casing may be embellished as desired.v The case may be drawn or pressed to shape; and
there is hin'gedly secured at the top edge of the back portion thereof a cover 11 for the top for closing securely the mouth ofithe case. The cover 11, furthermore, has inte. grally formed therewith a .flap member 13, also. of 'metal, and adapted to extend downwardly over the front of the case when the 1129p is in the closed position, as shown in ig. 1. g
There is provided, moreover, in any suitable manner at the front wall portion of the casing, an open receptacle :or pocket 15 hav-' ing side walls 16 and an intermediate turned- .up bottom member 17 in'the nature of a resilient tongue into which is adapted to be slid the bottom ortion of a book of matches 18. As is usua the bottom portion of the book of matches carries an igniting strip 19; e and the resilient tongue is cut away to provide a s lot or opening 20 thru which the i nitin strip will be exposed so that a mate may e struck thereonwithout the necessity of withdrawing the book from its holder.
'Moreover, the flap 13 is adapted to fit over and to close substantiall the match holder; and at-its lower end'is a 0 cut away to pro vide a slot or opening 21 registering with the slot 20 so that even when the cigarette and match holder case is closed entirely, as indicated in Fi 1, the igniting surface is still available. Ihe flap is turned over and inwardly at its lowermost edge to fit and look over the lower end of the match holder which is rounded for this purpose and a lip 23 extends downwardly and outwardly from ,the lowermost edge of the flap to afiord convenient means for opening the flap which may be swung back to the position indicated in F ig; 5. In this position, the interior of the case'lO is expose so that .a cigarette or cigarettes may be readily withdrawn, the 00 forward upper edge of the case having a curved notch 24 to facilitate withdrawal. It will be noted, also, that the matches are exposed and ready for use when the flap .is in this position; and whe'n'anew book 1s required it is necessary merely to slide out. the
stub of the old book and replenish same-with a new supply of matches. a
The combined cigarette and match case hereinbefore described isv of such proportions as to fit conveniently in a pocket wi hout undue bulgin' and affords substan ialprotection tothe contents which are con-I eealed thereby so long as the boxis closed,
though provlding an igniting or striking surface for a match. The box may thus be safelyll and readily carried about while keeping t e contents in proper condition.
up-turned tongueto retain a book of matches provided with an i niting surface said tongue being provide with an opening to expose the igniting surface of a book of matches when the same is inserted in the reemme 'eeptaele, a cover hinged to the upperedge of therear wall of the casing, extending over the top to close the mouth-thereof and having a depending flap extendin over the frontwall andthe match receptac e to close the latter,- the lower end of the flap being turned inwardly to look over the loweren of the tongue of the receptacle and having an opening adapted to register, when thus locked, with the oening 1n the said tongue. Signed. at New ork, 1n the county of New York and State of New York, this 6th day of July A. D. 1923.
