Filed Feb. 6, 1947 Barhey Bass Williams I Patented Oct. 11, 1949 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE p 2,484,327 r r COMBINED CIQGARETTE AND MATCH CASE Barney Bass Williams, Albany, Ga.
Application February 6, 1947, Serial No. 726,860
2 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to a combined cigarette and match case adapted to receive and accommodate a full package of cigarettes in the original wrapper, as well as the book of matches for use therewith, the matches, for example, being of the ordinary safety type with theigniting strip attached thereto.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a protective case of the character referred to which shall be .compact in construction and occupy as little space as possible and constructed of durable material to adequately protect the contents and so arranged that a book of matches or pack of cigarettes may readily be inserted in the case when it becomes necessary to replenish the supply thereof.
More specifically the invention embodies the provision of a combined cigarette pack-age and match book case and including a pocket at one side of the case for the mat-ch book and providing a single cover for the compartment for the cigarette package as well as for the pocket for the match book to close and protect the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide wedge means carried by the opposite ends of the case with which the walls of the cover are engaged to provide tight fitting engagement for the cover. A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view with parts broken away and shown in section;
Figure 2 is a group perspective view with the cover removed from the case;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, and
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the cigarette case which is of substantially rectangular form open at its top and of a size adapted to snugly receive a package of cigarettes 6. The case 5 is :preferably constructed of lightweight metal, such as aluminum or the like or of light plastic material. One upper 2 corner of the case is formed with sloping edges as shown at 7 to provide finger gripping means for a corner of the cigarette package 6 to tear the wrapper of the package to gain access to the cigarettes therein.
To the wider wall of the case opposite from the wall provided with the inclined edge I is suitably secured apocket 8 which slopes inwardly at its lower edge as shown at 9 and shaped to conforma'bly receive a book of matches ID. The upper side edges of the pocket 8 slope downwardly as shown at H to position the upper edge l2 of the front wall of the pocket below the upper edge of the case whereby to afford means for gripping the upper edges of the book of matches III to remove the same from the pocket, when desired. The upper end of the pocket 8 is open and a cover [3 is constructed of a shape to telescope over the upper end of the case 5 as well as over the upper end of the pocket 8 to completely cover the package of cigarettes 6 as well as the book of matches Ill.
Wedge blocks I 4 are suitably secured to the outside of the case 5 at the upper end wall thereof and adjacent opposite corners of the case, the
wedge blocks providing a tight fitting engagement for the side walls of the cover I3 to prevent any looseness between the cover and the case and to thus secure the cover in tight fitting engagement therewith against accidental loss or removal of the cover.
The cover serves to tightly close the top of the pocket 8 for the book of matches to keep body moisture from the matches and thus keep the matches in a dry condition.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A combined cigarette and match case comprising a main case section having a front and back wall and opposed side walls, adapted to receive a package of cigarettes, a :pocket formed integrally on the back wall of the main case adapted to receive a match book, said main case and pocket having open tops, each provided with a sloping edge to aiford a finger grip for the contents of the main case and pocket, a cover detachably extending over both the main case and the pocket, and wedges on the top corners of the main case for frictionally retaining the cover on the case and pocket.
2. A combined cigarette and match case comprising a rectangular main casing having substantially flat front and back walls and opposed end walls, adapted to retain a package of ,cigai rettes therein, said casing being open at one end to enable a package of cigarettes to be inserted in the casing, the top edge of one side being inclined downwardly, and adjacent portion of the top edge of the front being similarly inclined to communicate with the inclined terminal of the side edge and define an open portion exposing a corner of the package, an integral pocket fOI'lIlGd on the back wall of the casing and inclined downwardly and inwardly to conform to the contour of a package of book matches, outwardly slanted 5 11s 1299 15 Q1 said et f r g a o d top edge on the pocket, a rectangular cover de- 4 tachably received on the top of the casing and overlying the top edges thereof, an offset portion on said cover adapted to seat over the top edges of the pocket, and. wedges formed on the top corner of the casing for frictionally retaining the cover on the casing and over the pocket.
