CIGARETTE-PACKAGE FILLER.

Be it known that we, Enrrri G. Moons and MARGERY P. WOOD, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette-Packs. e F ill-- er, of which the following is aful, clear, and exact description.

This invention has relation to fillers for packages and has particular reference to a filler for a wrapped package containing cigarettes, little cigars or other similar articles.

One of the principal objects in view is to provide a filler for wrapped packa es containing cigars, cigarettes or other siini ar articles, which filler serves to subdivide the package into a plurality of compartments for separately housing and protecting each longitudinal row of cigarettes.

As a further object the invention contemplates in combination with a cigarette housing compartment, means for lifting and projecting the ends of the cigarettes from the open end of the compartment to facilitate the grasping and removal of the cigarette from the package.

As afurther object the invention aims to provide a filler and cigarette removal means of the character described which is extreme 1y simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture and highly eflicient in its purose.

p With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right isvreserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated bythe general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, 10 designates a standard form of wrapped cigarette package, which package includes a rectangular wrapper or sheet offlexible pliable material havinga continuous marginal edge 11 rovided with a plurality of inter-folded portions normally closing the end of the package, which edge is open to expose one end of the cigarettes. At the present time a relatively stifi filler is arranged within the package and embraces the cigarettes to protect the same against breakage but the longitudinal rows of cigarettes are not individually housed by said filler nor is there any means provided to facilitate the withdrawal or removal of the cigarettes, and therefore considerable difiiculty is experienced 'in removing the same which often results in breakage of the end of the cigarette.

The filler which constitutes the invention in the present case consists of a relatively stiif sheet of material which is bent medially upon itself to provide an end wall 12 approximately equal to the width of the package and to fit within the end wall thereof. The material is bent to further provide parallel outer side walls 13 corresponding approximately to the internal length of the package and adapted to lie against the inner side walls thereof. The strip is further bent from the free ends'of the side walls 13 inwardly to provide aligned opposite end walls 14 extending toward each other and in alignment with the remaining terminals of the strips bent toward the first mentioned end wall to provide spaced parallel'intermediate side walls 15, the free ends of which contact with the inner side of said first mentioned end wall 12 whereby the filler is inserted in the package defines together with a flpllurality of compartments 16 for individu y housing the cigarettes 17 in longitudinal single rows or files. The illustration in the present instance is particularl designed for packages in which three ongitudinal rows of cigarettes are provided for, but it is to be understood that the filler can and may be so formed as to accommodate two or more rows as desired.

The means for lifting and projecting the cigarettes above the upper end of the package and filler to facilitate the grasping and removal of the same from the package comprises a flexible strip of material or tape 18 one end of which is secured as at 19 to the upper edge of the end wall defining a cigarette compartment. The flexible element or tape 18 extends downwardly from its connected point 19 and under the lowerends of the row of cigarettes, thence upwardly adjacent the opposite end wall of the compartment with the free end 20 extending therebeyond. When the package is opened by unfolding the interfolded portions of the marginal edge 11 to expose the ends of the cigarettes, the user grasps the free ends 20 of the flexible element or tape 18 and by exerting a pull thereon lifts and projects the ends of the cigarettes upon the upper open edge of the package and the filler whereby the same may be readil grasped to facilitate their removal. When the cigarette or cigarettes desired have been removed, the

We claim:

1.
