"This invention relates to a tape dispenser and, more particularly, to a device for dispensing pressure-sensitive tape which is tacky or clingable upon one surface and usually is relatively nar i Such tape is commonly sold in rolls, the rolls being packed in their container or case from which theyare removed and usually placed in a machine from which they are dispensed.
We contemplate, by the present invention, providing a case or container which will rotatably support a roll or rolls of tape and so constructing the container that the tape may be dispensed therefrom without the necessity of employing a separate dispensing device.
To this end, the container is provided with an opening-through which the tape may be drawn from the roll, and is also provided with a tearoff blade or severing member against the edge of which thetape may be-torn off when a suflicient length has been unwound from the roll. Moreover, these elements are so arranged that when the length of tape has been severed, a free end will remain projecting from the container or case so that it maybe readilygrasped by the fingers of the operator for a succeeding operation.

The tape is'now torn off against this free edge of the element 33, as shown in Fig. 1, thus, leaving a length of tape lying alongthe under-or innenside of the element 33, andrestoring the parts "to the position shown in-Fig. 1. l 7

To this end, we have illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 oi the drawings a case provided with openings '23 and 24 which openings are adapted to receive the projection 30 and the severing device 33 of the split ring 28. In order, however, that the container may be sealed so that the tape will not be affected by the atmosphere, a strip of paper or tape 10 may be pasted over these openings to seal them.
Thus, one or more spools of tape may be sold in such a container which will be sealed until it is desired to use the tape. At that time, the strip of paper or tape 10 may be removed, the cover [2 removed from the body portion I0, and the split ring 28 inserted.
In making the opening 24, the metal adjacent two of the corners of the opening at one side is slit for a short distance beyond the end of the opening, as shown at 24 so as to leave a short length of material 25 which may be bent upwardly to form a lip corresponding to the lip 25 shown in Fig. 1. It will be understood, of course, that this lip 25 will lie within the outline of the surrounding material until after the strip 10 is removed after which it may be bent up to the desired position.
In Figs. 10 and 11 of the drawing, we have shown a similar construction in which the metal of the case is not entirely out through, but is merely partially punched out to provide knockout plugs H and I2 bounded by weakened lines 13 and 14. These plugs may be readily removed by the user and, when removed, will leave openings in the case to receive the projection 30 and the severing member 33. Therefore, in this form of our invention, there is also provided a container which will be sealed until the contents are desired to be used. Then the plugs H and 12 may be knocked out and the split ring inserted after the case is opened.
In this instance, the weakened lines are extended at one end of the knock-out plug 12 as shown at 15, so that after the plug 12 has been knocked out the short piece of metal 25 between the weakened lines I may be turned upwardly to provide a lip corresponding to the lip 25 shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
While we have shown and described some preferred embodiments of our invention, it will be understood that it is not to be limited to all of the details shown, but is capable of: modification cumferential flange and means for rotatably sup porting a roll of tape, said flangehavingan opening therein and a radially. extending lip adjacent said opening, a slide movably mounted.

3. A tape-dispenser as in claim 2, wherein the flange is provided with a second opening and the slide is provided with a finger piece projecting outwardly through said opening.

A tape-dispensing device comprising 2. casing having a body portion with a circumferential flange and means for rotatably supporting a roll of tape, said flange having an opening therein and one edge of said opening being turned outwardly to form a radially projecting lip, a slide movably mounted on the flange for movement to closed and open positions to cover and uncover said opening, and a severing member carried by the slide and projecting over said li when the slide is in closed position.
5. A tape-dispensing device comprising a casing provided with a body portion having a circumferential flange and means for rotatably supporting a roll of tape, said flange having an opening therein and a radially extending lip adjacent said opening, a slide movably mounted on the flange for movement to closed and open positions to cover and uncover said opening, and a severing member carried by said slide, said severing member being displaced outwardly from the slide and projecting beyond the slide to cover the lip and extend circumferentially beyond said lip when the slide is in closed position, whereby, when the tape is severed against said member, a free end thereof will project beyond this lip.
6. A tape-dispensing device as in claim 5, wherein the slide comprises an expansible resilient member mounted within the flange, and said severing member extends outwardly through said opening in the flange to the outside of the case.

A tape-dispensing device comprising a casing provided with a circular body portion having a circumferentially extending flange, means within the casing for rotatably supporting a roll of tape, said flange being provided with an opening through which the free end of the tape may extend, a slide movably mounted on said flange within the casing, a cutter carried by said flange and extending outwardly through said opening to the exterior of the casing, and a radially extending tape-end-supporting lip on said flange, adjacent the opening, over which the cutter extends. 8. A tape-dispensing device comprising a casing provided with a circular body portion having a circumferentially extending flange, means within the casing for rotatably supporting a roll of tape, said flange being provided with an opening through which the free end of the tape may in claim 1,
