(Cl. 225-19) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sheet paper dispensing cartons, and more particularly to a carton having a serrated cutting edge with a guard for prevent-ion of injury to the user while tearing the paper from the roll in the carton.
Ordinarily with sheet paper dispensers having a serrated metal edge for tearing the paper as it is dispensed from the carton the metal edge is exposed to the user of the paper and often times the user will cut or injure the hands in handling the carton or paper. The present invention is provided to eliminate this danger of injury.
The principal objects of the present invention is to provide a carton made of cardboard or the like having an elongated slot longitudinally in one side thereof through which the sheet of paper may be dispensed and one side edge of the slot having secured thereto a serrated metal strip and the cardboard being serrated so that the teeth of the serrated metal part will be covered by the teeth of the cardboard to prevent injury of the user.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a carton for housing a roll of paper such as decorative gift wrapping paper having a core therein of relatively stiff material to hold the rolled paper against the inner Wall of the carton; to provide end members for the carton for engaging the core upon which the paper is rolled to hold the same in alignment with the slot through which the paper is dispensed; to provide means in the end members for frictionally holding the same on the carton and to provide a device of this character simple and economical to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein are set forth by way of illustration and example certain embodiments of this invention.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention with parts broken away to better illustrate the same.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional view particularly illustrating the paper being serrated by the cutting edge of the carton as it is dispensed from the carton.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectional view particularly illustrating the end members and the relation of the core and paper to the sidewalls of the carton.
FEG. 4 is enlarged cross-sectional view particularly illustrating the end members and the paper dispensed through the slot in the carton.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
The numeral 1 generally indicates a dispensing carton embodying the features of the invention which comprises sheet of cardboard or the like 2 here illustrated to be rolled to a substantially round shape although other forms may be utilized without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The tubular cardboard member 2 has open ends 3 and when rolled is provided throughout its longitudinal length with a slot 4 having side edges 5 and 6 through which a roll of paper, as indicated at 7 is dispensed in sheet form as indicated at S. The paper in sheet form is rolled on a core 3'. The side edge 6 of the slot is provided with an elongated metal strip 9 and secured to the underneath side of the edge by rivets or the like as indicated at 19. The free edge of the metal strip 9 is provided with saw 3,1 16,864 Patented Jan. 7, 1964 teeth as indicated at 11 to provide a cutting or tearing edge 12 for the paper.
The edge 6 of the cardboard carton is provided with a serrated edge 13 having teeth 14 which extend over and match the teeth 11 of the metal strip 9 so that the teeth of the cutting strip will not be exposed to the users hands and will act as a guard to prevent injury to the user.
The tubular member 2 has its edges spaced apart to form the slot 4 extending throughout its length and is provided with end members .15 and 16. The end members are identical and such end members consists of a cylindrical wall 17 which engages over the end of the tubular member 2 as indicated at 18 and hold the tubular member with the roll of paper and core therein and prevent the walls of the carton from separating or spreading. The end member has an inwardly extending boss 18 consisting of a flat wall 19 which engages against each end 20 of the core 8 to prevent the core from moving laterally in the tube. The boss has inwardly tapered side walls 21 and spaced ribs 22 around the boss which engage the inside of the wall of the tube 2 as indicated at 23 (FIG. 3) and frictionally holds the end members on the ends of the tubular member 2.
In use of the carton the roll or" paper on the core is placed inside the tubular member 2, edge 25 of the paper extending through the slot 4 and wrapped around the tubular member as indicated at 26, FIG. 1, to indicate the type and color of the paper to the customer or purchaser when the carton is on display. If desired a sheet of cellophane or other similar material 27 may be utilized for wrapping around the paper to prevent its being soiled on display and such cellophane being fastened by any suitable means such as Scotch tape or the like (not shown).
When it is desired to use the paper, the cellophane may be removed and the required amount of paper unrolled through the slot 4 of the carton and then by holding the carton in one hand the sheet of paper may be drawn against the serrated cutting edge 12 of the metal cutting member 9 to sever the paper in a straight line particularly by movement of the paper against the serrated edge as shown in FIG. 2. The serrated cardboard paper covering the serrated cutting edge will stiffen the serrated cutting edge and also aid in severing the paper as it is moved thereacross.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that we have provided an improved dispensing carton for sheet paper in rolls and particularly having a safety cutting edge for cutting the paper as it is dispensed from the carton.
It is to be understood that while we have illustrated and described one form of our invention it is not to be limited to the specific form or arrangement of parts herein described and shown except insofar as such limitations are included in the claims.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A carton for dispensing a roll of sheet paper com prising:
(a) a relatively stilf tubular member having edges spaced apart forming a slot therebetween and open ends,
(b) a serrated cutting member having cutting teeth secured to one of said edges of the tubular member, said one edge of the tubular member being serrated and having teeth overlying the cutting teeth on the cutting member to shield said cutting teeth,
(0) paper in rolled sheet form rolled in said tubular member, the free edge of the sheet paper extendable through said slot,
(d) end members having a wall portion engaging over the ends of said tubular member and forming ends for said slots spaced from the ends of said tubular member,
(6) means on said end members spaced from said wall portion engaging the inside of the ends of the tubular member cooperating with said wall portion to hold the edges of said tubular member is spaced relation, and
(1) means on said end members to prevent said rolled sheet paper from lateral movement in said tubular member.
2. A carton for dispensing a roll of sheet paper comprising:
(a) a relatively stiif tubular member having edges spaced apart forming a slot throughout its length and having open ends,
(b) a serrated cutting member having teeth secured to one of said edges of the tubular member,
(c) a core member having ends, said core being shorter than said tubular member,
(01) paper in sheet form rolled on said core, the free edge of the sheet paper extendable through said slot,
(e) end members having a wall portion engaging over the ends of said tubular member,
(f) means on said end members spaced from said wall portion engaging the inside of the ends of the tubular member cooperating with the said wall portion to hold the edges of said tubular member in spaced relation, and
(g) inwardly extending bosses on said end members having plane surfaces engaging the ends of said core member to prevent lateral movement of said paper in said tubular member.
3. A carton for dispensing a roll of sheet paper comprising:
(a) a relatively stiff tubular member having edges spaced apart forming a slot throughout its length and having open ends,
(12) a serrated cutting member having cutting teeth secured to one of said edges of the slot, one edge of the tubular member being serrated and having teeth overlying the teeth on said cutting member so that said cutting teeth will not be exposed to the hand of the user,
(0) a core member having ends spaced inwardly from the ends of the tubular member,
(0.) paper in sheet form rolled on said core, the free edge of the sheet paper extend able through said slot,
(2) end members having a Wall portion engaging over the ends of said tubular member and inwardly extending bosses,
(f) spaced ribs on said tapered bosses spaced from said wall portion engaging the inside of the ends of the tubular member cooperating with the said wall portion to hold the edges of said tubular member in spaced relation and forming said slot, and
(g) a flat well portion on said bosses engaging the ends of said core member to prevent lateral movement of said paper in said tubular member.

A CARTON FOR DISPENSING A ROLL OF SHEET PAPER COMPRISING: (A) A RELATIVELY STIFF TUBULAR MEMBER HAVING EDGES SPACED APART FORMING A SLOT THEREBETWEEN AND OPEN ENDS, (B) A SERRATED CUTTING MEMBER HAVING CUTTING TEETH SE CURED TO ONE OF SAID EDGES OF THE TUBULAR MEMBER, SAID ONE EDGE OF THE TUBULAR MEMBER BEING SERRATED AND HAVING TEETH OVERLYING THE CUTTING TEETH ON THE CUTTING MEMBER TO SHIELD SAID CUTTING TEETH, (C) PAPER IN ROLLED SHEET FORM ROLLED IN SAID TUBULAR MEMBER, THE FREE EDGE OF THE SHEET PAPER EXTENDABLE THROUGH SAID SLOT, (D) END MEMBERS HAVING A WALL PORTION ENGAGING OVER THE ENDS OF SAID TUBULAR MEMBER AND FORMING ENDS FOR SAID SLOTS SPACED FROM THE ENDS OF SAID TUBULAR MEMBER,
