cifically, this invention relates to a dispensing carton for retaining a roll of waxed paper or other type of frangible sheet material from which suitable lengths of the sheet material may be drawn from the carton, the carton being formed from a single integral blank and provided with a roll front cutting edge of novel construction formed from the blank itself for cutting desired lengths of the sheet material.
In general, the principal requirements for packages or dispensing cartons for roll sheet material in which the material can be shipped and sold and which retains the sheet material in a manner convenient for use of the ultimate consumer, are that the container be inexpensive to manufacture and be effectively and simply operated by the ultimate consumer; that the container form a complete enclosure for the roll of sheet material to keep out dust and foreign particles; and that it provides means for enabling suitable lengths of the paper to be cleanly and readily torn from the enclosed roll. Desirable refinements for such dispensing containers are that means be provided for applying a braking force to the roll of sheet material to prevent more paper than is required from being pulled off the roll when a strip is to be torn off; that the edgesof the paper shall always be accessible to the grasp of the operator when a length of paper is drawn "out to be torn ofi; and that the cutting surface or edge upon which the exposed length of sheet material is to be torn is of a suitably hard or rigid character to permit the paper to be cleanly and effectively sheared and which has no sharp or abrupt edges or projections which might injure the hands of the operator.
Heretofore, it has been the common practice in this art to providedispensing cartons of this general type with metal cutting blades affixed to ,a free wall portion of the carton, as for example the front flap on the lid or closure of the container, to provide a cutting edge for cutting lengths of the sheet material from the roll contained in the carton. The manufacture of such cartons providediwith metal cutting, blades entails considerable expense not only because of the cost of the material involved but also on 'a p n t e ma a. q r i ns e r dn 'mariufaoture of the cartonin suitably afiixing the metal cutting blade to the carton. Furthermore, the use of metal cutting blades was a source of possible injury to the user of the carton, particularly where such blades, as was the common practice, were of the saw tooth or sharpened edge variety. Such cartons also were not readily disposable when empty because of the rigidity of the metal strip.v
An object of the present invention, therefore, is the provision of a novel dispensing container for roll sheet materials, which is a simple and efiicient container for the purposes described and which will be inexpensive to produce, convenient and efficient in operation, and which may be stored in knocked-down condition.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a novel dispensing container for roll "smooth roll front cutting edge is provided to enable lengths of the material to be cleanly torn from the enclosed roll, the cutting edge being of a character which will efiectively avoid injury to the hands of the user on operation of the dispensing container. Other objects, advantages and capabilities of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, showing only the preferred embodiment of the invention, in which:
Figure l is a plan view of the cut, grooved and scored cardboard blank from which a dispensing container for roll sheet material embodying the present invention is to be assembled;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the assembled roll sheet material dispensing carton, with parts of the incident sides thereof broken away to more clearly show the construction of the interior of the container;
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section of the roll sheet material dispensing container, taken along the lines 33 of Figure 2, and wherein the roll of sheet material is shown in the container with a length being drawn therefrom; and
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the dispensing container illustrated in Figure 2, viewed from the left-hand end of Figure 2.
Generally speaking, the present invention contemplates the provision of a dispensing container for rolls of sheet material such as wax paper and the like, constructed of a normally flat blank of cardboard material ,or the like, folded and secured into a form to provide an open box-like container for the paper roll and a hinged cover. The hinged cover is provided with a front flap or fold having an infold formed of an extension of the flap adhered to the inner "surface of the front fold of the cover, and wherein the reenforced roll front edge formed by the front fold and infold is coated with a metallic compound trimming over a narrow strip along the cutting edge and adjacent faces so as to provide a hard smooth cutting edge. Likewise, a resilient hinge portion or strip is formed adjacent the juncture of the hinged cover and the open top box immediately below the hinge line, which is normally stressed when the box is closed so as to resiliently urge the lower edge of the front cover fold forming the cutting edge rearwardly against the front side wall of the box and against the sheet of roll sheet material to resiliently tend to lift the hinged cover through a small vertical angle relative to the open top box. The function of this hinge is to exert through the surface of the front cover fold and infold a braking action on the lengths of roll sheet material to prevent more sheet material than is required from being drawn from the open top box during tearing of suitable lengths of the sheet material, and
to tend to lift the hinged cover sufiiciently to expose the end of the roll sheet material so that the roll sheet material will be alway available to the grasp of the user.
The present invention will be more fully unclerstood from the following detailed description of the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the sever-al figures. The dispensing container for the roll sheet material is constructed from a flat cardboard blank, illustrated generally at ill in Figure 1. The blank I is cut, grooved and scored to form a cover generally indicated at H and an open top box generally indicated at E2.
The open top box portion I2 is cut to form a front side wall I3, a bottom panel 14 and a rear side wall l5, each separated by grooved and scored lines [6 and I1, respectively. The lateral ends of the front and rear side walls 13 and 15 are provided with end flaps l8, l8 and I 9, l9, respectively, each provided with grooved lines 29 separating the end flaps from their respective ends of the front and rear side walls I3 and IS. The bottom panel M is provided with end walls 2!, 2! separated from the bottom M by suitable grooved lines 22.
The open top box portion I2 is assembled from these portions of the blank l0 by bending the front and rear side walls i 3 and I5 into an erect mutually parallel relation at right angles to the bottom (4. An upwardly opening rectangular box is thus formed, suitable for retaining the roll of sheet material indicated at A, completely enclosed therein.
The hinged cover II is formed of the same cardboard blank Hi from which the open top box 12 is formed and comprises a top panel 25 separated from the rear side wall 65 of the open top box portion of the blank by a grooved and scored line 26 to permit free pivotal movement of the top panel 25 about the scored line 26. A front fol-d or panel 2'! is likewise provided, having a grooved and scored line 28 separating the front fold 27 from the top cover panel 25 and is provided with an extended portion 01' infold strip 29 adapted to be folded inwardly and dispose in overlying relation with the inner surface of the front cover fold 21, providing a smooth reenforced roll front edge 30 at the juncture of the infold and front cover fold portions 21 and 29. The lateral edges of the front fold or panel 21 edge are provided with end tabs 3|, 3| separated therefrom by grooved lines 32 and adapted to underlie and be adhered to the inner surface of cover end flaps 33, 33' joined to the top cover panel 25 along grooved lines 33.
By this assembly, a container is provided having an open top box portion l2 adapted toreceive and retain an article such as a roll of sheet material A, wherein the box is covered .by an integral hinged cover member havingfront and side panels or flaps extending downover the edges of the open top of the box' I21 The front side wall panel I3 is of a height somewhat less than that of the infolds 2|, 2| so as to provide, ineffect, a slot of finite width extending the length of the opening of the open top box 12 and disposed forwardly, thereof relative the hinged cover ll, through which the sheet material, indicated at a is drawn from the roll A between the juxtaposed faces of the front cover infold 29 and the upper portion of the front side wall I 3 of the box I 2 on withdrawal of lengths of the roll sheet material from the container.
The withdrawn sheet a of the roll A of the sheet material maybe torn off at desired'lengths along the cutting edge'Sll formed at the lower edge of the front cover fold 21. This roll front cutting edge is merely formed by the folding'back of a portion of the cardboard blank in the .formation of the'infold flap 29, and provides a smooth sufficiently rigid-edge to permit effective tearing ofthe paper by shearing action, whereinno metallic or other hard material i enplayed in the edge, and no sharp jagged edges exist by which-the hands of the user might be injured.- A metallic coating or trimming compound, indicated at 35, such as for example, commercially available aluminum metallic paints or other metallic suspension coatings, synthetic resin-s, lacquers and the like, may be disposed in a strip along the cutting edge and the inner and outer faces of the cover immediately adjacent the cutting edge to increase the effectiveness of the cutting edge portion, without necessitating any metallic strip or the like being adhered or clamped to the cardboard blank. In this manner, the entire dispenser carton is constructed of one integral blank of cardboard, wherein the advantages obtaining in prior art dispenser cartons employing metallic cutting edge strips mounted on the cardboard of which the carton is constructed are available in this dispenser.
A resilient, hinge strip, occurring in the area adjacent the grooved and scored line 26 between cover panel 25 and rear side wall l5, occurring in the area enclosed within the dotted lines indicated at 36, is provided to resiliently urge the cutting edge 30 of the cover II in a rearward direction against the outwardly disposed face of the front side wall 13 when the cover is in completely closed relation with the open top box I2 and to exert a resilient force upon the cover ll tending to tilt it through a small angle upwardly relative to the top of the open top box l2 when manual pressure is removed from the cover H. This hinge portion, indicated at 36, is likewise formed of the integral cardboard blank l0, and consists simply in a free strip or portion of the rear side wall l5 immediately adjacent the grooved and scored line 26 which is free to be flexed in a direction of the front side wall l3. This strip is provided by spacing the upper edge of the rear side wall end flaps l9, 19', that is, the edge of these flaps disposed toward the cover portion 1 I of the blank H), a finite distance below the scored line 26 so that the upper edge of the flap lies substantially in the same horizontal plane as the upper edge of the front side wall l3, thus providing free lateral edges 31, 31' for the strip 36 to permit them to be flexed freely.
The top cover panel 25 is of such a width relative to the width of the bottom panel IA of the open top box l2 that the distance between the inwardly disposed surface of the front cover infold 29 and the scored line 26 corresponding to the rear edge of the top cover panel 25 is somewhat less than the width of the open top box It. When the cover ll is in closed condition relative to the open top box [2, the strip 36 will therefore be flexed or drawn inwardly toward the front side wall l3. Because of the inherent resilience of the cardboard material from which the container is constructed, the tendency of the hinge portion 36 of the rear side wall l5 to reassume its normal position in the plane of the rear side wall IE will tend to draw the forwardly disposed portion of the cover I l upwardly from its completely closed condition. This will rotate the cover upwardly through approximately ten to thirty degrees above its normal horizontal condition when completely closed, exposing the lower edge of the sheet a of the roll A of sheet material to the grasp of the user of the dispenser carton after a length of the sheet material a has been torn off. Also, when the cover H is manually held in completely closed condition relative to the open top box l2, this resilient force caused by the strip 36, will tend to draw the downwardly disposed end of the front cover fold 21 carrying the cutting edge 30 in a. downward and rearward direction, exerting a resilient braking action against the surface of the sheet a of roll sheet material in the direction of the outwardly disposed surface of the front side wall l3 toretard the tendency for more paper than is required to be drawn out of the container as a length of the paper is being torn off against the'cutting edge 30.
It will be readily apparent from the above description that a novel dispensingcarton for roll sheet material has been provided,' wherein by the resilient hinge structure provided for the cover portion ll, resilient forces are exerted against the cover when held in completely closed condition relative to the open top box containingthe roll sheet material to exert a braking action against a sheet of the material being withdrawn to prevent more of the sheet material than is required from being withdrawn from the carton as a length of the material is being torn off, and which forces tilt the cover of the container upwardly after a piece of the material is torn off and manual pressure is withdrawn therefrom to expose an edge of the sheet material to the grasp of the operator. Likewise, by the instant construction, a dispensing container for roll sheet material is provided from a single integral blank of cardboard which may be normally stored in flat condition and in which the advantages incident to the use of strips of metal or like material for the container are afforded without requiring strips of the additional material being adhered to the cardboard blank.
While but one particular embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it is distinctly understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and it is desired, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art and are set forth in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A dispensing carton for rolls of sheet material, comprising an integral cardboard blank folded to form an upwardly opening box having a rectangular bottom and front, rear and end walls disposed at right angles to said bottom, and a cover portion hingedly connected to the rear wall of said box along an integral fold line, said cover having a rectangular top, end walls and a front fold having an infolded flap, said front fold and end walls being disposed at right angles to said top, flaps at the ends of the front folds adhered to the inner face of said cover end walls, the cover portion being adapted to close over the upwardly opening box with the front fold of the cover overlying and spaced slightly from the front wall of the box forming a passageway for withdrawal of a web from a roll of sheet material disposed within the box, said end walls of said box terminating below and in spaced relation to said integral fold line producing a resiliently deformable portion of said rear wall contiguous with said integral fold line between said cover and said rear wall, and the width of said rectangular top of said cover portion from front to back being the same as that of said rectangular bottom of said box such that said deformable portion is deformed toward the front wall of said box by interengagement of said front fold and front wall and placed under tension on closure of said cover to yieldably urge said front fold '7 8 'rearwardly against the front wall of said boxand UNITED STATES PATENTS against the web of sheet material drawn through Number a a said passageway for exerting a braking force on 19,134 Powell Apt 10 1934 the web and said 'tensioned deformable portion 1,887,912 Begle 1932 exerting an upwardly tilting force on said cover 5 1,907,922 Willis 1933 portion relative to said box on release of said 2,405,459 Smith 6, 1946 cover.
