Cl. 206-58) This invention relates generally to dispensers and more particularly. to an improved box for dispensing rolled sheet material. 1

' Conventionally, Wax paper, aluminum foil and the like isdispensed from an elongated rectangular box having a discharge slot which extends from one end of the box to the other. I A'small opening is provided at the middle of the box along the slot to provide access to the leading edge of the roll of material so that the material may be pulled from the box. A metallic cut-oif strip is usually provided so that when a desired amount of material has been pulled out, it can be conveniently severed from the material remaining in the roll.

Present boxes adequately provide for discharging material and cutting off the reeled out portion. However, no provision is made to compensate for the common If a housewife pulls out an excess amount of material, she has no way to retract the excess short of opening the box, removing the roll and then re-rolling the excess. Such procedure is annoying and time consuming. As a result, rather than go to the bother of re-rolling material, the housewife will waste the excess.

One object of this invention is to provide an improved dispensing box for rolled sheet material, the box having means whereby excess material drawn from the box but not cut-off may be drawn back into the box and rewound on the roll without having to open the box.

Another object of this invention is to provide a dispensing box which provides for rewinding excess material which has been reeled out, by means which does not increase the cost of the box or involve additions to the blank from which the box is formed.

A further object of this invention is to provide a box of the character described wherein rewinding requires only the use of the forefinger and thumb of one hand.

Other objects of this invention will be apparent hereinafter from the disclosure and from the recital in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawing by numerals of reference, denotes generally a box having a roll 11 of sheet material. The axis of the roll is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the box. Box 10 has a top wall 12, bottom wall 14, and

Side wall 16 forms a closure flap and the lower edge of which is spaced from bottom wall 14 to define a longitudinal slot 19'extending from one end of the box to the other and through which material 20 may be withdrawn from the box and 7 roll 11. It is connected thereto by a releaseable adhesive or other means for subsequent detachment when the boxed material is to be used. Then tab 24 is inserted in the slot 19 through which material 20 is extracted.

I The box thus far described is conventionah The improvement resides in providing a tear-out piece 30 having a portion 31 in end wall 18 and a portion 32 in side wall 15. The box blank 34 (FIG. 4) is perforated along line 35. When the boxed material is sold, piece 30 is in place and adapted. to be removed when the boxed sheet material is to be used.

Wehn removed, piece 30 produces an opening 36 in end wall 18 and an opening 38 in side wall 15. Tabs 12' and 14' on the ends of top and bottom of the box along end wall 18 are cut-Out at 33 to register with opening 36 and provide free access into the box. Opening 36 extends from the corner 39 formed by end Wall 18 and side wall 15 to a point somewhat past the open core of roll 11. Opening 36 is wide enough in a vertical direction to provide easy access to the core portion 40 of roll 11 adjacent end wall 18. The opening 38 extends along side wall 15 from corner 39. It is long enough and wide to provide thumb room and access to the periphery of roll 11.

36 and 38 are so located and related to each other that re-rolling of material is readily accomplished. If too much material has been pulled from the box it can be drawn back into the box using the hand H, as shown in FIG. 5. The forefinger 41 is passed through opening 36 and into the core 40 of roll 11. The thumb is passed through opening 38 for engagement with the periphery of the roll. By pinching the roll between the thumb and forefinger and manipulating the thumb, roll 11 can be easily rotated. When turned in one direction, material is passed out of the box through slot 19. If rotated in the opposite direction, material is drawn back into the box and rewound onto roll 11.

The provision of tear-out piece 30 does not increase the cost of box 10. The only expense is to modify the blanking die so that perforated line 35 is formed when each box blank is made.

36 and 38 are shown to form a continuous opening, with each portion communicating with the other, two separated openings could be employed if the cardboard or other material from which the box is made is light and requires an unbroken box corner 39. Further, while this invention has been described in connection with a particular embodiment thereof it will be understood that it is capable of modification and this ap plication is intended to cover any variations, uses or adaptations following, in general, the principles of the invention and including such departures from the present disclosure as come within known or customary practice in the art to which the invention pertains and as fall within the scope of the invention or the limits of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A dispenser for sheet material in a roll such as wax paper, aluminum foil and the like where the roll has a hollow core portion at one end and is substantially longer axially than diametrically, comprising an elongated box in which the roll is positionable with the axis of the roll parallel to the longitudinal axis of the box and the box having a longitudinally extending outlet at least as long as the length of the roll to permit material withdrawal, said box having a body portion and a pair of end walls, one of said end walls at said one end of the roll having a first tear out which when removed forms an opening sufiicient in length in a radial direction to provide finger access to said roll core, and said body portion having a second tear out which when removed forms an opening separate from said outlet and substantially adjacent to said one end wall opening, said tear out opening in said body portion providing access to the periphery of the material in the roll and having a length in an axial direction relative to the roll less than the roll length, said tear out Openings being so located relative to each other that when said first tear out is removed a person may extend a forefinger through said end wall and into the roll core and when the second tear out is removedthe thumb of the same hand may be extended through the body portion whereby the roll may be pinched between its core and periphery and manually rotated about its axis in one direction to dispense material and in an opposite direction to retract any excess.

Claims

1. A DISPENSER FOR SHEET MATERIAL IN A ROLL SUCH AS WAX PAPER, ALUMINUM FOIL AND THE LIKE WHERE THE ROLL HAS A HOLLOW CORE PORTION AT ONE END AND IS SUBSTANTIALLY LONGER AXIALLY THAN DIAMETRICALLY, COMPRISING AN ELONGATED BOX IN WHICH THE ROLL IS POSITIONABLE WITH THE AXIS OF THE ROLL PARALLEL TO THE LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF THE BOX AND THE BOX HAVING A LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING OUTLET AT LEAST AS LONG AS THE LENGTH OF THE ROLL TO PERMIT MATERIAL WITHDRAWAL, SAID BOX HAVING A BODY PORTION AND A PAIR OF END WALLS, ONE OF SAID END WALLS AT SAID ONE END OF THE ROLL HAVING A FIRST TEAR OUT WHICH WHEN REMOVED FORMS AN OPENING SUFFICIENT IN LENGTH IN A RADIAL DIRECTION TO PROVIDE FINGER ACCESS TO SAID ROLL CORE, AND SAID BODY PORTION HAVING A SECOND TEAR OUT WHICH WHEN REMOVED FORMS AN OPENING SEPARATE FROM SAID OUTLET AND SUBSTANTIALLY ADJACENT TO SAID ONE END WALL OPENING, SAID TEAR OUT OPENING IN SAID BODY PORTION PROVIDING ACCESS TO THE PERIPHERY OF THE MATERIAL IN THE ROLL AND HAVING A LENGTH IN AN AXIAL DIRECTION RELATIVE TO THE ROLL LESS THAN THE ROLL LENGTH, SAID TEAR OUT OPENINGS BEING SO LOCATED RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER THAT WHEN SAID FIRST TEAR OUT IS REMOVED A PERSON MAY EXTEND A FOREFINGER THROUGH SAID END WALL AND INTO THE CORE AND WHEN THE SECOND TEAR OUT IS REMOVED THE THUMB OF THE SAME HAND MAY BE EXTENDED THROUGH THE BODY PORTION WHEREBY THE ROLL MAY BE PINCHED BETWEEN ITS CORE AND PERIPHERY AND MANUALLY ROTATED ABOUT ITS AXIS IN ONE DIRECTION TO DISPENSE MATERIAL AND IN AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO RETRACT ANY EXCESS.
