1 citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improve ment in Ribbon-Packages, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to packages containing ribbons or analagous reeled merchandise in condition for sale: in short lengths as required by the retail trade, and

the object of the invention is to Vprovide a package in which the reel or roll of ribbon is mounted and protected against damage by soiling, with anv exposed end or area attractively presented for inspection.

Another important object 1s to provide means whereby the roll is completely 1nclosed in a container and the required shortl length of ribbon may be easily and quickly drawn from the roll and any surplus be easily rewound without directly handling the roll, thus preserving the freshness of the reeled portion and protecting it from fading through exposure to the light.

The inventionconsists in certain novel features and details of arrangement and construction by which the above yobjects are attain-ed, to be hereinafter described and claimed. l i

The accompanying vdrawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice. Figure l is a perspective, view of the improved package. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, certain portions being broken away to show l theparts within,l and partly invertical section. The container is a flat rectangular box of heavy paper, preferably of the folding or knock-down. type, having an internal width somewhat in excess of the width of ribbon to be inclosed, and its other dimensions greater than the diameter of the roll or coil in which the ribbon iswound, one edge or top face having slots corresponding to the width of the ribbon, thrcngh which the en d of such ribbon is threaded with a portion exposed for inspection and a loose end conveniently presented for drawing from the contained roll any'desired length. The traverse of the ribbon through the slots offers sufficient tension to hold the end in position, and the location of the slots insures correct rewinding of the surplus.

A A are the sides ofthe box or container, and B B the ends provided with the usual stilening flaps C C bent inwardly between the sides and held by folding over the top D and bot-tom E and tucking in the flaps F and G thereon in the usual manner to maintain the rectangular form. The top D is provided with three narrow transverse slots CZ, Z1 and d2 having a length equaling the width of the ribbon' to be inclosed.

The ribbon M is wound von a stiff annular core H of fiber-board or heav'y'pasteboard, of the same width as the ribbon and having an internal diameter to matchloosely upon a cylindrical block J, preferably of wood, .wider than the ribbon and its core and of the same width as the interior of the container. The ends of the.l block project on each Vface beyond such core when the latter and its roll are mounted thereon.

K K are annular disks each having an opening 7c matching to the block J and adapted to apply'one on each face of the roll of ribbon, and of such diameter as to match to and be received easily withinthe container. The thickness of the disks K K corresponds to the projecting ends/,of the block'J *so that when thus assembled and inserted within the container the disks and block, with the inclosed corev and roll of ribbon practically till the container. The parts are secured therein by suitable fastening means, preferably the wire staples L L,

The free end of the ribbon M leaves the roll atv the slot d and is passed therethrough to the upper. face of thev top D, hence downwardly throughl the slot d1 to the under face of the Itop, and again upwardly through the slot d2; the top is then folded down and its flap F inserted between the outer face of one of the disks K and the `inner face of the adjacent side A of the container, with a portion of the ribbon exposed between the slots d and Z1 and the free end hanging loosely from the slot d2 but held by the tension afforded by the tortuous path followed by the ribbon through the slots. the latter with its core H revolving on the relatively fixed block J as a center. The disks K K develop sufficient friction against the sides A A of the container to resist the tendency to revolve with the roll, and usually remain stationary while. the roll is thus `unwound, but may rotate therewith.

The sides A are provided with oppositely located curved slots or long apertures a a through which the tips of the finger and thumb may be inserted and the disks K K, which close the apertures, be grasped between them with sufficient pressure upon the inclosed roll to cause the latter to rotate with the disks as they are thus moved in the reverse direction by the ngers and rewind any protruding length or surplus previously unwound inmaking a sale.

The length of the slots d, Z1 and i2 should be the same as, or but little greater than, the width of the contained ribbon, and their location should match as closely as practicable to the space between the disks K K to insurea correct return to thefroll and avoid wrinkling or t other damage in rewinding. One size of container will serve with several widths of ribbon, by employing, blocks of uniform width matching such container and applying disks of various widths or thicknesses to fill the spaces between the, ribbon roll and side walls A A of the container.

The package protects the roll from the fading action of light and damage by handling and also avoids the necessity for the protective strip of paper usually wound, The disks K K prevent the entrance oflight or dust through the apertures a a, and permit the roll to be rewound without direct contact of the finger tips with the ribbon. The tension provided by the traverse through the slots d, d1, d2, holds the free end reliably and presents the short length or area of ribbon between the slots d and d1 smoothly and attractively for inspection, and with the friction ofthe disks against the close fitting walls of the container, holdsthe roll against .accidental unwinding.-

1. In a ribbon package a container, a cylindrical block secured therein, disks rotatably mounted on said block, a roll rotatably mounted on said block between said disks and having a free end of ribbon presented on the exterior of such container.

2. In a ribbon package, a container having sides and top, disks rotatably mounted in said container, and a roll rotatably mounted betwen said disks, said top having transverse slots through which the free end of ribbon from said roll is traversed to present an area for inspection and to hold suchend.

3. In a ribbon' package, a container having sides and top the latter provided with a slot, a cylindrical block in said container extending from side to side thereof and secured to said sides, r'oll of ribbon rotatably mounted on said block and of less width than the latter, disks rotatably mounted on said block on each side of said roll and lling the spaces between said roll and the adjacent sides, said roll having a free end of ribbon extending through such slot in the top to the exterior of such container.

4. In a ribbon package, a container having sides and top, disks rotatably mounted in said container, and a roll rotatably mounted between said disks, said top having transverse slots through which the free end of ribbon from such roll is traversed to present an area for inspection and to hold such end, said sides having apertures closed by said disks and permitting the latter to be grasped for rewinding said roll.

In ,a ribbon package, a container having sides and top the latter provided with a slot, a cylindrical block in said container extending from side to side thereof and secured yto said sides, a roll of ribbon rotatably mounted on said block and of less width than the latter, disks rotatably mounted on said block, one on each side of said roll and filling the spaces between said roll and the adjacent sides, said roll having a free end extending through said slot in the top to the exterior of said container, and said sides having apertures closed by said disks and permitting said disks with said roll to be grasped for rewinding. j

6.In a ribbon package, a container having sides and top, a cylindrical block in said container extending from side to side thereof and secured to said sides, a roll of ribbon rotatably mounted on said block and of less Width than the latter, disks rotatably mounted on s id block, one on each side of said. roll and filling the spaces between said roll and the adjacent sides, said top having three transverse slots therein having a length corresponding to the width of said roll and located immediately above said roll, said roll having a free end extending through said slots to present an area for inspection and to hold such free end.

7. In aribbon package, a container having sides and top, a cylindrical block in said container extending from side to side thereof and secured to said sides. a roll of ribbon rotatably mounted on said block and ofl less Width than the latter, disks rotatably mounted' on said block, one on each side of said roll and filling the spaces bet-Ween said roll andthe adjacent sides, said top having three transverse slots therein having a length corresponding to the width of said roll and located immediately above said roll, said roll having a free end extending through said slots to present an area for inspection on said top, and said sides having apertures closed by said disks and permitting said disks With said roll to be grasped for rewinding. i
